Improving the Transferability of Adversarial Examples with Arbitrary Style Transfer
Deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples crafted by
applying human-imperceptible perturbations on clean inputs. Although many
attack methods can achieve high success rates in the white-box setting, they
also exhibit weak transferability in the black-box setting. Recently, various
methods have been proposed to improve adversarial transferability, in which the
input transformation is one of the most effective methods. In this work, we
notice that existing input transformation-based works mainly adopt the
transformed data in the same domain for augmentation. Inspired by domain
generalization, we aim to further improve the transferability using the data
augmented from different domains. Specifically, a style transfer network can
alter the distribution of low-level visual features in an image while
preserving semantic content for humans. Hence, we propose a novel attack method
named Style Transfer Method (STM) that utilizes a proposed arbitrary style
transfer network to transform the images into different domains. To avoid
inconsistent semantic information of stylized images for the classification
network, we fine-tune the style transfer network and mix up the generated
images added by random noise with the original images to maintain semantic
consistency and boost input diversity. Extensive experimental results on the
ImageNet-compatible dataset show that our proposed method can significantly
improve the adversarial transferability on either normally trained models or
adversarially trained models than state-of-the-art input transformation-based
attacks. Code is available at: https://github.com/Zhijin-Ge/STM.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted by the 31st ACM International

Stepwise Increases in Left Ventricular Mass Index and Decreases in Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Correspond with the Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease in Diabetes Patients
Aims. Patients with diabetic nephropathy are reported to have a high prevalence of left
ventricular structural and functional abnormalities. This study was designed to assess
the determinants of left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and left ventricular ejection
fraction (LVEF) in diabetic patients at various stages of chronic kidney disease
(CKD).
Methods. This cross-sectional study enrolled 285 diabetic patients with CKD stages 3
to 5 from our outpatient department of internal medicine. Clinical and
echocardiographic parameters were compared and analyzed.
Results. We found a significant stepwise increase in LVMI (P < 0.001), LVH (P < 0.001), and LVEF <55% (P = 0.013) and a stepwise decrease in LVEF (P = 0.038)
corresponding to advance in CKD stages.
Conclusions. Our findings suggest that increases in LVMI and decreases in LVEF coincide
with advances in CKD stages in patients with diabetes
Encephalitozoon hellem infection after haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in children: a case report
BackgroundEncephalitozoon hellem (E. hellem) infection is a zoonotic disease, rarely observed in individuals, causing various clinical manifestations including diarrhea, keratoconjunctivitis, cystitis, etc. E. hellem infection after hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is a rare, serious complication.Case presentationHerein, we present a case of E. hellem infection developing during HLA-haploidentical HSCT in a 9-year-old boy who suffered from aplastic anemia. On 15 days after HSCT, the patient developed recurrent and prolonged fever, diarrhea and hematuria. It is challenging to differentiate whether the symptoms mentioned in this case are caused by graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) or a specific infection. Based on the result of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and clinical observation, the patient was diagnosed as E. hellem infection, and received albendazole and decreased the immunosuppressive treatment. Finally, he had recovered.ConclusionWe should pay attention to the uncommon disease caused by the E. hellem infection after HSCT, especially in cases with immune reconstitution unrecovered. Among those rare infection, mNGS can be performed for better understanding the source of infection and targeted therapy, which can benefit the patients
Association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T polymorphism and serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphism and serum lipid profiles is still controversial in diverse ethnics. Bai Ku Yao is an isolated subgroup of the Yao minority in China. The aim of the present study was to eveluate the association of MTHFR C677T polymorphism and several environmental factors with serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 780 subjects of Bai Ku Yao and 686 participants of Han Chinese were randomly selected from our previous stratified randomized cluster samples. Genotyping of the MTHFR C677T was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein (Apo) AI and ApoB were lower in Bai Ku Yao than in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001). The frequency of C and T alleles was 77.4% and 22.6% in Bai Ku Yao, and 60.9% and 39.1% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. The frequency of CC, CT and TT genotypes was 58.7%, 37.3% and 4.0% in Bai Ku Yao, and 32.6%, 56.4% and 11.0% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. The levels of TC and LDL-C in both ethnic groups were significant differences among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.01). The T allele carriers had higher serum TC and LDL-C levels than the T allele noncarriers. The levels of ApoB in Han were significant differences among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05). The T allele carriers had higher serum ApoB levels as compared with the T allele noncarriers. The levels of TC, TG and LDL-C in Bai Ku Yao were correlated with genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001), whereas the levels of LDL-C in Han were associated with genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Serum lipid parameters were also correlated with sex, age, body mass index, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and blood pressure in the both ethnic groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The differences in serum TC, TG, LDL-C and ApoB levels between the two ethnic groups might partly result from different genotypic and allelic frequencies of the MTHFR C677T or different MTHFR gene-enviromental interactions.</p
