Get PDF
The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is generallybuilt around the notion of welfare and ‘giving back’ to society. Thisnotion needs to be investigated and researched with the perspectivethat CSR are strategic investments by corporations aimed at buildingtheir corporate image; which in the long run has a positive impact onboth financial and non-finance related aspects of organizations. Basedon this premise, this paper argues that CSR helps in building andcreating a Corporate Identity (CI) in a competitive society. Findingsthat CSR and CI have a deeper connection with each other aresubstantiated by employing the correlation and SEM tests. Two typesof non-probability sampling techniques were used for collecting data;self-selection and quota sampling. Findings of the study show thatCSR helps the projection of CI and this contributes to the financialhealth of a corporation in the long term, thus qualifying the notion thatCSR is a strategic investment that has a trickledown effect over aperiod of time

Get PDF
Long-Term Evolution, commonly known as 4G LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. TCP protocol plays a significant role in LTE network. Congestion control algorithm is an integral module of TCP that directly determines the performance of the protocol in IP Network. Many TCP variants like TCP-Vegas, TCP-Tahoe, TCP-Reno, TCP-NewReno, TCP-SACK, and TCP-FACK have been proposed for high bandwidth real time services in LTE network [1]. These TCP variants can be used to improve quality of service parameters i.e., throughput, average delay and lost packet in LTE network [2]. Since LTE systems has high-data-rate, low-latency and packet-optimized radio access technology therefore these parameters directly affect the traffic. In this paper, complete LTE Network is simulated using the OPNET simulator to evaluate network performance in real time [3]. The simulated LTE network is tested for each type of TCP protocol and the result is monitored for throughput, end to end delay, http and FTP traffic, re-transmission response time and packets drop etc and the results are plotted. At the end, it is concluded that TCP New Reno has outperformed in terms of throughput, re-transmission rate and http uplink and downlink traffic. In medium size network, the performance of Reno is satisfactory. Similarly changes in mobility rate enhance the performance of TCP Reno in other congestion control algorithms. On the other hand, TCP Cubic is found to be the worst performer for throughput, re-transmission rate and http traffic parameters. Keywords: LTE, QoS, EUTRAN, TCP, http, Opne

Get PDF
Acute type-A aortic dissection is a surgical emergency and has a high rate of short-term mortality. Aortic dissection is highly under-reported in Pakistan. With the technological developments in its management, arterial cannulation technique of direct true lumen cannulation has emerged with improved outcomes. We aimed to compare the mortality and morbidity outcomes between direct true lumen and conventional cannulation techniques for arterial access in patients with acute type- A aortic dissection under a single-centre retrospective review from 2007 to 2017. Mean age of the participants was 43.3±11.6 vs 45±12.4 years with males being dominant in both groups. Frequency of overall morbidity was high in conventional cannulation group (Group-B), though it did not attain statistical significance, (p\u3e0.999). Mortality rate was also high in Group-B (10% vs 30%), (p=0.582). Direct true lumen cannulation is an equally reliable option for establishing cardiopulmonary bypass due to reduced mortality and morbidity and may be given preference when dissection is extending into femoral and innominate arteries

Opinion of Second Language Learners about Writing Difficulties in English Language

Get PDF
English language enjoys a prominent role in Pakistan as an effective communication medium at local and international circles. It is used as a medium of instruction not only in schools but also in colleges and universities. The aim of this study was to explore writing difficulties in the English language faced by second language learners. A survey was conducted for this purpose. Data were collected from four boys and girls public sector colleges. Two hundred and forty five 12th graders studying English as a compulsory subject were randomly selected out of five hundred and twenty. Results of the study indicated that students were facing a lot of difficulties in writing English language due to lack of vocabulary, poor spelling, L1 interference and a poor understanding of grammatical structure. The girls face more writing difficulties than the male students in English language. The method based on identification, investigation, and solutions to language related real life problems should be used for teaching of English from primary school level to higher levels of education.&nbsp

New enviromental friendly initiatives in the production of Melomas (Citrus grandis) in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia

‘Melomas’, a new pomelo clone (Citrus grandis) was introduced to the public in 1998 by MARDI. Several pilotprojects involving the planting of Melomas were conducted to further promote this pomelo clone. One of theseprojects was conducted in Stesen MARDI Kuala Kangsar, Perak and as a result, healthy and vigorous pomelo treeswere grown. In 2007, the pomelo trees managed to produce an abundance of flowers, but surprisingly the fruitsetting had died and almost no harvesting was done. A very low harvest was reported due to an occurrence offungus in numerous locations in Northern Perak in 2007 and 2008. A study was conducted beginning fromJanuary 2007 to December 2011 to tackle this phenomenon. It was noticed that every flowering season coincidedwith high daily rainfalls. The relatively high humid conditions had increased the incidence of Anthracnoseinfection that caused the young flower bud to die and undeveloped fruit sets to drop unattainably. The heavyrainfall severely prolongs raindrop smears on the flower fruit set. Almost every Melomas grower faced the samepredicament. This case study was designed to intervene and stop the causal fungus infection brought by the rain.Transparent plastic covers (TPC) were introduced to prevent raindrops from continuously smearing the flowerbunch. It was stapled onto the branch above the bunch of flowers to form a small half cylinder plastic roofing thatprevents the raindrop falling onto the small fruits. To tackle the problem, a series of workshops and technologytransfer seminars were arranged for the Melomas growers by the MARDI extension personnel. The results showedthat the manipulation of the microenvironment around the flowers had helped the grower to recover andeventually increase the Melomas yield. It was observed that this low-cost technique had significantly increased thenumber of Melomas fruit sets as opposed to the control treatment (without plastic covers). This technique hadbeen practiced by local pomelo farmers in Padang Rengas, spanning over an area of 35 ha and it is being practicedin a pilot project at MARDI Kuala Kangsar. It has a proven 85% success rate and has been reported to significantlyboost the productivity in the area

Aims: The safety and efficacy of the novel selective cardiac myosin activator, omecamtiv mecarbil, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is tested in the Global Approach to Lowering Adverse Cardiac outcomes Through Improving Contractility in Heart Failure (GALACTIC‐HF) trial. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of participants in GALACTIC‐HF and how these compare with other contemporary trials. Methods and Results: Adults with established HFrEF, New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA) ≥ II, EF ≤35%, elevated natriuretic peptides and either current hospitalization for HF or history of hospitalization/ emergency department visit for HF within a year were randomized to either placebo or omecamtiv mecarbil (pharmacokinetic‐guided dosing: 25, 37.5 or 50 mg bid). 8256 patients [male (79%), non‐white (22%), mean age 65 years] were enrolled with a mean EF 27%, ischemic etiology in 54%, NYHA II 53% and III/IV 47%, and median NT‐proBNP 1971 pg/mL. HF therapies at baseline were among the most effectively employed in contemporary HF trials. GALACTIC‐HF randomized patients representative of recent HF registries and trials with substantial numbers of patients also having characteristics understudied in previous trials including more from North America (n = 1386), enrolled as inpatients (n = 2084), systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg (n = 1127), estimated glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 528), and treated with sacubitril‐valsartan at baseline (n = 1594). Conclusions: GALACTIC‐HF enrolled a well‐treated, high‐risk population from both inpatient and outpatient settings, which will provide a definitive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy, as well as informing its potential future implementation
