    Does Modern Econometrics replicate the Phillips Curve?

    This paper reexamines the existence of a long-run relationship between wages and unemployment in the U.K., with data over the period 1860-1913 used by A.W. Phillips to derive the well-known Phillips Curve. Using Johansen's maximum likelihood method of testing for cointegration, a long-run inverse relationship is indeed depicted between the rate of inflation and the unemployment rate. However, the main impact of deviations from this long-run equilibrium is on the unemployment rate rather than the rate of inflation.Phillips Curve; long-run equilibrium; cointegration

    Production of oxygen from lunar ilmenite

    The overall objective of this project was to develop a novel carbothermal reduction process for production of oxygen from lunar ilmenite. The specific objective was to use a reaction sequence in which a wide variety of carbonaceous compounds (including carbonaceous wastes) can be used as reducing agents. During the first phase, two reactor systems were designed, constructed, and operated to study the reaction fundamental important in this process. One system is a small fluidized bed, and the other is a thermo-gravimetric reactor system. Preliminary experiments on synthetic ilmenite are conducted to study the effect of carbon type, carbon loading, temperature, and gas flow rate. Results indicate that a reaction path based on carbon gasification can be used to promote the overall kinetics. A unique temperature and concentration-programmed reaction procedure was being developed for rapid parametric study of the process

    Modeling and Simulation of Solar Photovoltaic Cell for the Generation of Electricity in UAE

    This paper proposes the implementation of a circuit based simulation for a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) cell in order to get the maximum power output. The model is established based on the mathematical model of the PV module. As the PV cell is used to determine the physical and electrical behavior of the cell corresponding to environmental factors such as temperature and solar irradiance, this paper evaluates thirty years solar irradiation data in United Arab Emirates (UAE), also analyzes the performance parameters of PV cell for several locations. Based on the Shockley diode equation, a solar PV module is presented. However, to analyze the performance parameters, Solarex MSX 120, a typical 120W module is selected. The mathematical model for the chosen module is executed in Matlab. The consequence of this paper reflects the effects of variation of solar irradiation on PV cell within UAE. We first consider the bipartite case and review in a unified way the case of general Pauli channels. We discuss both the cases of unitary and non-unitary encoding.     We study the super dense coding capacity in the presence of quantum channels with correlated noise. We investigate both the cases of unitary and non-unitary encoding. Pauli channels for arbitrary dimensions are treated explicitly. The super dense coding capacity for some special channels and resource states is derived for unitary encoding. We also provide an example of a memory channel where non-unitary encoding leads to an improvement in the super dense coding capacity.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Optimal super dense coding over noisy quantum channels

    We investigate super dense coding in the presence of noise, i.e. the subsystems of the entangled resource state have to pass a noisy unital quantum channel between the sender and the receiver. We discuss explicitly the case of Pauli channels in arbitrary dimension and derive the super dense coding capacity (i.e. the optimal information transfer) for some given resource states. We also study the case that the initial resource state can be chosen: for the qubit depolarizing channel we show that there is a threshold value for the noise parameter, below which the super dense coding protocol is optimized by a maximally entangled initial state, while above the threshold the dense coding capacity for any entangled initial state is smaller than the one for a product state. Finally, we provide an example of a noisy channel where non-unitary pre-processing increases the super dense coding capacity, as compared to only unitary encoding.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Identifying and Forecasting the Turning Points of the Belgian Business Cycle with Regime-Switching and Logit Models

    This paper seeks to elaborate econometric models that can be used to forecast the turning points of the Belgian business cycle. We begin by suggesting three reference cycle, which we hope will fill the void of an official reference chronology for Belgium. We then construct two different types of model to estimate the probabilities of recession : Markov-switching models, and Logit models. We apply each approach to a limited set of data, which are a good representation of the economy, are available early and are subject to only minor revisions. We then select the best performing model for each chronology and type of approach. The out-of-sample results show that the models provide useful indicators of business cycle turning points. They are however far from perfect forecasting tools, especially when it comes to forecasting periods of classical recession.Refrence chronologies; Markov-Switching and Logit models, forecasting business cycle turning points
