    Improving Cognitive Development in Secondary Chemistry through Gagne's Events Of Instruction

    The work being presented here intended to investigate the role of Gagne's events of instruction in the teaching learning process. The focus of this study was to bring about improvement in the conceptual framework and strengthening of their neural networks and the pruning misconceptions of students in the subject of chemistry at secondary level and to evaluate whether the events of instruction are helpful to assimilate the stimulus material with the neural networks of the learners. It was also observed that the events of instruction significantly reduced the learning time and simultaneously the assimilation rate was also increased. Information bridging time was reduced to a significant level. Comparison was made between the students taught by Gagne's events and the students taught by traditional method of instruction. The change or significant difference was observed in favor of those students who were treated by Gagne's events of instruction. The study put emphasis on the incorporation of Gagne's events of instruction while planning, designing and teaching phase of lesson plan. The events of instruction need to be employed in the planning and designing phase of teaching learning process. The teachers can improve their pedagogical content knowledge and can design the learning situations and learning environments that are conducive to learning. So the teaching learning process, teacher's teaching skills can be made efficient and effective by incorporating Gagne's events of instruction

    The Effectiveness of Teaching Physics through Project Method on Academic Achievement of Students at Secondary Level -A Case Study

    The aim of this study was to examine the effect of teaching Physics through project method on academic achievement of secondary schools students in the subject of Physics. In this study, an achievement test (pre-test/post-test) covering eight chapters were used as measuring instrument. Depending upon pre academic achievement test scores, eighty (80) science students of 10th class were divided into two equal groups named as experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught through project method and the control group was taught by traditional lecture method. Both the groups were taught for a period of six weeks (40 minutes period per day). The Post test was administered at end of treatments. The marks obtain in Pretest and Posttest of both groups served as data of this study.The analysis of data revealed that on whole, experimental group showed better performance than controlled group. Furthermore the experimental group performed significantly better than control group in learning domain (knowledge, comprehension, and application and skill developments). The results this study indicated that teaching Physics through Project method was more effective as compared to traditional lecture method at secondary level.     Role of plant growth regulators in preservation of Pyrus germplasm in vitro

    In vitro established shoots of nine pear genotypes namely; Khurolli, Bagugosha, Pathar nakh, Desi nakh, Kotharnul, Btangi, Frashishi, Kashmiri nakh, and Raj btung, were preserved by lowering concentration of growth regulators [(0.00, 0.25 or 0.50mg l-1 6-benzyaminopurine (BAP) or adding growth retardants, 10 mg L-1 Alar (diaminazide or B-9), or abscisic acid (ABA)] in the culture medium. The cultures were assessed for their survival and regenerability percentages after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of storage. The genotypes differed significantly for survival and regeneration percentage. The culture medium supplemented with 0.50 mg L-1 BAP was comparatively more effective and resulted in higher survival rate and re-growth after transferring onto the fresh medium. Storage for short duration (3 months) resulted in significantly higher survival and regeneration rates than other storage periods. As storage period was prolonged, survival and regenerability of shoots progressively decreased. Overall results indicated that the shoots of Desi nakh had the highest survival (73.33 %) and Pathar nakh showed the maximum regenerability (67.66 %) when cultured on the medium supplemented with 0.50 mg L-1 BAP and stored for 3 months. However, no shoots of Kotharnul survived when cultured on the medium without any growth regulator and kept for 12 months.Key words: Growth retardants, in vitro preservation, pear genotypes, slow growth

    Trends of climate change in the lower Indus Basin region of Pakistan : future implications for agriculture

    Purpose - Lower Indus Basin (LIB) region is the food basket of Pakistan, and climatic variation in response to global warming might severely affect the crop production and, thus, food security and ultimately to the economy of the country. Design/methodology/approach - The authors analyzed the previous climatic factors data series of LIB region to investigate the past and present climatic trends and to predict the future changes. Climatic changes were monitored by studying temperature, rainfall and relative humidity (RH) dynamics at two locations (Lahore and Multan) of the LIB region, Pakistan, by using data from 1953 to 2006. The data were divided into two equal halves (1953-1979 and 1980-2006) and statistically compared for the aforementioned weather parameters. Findings - The results suggested that mean minimum temperature (MMT) and overall mean temperature in winter were significantly increased, whereas few summer months had also experienced the reduction in both temperatures. However, few minor changes were also observed for the mean maximum temperature at both locations. The rainfall amount did not vary significantly at both locations, with the exception for the months of February and June at Lahore location, which experienced relatively higher rainfall in latter period (1980-2006). However, morning and evening RH was significantly increased at Multan throughout the year and for some selected months (February-March and May-July) at Lahore. However, the comparison of climatic data of both temporal halves suggested either dryer weather during winter months because of increase in MMT and/or increase in area under irrigated agriculture, resulting in more evaporation at both locations. Similarly, the data also indicated the early monsoon rainfall patterns in summer and late western depression rainfall spell during winter, which played key role to affect the crop yield because of irregular rain events. Research limitations/implications - The current manuscript would be very useful for the disaster management authorities and agriculture sector to predict the future irregular trends of climate change in Pakistan. Moreover, current findings can be important tool toward the management of climatic changes issues (i.e. floods and dryer spells) and to formulate the future strategies for the improved crop growth in arid and/or semi-arid developing nations such as Pakistan. Originality/value - The current manuscript, for the very first time, provided detailed insights into key climatic factors changes for past seven decades, into the severely climate change-affected areas of the world. Furthermore, agricultural sector is likely to be severely affected because of minor seasonal change in temperature and moisture, and have a strong food security impact, which can be reflected with current data set to cope with both ecological and economic impacts of climate change in Pakistan.     Objective: To evaluate the accurate radiographic location of the mental foramen and its prevalence by gender and different age groups.Methodology: This Cross-sectional study was conducted at dental department at ISRA University Hospital Hyderabad, from September 2014 to Feb 2015. We studied 70 patients. All patients > 18 years age and both sex and presence of the canine, first premolar, second premolar and first molar in the images were included. Detailed patients’ history was taken and detailed clinical examination was done. Patients were subject to relevant investigation panoramic digital images. All the data was recorded in the proforma.Results: Out of total 70 patients included in this study 30 were male (42.85%) and 40 females (57.14%); with male to female ratio of 1:1.3. The mean age was 22+3.20 years. Mental foramen on radiographic were visible below first premolar in 35(50%) cases followed by mental foramen at below 2nd premolar in 30(42.85 %) cases and below first premolar in 5(7.14%) cases. Variation in the inferior alveolar canal observed. Variation in the inferior alveolar canal was Bifid canal only in two patients.Conclusion: Mental foramen on radiographic were visible below first premolar 50%, below 2nd premolar 42.85% and below first premolar in 7.14%. While no significant relationship was found with gender and age

