    Relation between parvovirus B19 infection and fetal mortality and spontaneous abortion

    Background: Infection with parvovirus B19 may cause fetal losses including spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death and non-immune hydrops fetalis. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of parvovirus B19 in formalin fixed placental tissues in lost fetuses using real-time PCR method. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 100 formalin fixed placental tissues with unknown cause of fetal death were determined using real-time PCR method after DNA extraction. Results: Six out of 100 cases (6) were positive for parvovirus B19 using real-time PCR. Gestational age of all positive cases was less than 20 weeks with a mean of 12.3 weeks. Three cases have a history of abortion and all of positive cases were collected in spring. Mean age of positive cases were 28 years. Conclusion: Parvovirus B19 during pregnancy can infect red precursor cells and induces apoptosis or lyses these cells that resulting in anemia and congestive heart failure leading to fetal death. Management of parvovirus B19 infection in pregnant women is important because immediate diagnosis and transfusion in hydropsic fetuses can decrease the risk of fetal death

    A randomized clinical trial of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic treatment of emotional and gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: evaluating efficacy and mechanism of change

    Abstract Objective The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of Unified Protocol (UP) for transdiagnostic treatment of psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, and treating the intensity of gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Another aim of the study was to test whether emotion regulation mediates the effect of UP. Methods Among 91 patients diagnosed with IBS (using ROME III criteria), 64 patients were eligible to participate in the study based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. These patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 32) that participated in 12 weekly UP treatment sessions or to a wait-list control group (n = 32). All patients completed the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-42), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale (GSRS) pre- and post-intervention. The data were analyzed with SPSS 20.0 software. Results The results of intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis indicated a significant decrease in depression, anxiety, stress, and gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as significant improvements in emotion regulation scores in the intervention group post intervention. All results were significant at P < .001. Mediation analyses indicated that changes in emotion regulation mediated the effect of UP on changes in emotional and gastrointestinal symptoms. Conclusion UP was effective and influential in emotion regulation among the intervention group and caused a decline in emotional and gastrointestinal symptoms. Hence, this intervention is promising, but larger RCTs are needed to more investigate its efficacy. Future studies could also examine the efficacy of the UP in other medical conditions with co-occurring psychological conditions.     Extraction-spectrophotometric determination of nickel at microgram level in water and wastewater using 2-[(2-mercaptophenylimino)methyl]phenol

    An extraction-spectrophotometric method for determination of nickel at sub ppm level using 2-[(2-mercaptophenylimino)methyl]phenol (MPMP) as the new extractant is described. The reagent reacts with nickel(II) at pH > 10 and form a 1:2 brown complex, which is extracted into chloroform. The complex has a maximum absorption at 421 nm with the molar absorptivity of 2.41 × 105 M-1 cm-1. Beer’s law is obeyed over the range of 0.011-0.30 µg mL-1. The Sandell’s sensitivity for 0.001 absorbance unit is 5.34 × 10-4 µg cm-2. The relative standard deviation at 0.018 µg mL-1 is 1.1 % (n = 8). The procedure was successfully applied to determination of nickel in wastewater and standard alloy and the accuracy was determined by recovery experiment, independent analysis by furnace-AAS, and analysis of a certified reference martial. KEY WORDS: Ni determination, Liquid-liquid extraction, Schiff bases, Spectrophotometry Bull.     Energy-scales convergence for optimal and robust quantum transport in photosynthetic complexes

    Underlying physical principles for the high efficiency of excitation energy transfer in light-harvesting complexes are not fully understood. Notably, the degree of robustness of these systems for transporting energy is not known considering their realistic interactions with vibrational and radiative environments within the surrounding solvent and scaffold proteins. In this work, we employ an efficient technique to estimate energy transfer efficiency of such complex excitonic systems. We observe that the dynamics of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex leads to optimal and robust energy transport due to a convergence of energy scales among all important internal and external parameters. In particular, we show that the FMO energy transfer efficiency is optimum and stable with respect to the relevant parameters of environmental interactions and Frenkel-exciton Hamiltonian including reorganization energy λ\lambda, bath frequency cutoff γ\gamma, temperature TT, bath spatial correlations, initial excitations, dissipation rate, trapping rate, disorders, and dipole moments orientations. We identify the ratio of \lambda T/\gamma\*g as a single key parameter governing quantum transport efficiency, where g is the average excitonic energy gap.Comment: minor revisions, removing some figures, 19 pages, 19 figure

