When Modernism Was Still Radical: The Design Laboratory and the Cultural Politics of Depression-Era America

"This article examines the history of the Design Laboratory, which was founded in 1935 by the Federal Art Project as the first comprehensive school of modernist design in the United States. The Laboratory embodied the vital connections that existed between modernist design and radical political and social activism in the United States during the 1930s, providing a vibrant point of contact between the business culture of America’s industrial design entrepreneurs, the artistic experimentation of the Depression-Era avant-garde, an unprecedented public art bureaucracy, and militant labor unionism and consumer activism. Following cuts in government funding in 1937, the school continued operation as a cooperative sponsored by a radical white-collar union before financial difficulties forced it to close in 1940.

This study explored the public reactions of society to a post on TikTok created by Nessa May. In this video, Nessa May confidently shows her body, which does not fit the stereotypical beauty standards of society. She explains to viewers that it is okay not to fit beauty standards and to have a body type similar to her own. A content analysis of the 100 most recent comments reacting to Nessa May’s video identified five main themes including: love, thankfulness, emotions (happiness), beauty, and insecurities. The predominant theme seen was that of love towards Nessa May herself, as well as self-love and increased confidence in the commenters themselves (this made up 35% of all comments). Overall findings showed both support for the body-positive post, as well as an emphasis on the effect normative beauty standards have on women

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

    Get PDF
The Annie E. Casey Foundation has developed this practice guide to support Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI) sites in meeting their obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth involved in the juvenile justice system. The guide covers a wide range of policies and practices -- from broad organizational measures such as staff training and nondiscrimination policies, to specific practices such as talking with youth about sexual orientation and gender identity and making individualized classification and housing decisions. This guidance is critical because LGBT youth are at heightened risk of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, particularly in secure settings. In addition, LGBT youth represent up to 20 percent of detained youth -- a far greater percentage than their share of the general population. Although the guide is chiefly aimed at promoting the health and well-being of LGBT youth, its recommendations will benefit all justice-involved youth by exposing and challenging bias, promoting mutual respect and increasing professionalism

In the wake of major technological advancement, social media has increasingly become a communal space of daily congregation, particularly for Black people. This paper specifically explores how the Black Diaspora navigates these spaces at a complex intersection of social media and transnational Black histories. I draw from critical Internet studies, Black Diaspora studies, Black feminisms, and media studies to investigate how new technology allows Black folk to engage in conversations about our identity, community, and resistance. Employing a critical ethnographic approach, this paper analyzes online discourse within the Black community about Marvel\u27s Black Panther (2018). This analysis emphasizes the parallels between maroon communities and digital Black spaces, as they both serve as a transnational and multi-ethnic communities that challenge oppressive systems