    PO10.19 clinical spectrum of pseudo seizures at a tertiary care hospital Karachi: a video EEG based study

    Background: Nonepileptic seizures are involuntary episodes of movement, sensation, or behaviors (e.g., vocalization, crying and other expressions of emotion), that do not result from abnormal cortical discharges. The events typically occur in teenage patients with anxiety and affective disorders. Psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, drugs, hypnosis and placebo are mainstay of treatment. There is no published data on clinical characteristics of pseudo-seizures from Pakistan. The objective of our study is to describe the clinical characteristics of pseudoseizures in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: This is a descriptive study. Patients with pseudo-seizures were identified from departmental Video EEG monitoring register, over a period of three years (2004 2006). Their neurophysiologic and video recording data was reviewed and their demographic, clinical and neurophysiologic data was recorded and analyzed. SPSS version 15.0 was used for analysis. Results: A total of 132 patients underwent video EEG during the period and 51 (38%) had pseudo-seizures. Their mean age was 26.7±15.3 years. Thirty-two (63%) were female and 19 (37%) were male. Twelve (23.5%) patients were known epileptics. Median recording time was 24 (range; 0.33 55) hours and median number of events was 3 (range; 1 14). Limb movements were most common manifestation (67%) followed by muteness with no response to verbal commands (49%), behavioral symptoms (35.5%), ocular findings i.e. eye blinking and closure (25.5%), depressed conscious level (13.7%), headache (10%) and GI symptoms (10%). Six (11.8%) patients experienced epileptic seizures, in addition to pseudo-seizures. Conclusions: Pseudo-seizures are common in patients referred for video EEG monitoring. It is more common in young women. Limb movements, muteness and behavioral symptoms are most common manifestations. The pseudo-seizures and epileptic seizures may coexist in the same patient

    Efficacy of Live attenuated and Inactivated Oil Emulsion Infectious Bursal Disease Virus Vaccines in Broiler chicks

    This study was carried out with the aims to evaluate the efficacy of indigenous live and inactivated Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) vaccines in broilers. Two hundred and fifty (250), a-day-old broiler chicks divided into five groups (A-E) were immunized with live and inactivated vaccine at varying ages. Live vaccine was given to group A (at 8 days post hatch), B (at 8, 15 days post hatch), C (at 8, 15 and 23 days post hatch) and D (at 8 days post hatch). In addition group D received a booster dose of inactivated vaccine at 21 days of age, while group E served as control. Antibody titers were measured via Agar Gel Precipitation (AGP) test and ELISA, while the degree of protection against the virulent strains of IBDV was also recorded. Results showed that vaccine program adopted for group C and D produced significantly (P<0.05) higher antibody titer as compared to other groups. While a significant (P<0.05) difference in antibody titers was observed between group A and B while no considerable antibodies were detected in group E. The response to challenge dose was recorded as the difference of lesions in bursa, pectoral muscles or other visceral organs with the exception of group C and D. The study suggests that broiler chicks may be vaccinated at days 8, 15 and 23 with live attenuated vaccine or live attenuated vaccine followed by inactivated vaccine at days 8 and 21 that could provide an adequate protection against the virulent form of IBDV

    Role of gene therapy in fanconi anemia: A systematic and literature review with future directions

    Gene therapy (GT) has been reported to improve bone marrow function in individuals with Fanconi anemia (FA); however, its clinical application is still in the initial stages. We conducted this systematic review, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, to assess the long-term safety and clinical outcomes of GT in FA patients. Electronic searches from PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were conducted and full texts of articles meeting our inclusion criteria were reviewed. Three clinical trials were included, with a total of nine patients and mean age of 10.7 ± 5.7 years. All patients had lentiviral-mediated GT. A 1-year follow-up showed stabilization in blood lineages, without any serious adverse effects from GT. A metaregression analysis could not be conducted, as very little long-term follow-up data of patients was observed, and the median survival rate could not be calculated. Thus, we can conclude that GT seems to be a safe procedure in FA; however, further research needs to be conducted on the longitudinal clinical effects of GT in FA, for a better insight into its potential to become a standard form of treatment

    Effect of spinning variables on packing density of cotton yarn

    In this study, fibre distribution through the cross-sections of ring-spun yarns and their packing density values has been investigated to provide a better understanding of the internal structures of ring-spun yarns manufactured by changing different spinning variables. After the yarn manufacturing process, diameter, IPI index, uniformity index, single yarn strength, density and hairiness are tested and then evaluation of tests is done on the Minitab and Microsoft Excel. The impact of TPI, spindle speed, count, hairiness and diameter has been analyzed using yarn packing density as a response variable. The aim of present study is to produce a yarn with improved packing density so that the yarn properties could be predetermined.