Electrostatic spraying of membrane electrode for proton exchange membrane fuel cell
Abstract(#br)In order to improve the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the optimization of electrostatic spraying of membrane electrode was conducted. The influence of the spraying voltage on morphology, elemental composition of catalyst layer, and performance of the PEMFC were investigated. The results show that increasing spraying voltage could reduce agglomeration of the carbon-supported platinum particles, leading to more uniform pore distribution. High voltage did not accelerate oxidation of platinum catalyst. A high electrochemical active surface area of 26.18 m 2 /g pt was obtained when the platinum-carbon catalyst layer was deposited in cone jet mode. With further increasing spraying voltage, the total ohmic resistance and catalytic activity were changed slightly, whereas the charge transfer resistance was increased. Using the optimized electrostatic spraying parameters (injection rate = 100 μL min −1 , spraying voltage = 8.5 kV, and working distance = 12 mm), a peak power density of 1.408 W cm −2 was obtained with an output voltage of 0.451 V
Lysosomal Proteases Are a Determinant of Coronavirus Tropism
Cell entry by coronaviruses involves two principal steps, receptor binding and membrane fusion; the latter requires activation by host proteases, particularly lysosomal proteases. Despite the importance of lysosomal proteases in both coronavirus entry and cell metabolism, the correlation between lysosomal proteases and cell tropism of coronaviruses has not been established. Here, we examined the roles of lysosomal proteases in activating coronavirus surface spike proteins for membrane fusion, using the spike proteins from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) as the model system. To this end, we controlled the contributions from receptor binding and other host proteases, thereby attributing coronavirus entry solely or mainly to the efficiency of lysosomal proteases in activating coronavirus spike-mediated membrane fusion. Our results showed that lysosomal proteases from bat cells support coronavirus spike-mediated pseudovirus entry and cell-cell fusion more effectively than their counterparts from human cells. Moreover, purified lysosomal extracts from bat cells cleave cell surface-expressed coronavirus spikes more efficiently than their counterparts from human cells. Overall, our study suggests that different lysosomal protease activities from different host species and tissue cells are an important determinant of the species and tissue tropism of coronaviruses.IMPORTANCE Coronaviruses are capable of colonizing new species, as evidenced by the recent emergence of SARS and MERS coronaviruses; they can also infect multiple tissues in the same species. Lysosomal proteases play critical roles in coronavirus entry by cleaving coronavirus surface spike proteins and activating the fusion of host and viral membranes; they also play critical roles in cell physiology by processing cellular products. How do different lysosomal protease activities from different cells impact coronavirus entry? Here, we controlled the contributions from known factors that function in coronavirus entry so that lysosomal protease activities became the only or the main determinant of coronavirus entry. Using pseudovirus entry, cell-cell fusion, and biochemical assays, we showed that lysosomal proteases from bat cells activate coronavirus spike-mediated membrane fusion more efficiently than their counterparts from human cells. Our study provides the first direct evidence supporting lysosomal proteases as a determinant of the species and tissue tropisms of coronaviruses
Joint population pharmacokinetic modeling of venlafaxine and O-desmethyl venlafaxine in healthy volunteers and patients to evaluate the impact of morbidity and concomitant medication
Introduction: Venlafaxine (VEN) is a widely used dual selective serotonin/noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor indicated for depression and anxiety. It undergoes first-pass metabolism to its active metabolite, O-desmethyl venlafaxine (ODV). The aim of the present study was to develop a joint population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model to characterize their pharmacokinetic characters simultaneously. Methods: Plasma concentrations with demographic and clinical data were derived from a bioequivalence study in 24 healthy subjects and a naturalistic TDM setting containing 127 psychiatric patients. A parent-metabolite PPK modeling was performed with NONMEM software using a non-linear mixed effect modeling approach. Goodness of fit plots and normalized prediction distribution error method were used for model validation. Results and conclusion: Concentrations of VEN and ODV were well described with a one-compartment model incorporating first-pass metabolism. The first-pass metabolism was modeled as a first-order conversion. The morbid state and concomitant amisulpride were identified as two significant covariates affecting the clearance of VEN and ODV, which may account for some of the variations in exposure. This model may contribute to the precision medication in clinical practice and may inspire other drugs with pre-system metabolism
Low-threshold epitaxially grown 1.3 μm InAs quantum dot lasers on patterned (001) Si
A three-fold reduction of threshold current, with a minimum threshold current density of 286 A/cm 2 , a maximum operating temperature of 80 °C, and a maximum 3 dB bandwidth of 5.8 GHz was achieved for 1.3 μm InAs quantum dot lasers on patterned, on-axis (001) Si. This was enabled by the reduced threading dislocation density (from 7×10 7 to 3×10 6 cm −2 ), and optimized probe design. The patterned Si produced antiphase domain free material in the coalesced GaAs buffer layer with reduced misfit/threading dislocation nucleation, without the use of Ge/GaP buffers or substrate miscut. Utilizing aspect ratio trapping, cyclic thermal annealing, and dislocation filter layers, high quality III-V on Si devices were grown, demonstrating the compelling advantages of this patterned Si template for a monolithic Si photonics integration platform
