Representation of a complex Green function on a real basis: I. General Theory

When the Hamiltonian of a system is represented by a finite matrix, constructed from a discrete basis, the matrix representation of the resolvent covers only one branch. We show how all branches can be specified by the phase of a complex unit of time. This permits the Hamiltonian matrix to be constructed on a real basis; the only duty of the basis is to span the dynamical region of space, without regard for the particular asymptotic boundary conditions that pertain to the problem of interest.Comment: about 40 pages with 5 eps-figure

    School Climate Development Survey

Over the last twenty-five years the Consortium on Chicago School Research has engaged in systematic study of more than 400 Chicago Public Schools to determine organizational traits that are related to improvement in student learning. This effort was designed to help explain widely divergent levels of student success between very similar schools in the Chicago system. Initial discussions with educators at all levels, reviews of previous research, pilot studies, and field studies led to the identification of five school contextual factors – the 5Essential Supports – determined to be critical to school success: (1) effective leaders, (2) collaborative teachers, (3) involved families, (4) supportive environment, and (5) ambitious instruction. The framework of the 5Essential Supports served as a theoretical basis for a survey effort designed to measures and report on facets of school culture that could then be used by school leaders and practitioners to guide school improvement efforts. Research related to the 5Essential Supports consistently demonstrates a strong relationship between the presence of these supports and gains in student achievement. Led by Dr. James McMillan and Dr. Charol Shakeshaft from VCU’s School of Education, the purpose of this MERC study was (1) to develop a shortened version of the 5Essentials staff climate survey for the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium schools, (2) to pilot test the new survey with teachers and administrators, and (3) to determine effective methods of dissemination to support schools use f the survey data for school improvement purposes. The piloting and validation phase of the study demonstrated that the core constructs underlying the 5Essentials maintained high levels of validity and reliability in the shortened version. MERC also piloted and received feedback from school leaders on formats for reporting school climate results

A Report on Research Sessions at the 1980 NWSA Convention

I cannot stress how important for . . . the future of human experience it is to take the development and explication of a feminine perspective in ... research seriously and to devote all our talents and energies collectively to its accomplishment. -Jane Anton As research on women has increased, researchers have become increasingly concerned about how appropriate the existing research methodologies are for the study of women. In one of the earliest critiques, Rae Carlson argued that current research paradigms, which she characterized as involving manipulation, quantification, and control, not only impose restraints on the understanding of female psychology, but also lead to a general impoverishment in the capacity to say anything meaningful about human personality. Concomitantly, feminists began to question the widespread use of socioeconomic status as an independent variable. Marie R. Haug, for instance, pointed out that traditional measures of social class miscategorize about a third of all families because the characteristics of women, particularly working wives, are neglected in the allocation of class position to individuals and families

The treatment of the theme of repentance in religious verse

This study traces the development of the religious application of the "literature of tears" in English verse, beginning in 1595 with the publication of Southwell's Saint Peters complaynt, and concluding in 1610, when the publication of Giles Fletcher's sacred epic and the devotional lyrics of Campion marked the end of the vogue for the penitential "Complaint" established by Southwell's poem. It has been necessary in a few cases to include poems which fall into this category but which were published a few years after 1610.The first chapter deals with the theories of the poets concerning the writing of religious verse, their defensive or defiant attitudes, and their views on style. The second considers briefly the doctrine of repentance according to sixteenth and early seventeenth century theologians and preachers, noting their emphasis on tears and their examples of Biblical penitents. The next five chapters survey the poems grouped around these examples, St. Peter, the Magdalen, the parables, the Penitential Psalms and the Crucifixion, considering in each case theanalysis of repentance and the exhortations to the reader to identify himself with the subject. The last chapter deals in the same way with poems on such penitential themes as the Last Judgement and the transience of life, noting particularly Southwell's and Campion's lyrics, and the application of the sonnet to such topics. The epilogue offers briefly some reasons for the popularity of the theme and summarises the movement of religious verse in the period. Appendices contain unpublished poems from Egerton MS 2477 and biographical information, including some speculations as to the identity of G. Ellis and the relationship of his poem to one by Breton. There is a descriptive bibliography of primary sources and a summary bibliography of secondary sources. <p

Elastic scattering of protons from hydrogen atoms at energies 15-200keV

Differential and integrated cross sections for the elastic process H^+ + H(1s) → H^+ + H(1s) were calculated with the use of results of coupled-state calculations in the energy range 15-200 keV. Results are presented and, at 60 keV, compared favorably with preliminary experimental data. The asymptotic form of the elastic amplitude for b≫a_0 (where b is the impact parameter) is derived for the two cases λ≪1 and λ≫1, where λ is the ratio of the collision duration to the orbital period. The asymptotic form for λ≫1 provides a useful test on the numerical accuracy of the amplitudes

How and when health-care practitioners in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services deliver alcohol screening and brief intervention, and why they don’t: A qualitative study

Introduction. Indigenous Australians experience a disproportionately high burden of alcohol-related harm.Alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) offers the potential to reduce this harm if barriers to its delivery in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) can be optimally targeted. Aims. Examine health-care practitioners’ perceptions of, and practices in, alcohol SBI in ACCHSs. Methods. Semi-structured group interviews with 37 purposively selected health staff across five ACCHSs. Results. Alcohol screening independent of standard health assessments was generally selective. The provision of brief intervention was dependent upon factors related to the patient. Four key factors underlying health-care practitioners’ perceptions of alcohol SBI were prominent: outcome expectancy; role congruence; utilisation of clinical systems and processes; and options for alcohol referral. Discussion. The influence of outcome expectancy and role congruence on health-care practitioners’ alcohol SBI practices has been identified previously, as has to a lesser extent, their less than optimal use of clinical systems and processes. The influence of options for alcohol referral on health-care practitioners’ willingness to deliver alcohol SBI primarily related to their misunderstanding of alcohol SBI and the lack of culturally appropriate alcohol referral options for their patients. Conclusion. An intervention combining interactive, supportive and reinforcing evidencebased dissemination strategies is most likely required to enhance health-care practitioners’ knowledge and skills in alcohol SBI delivery, positively orientate them to their role in its delivery, and facilitate integration of evidence-based alcohol SBI into routine clinical processes and locally available systems.