    Psychometric properties of the persian version of the avoidance and fusion questionnaire for youth

    Background and purpose: Avoidance and cognitive fusion are two components of psychological inflexibility and are the main concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y8). Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 300 students in Kashan, Iran who were selected by cluster sampling. The Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y8) and the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS) were administered to collect the data. The factor structure of the questionnaire was evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Also, the convergent validity with RCMAS, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of this questionnaire were examined. Results: Exploratory factor analysis indicated one factor called psychological inflexibility. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the one factor model of the questionnaire (RMSEA 90 CI =0.00-0.07). Also, the convergent validity with RCMAS was found to be good (r = 0.60, p<0.001) and the internal consistency and test-retest reliability (4 weeks interval) were 0.71 and 0.65, respectively. Conclusion: AFQ-Y8 is an appropriate tool with acceptable psychometric properties to measure the psychological inflexibility of adolescents in Iran. © 2018, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences.     Investigation of histone lysine-specific demethylase 5D (KDM5D) isoform expression in prostate cancer cell lines: A system approach

    Background: It is now well-demonstrated that histone demethylases play an important role in developmental controls, cell-fate decisions, and a variety of diseases such as cancer. Lysine-specific demethylase 5D (KDM5D) is a male-specific histone demethylase that specifically demethylates di- and tri-methyl H3K4 at the start site of active gene. In this light, the aim of this study was to investigate isoform/transcript-specific expression profiles of KDM5D in three prostate cancer cell lines, Du-145, LNCaP, and PC3. Methods: Real-time PCR analysis was performed to determine the expression levels of different KDM5D transcripts in the prostate cell lines. A gene regulatory network was established to analyze the gene expression profile. Results: Significantly different expression levels of both isoforms were found among the three cell lines. Interestingly, isoform I was expressed in three cell lines while isoform III did only in DU-145. The expression levels of both isoforms were higher in DU-145 when compared to other cell lines (P<0.0001). The observed expression profile was determined by using regulatory network analyses. Conclusion: The present study, for the first time, not only showed the expression profiles of KDM5D isoforms in prostate cancer cell lines but also evaluated the effects of the gene regulatory network on the expression profile of this gene. © 2016, Pasteur Institute of Iran.     Factor structure and reliability of the mindfulness attention awareness scale for adolescents and the relationship between mindfulness and anxiety in adolescents

    Background: In recent years, application and practice of mindfulness-based interventions to reduce adolescent psychological problems are increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to design and study tools that measure mindfulness and its effects. Objectives: One of the available tools to measure mindfulness in adolescents is the mindfulness attention awareness scale for adolescents (MAAS-A). The current study aimed at examining the factor structure and reliability of a Persian version of this scale and investigating the relationship between mindfulness and anxiety. Methods: The current descriptive, cross sectional and psychometric study was conducted on 354 students from Kashan city, Iran, selected via the cluster sampling method in 2017. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) by the principle component analysis method, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and the relationship between mindfulness and anxiety were conducted to examine the validity of the MAAS-A. To calculate the reliability of the MAAS-A, Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability (four-week interval) were employed. The statistical analysis was performed with SPSS version 19.0 and AMOS-22. Results: The results of the EFA suggested two factors for this scale labeled as �acting with attention and awareness� and �attention to the present moment�. The CFA confirmed the two-factor model of the 14-item scale (the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) 90 confidence interval (CI) = 0.001 - 0.06). The reliability of this scale was good (α = 0.81, retest reliability = 0.86) and the correlation between mindfulness and anxiety was negative and significant (r = -0.43, P < 0.01). Also, this relationship was significant in females (r = -0.44, P < 0.01) and males (r = -0.46, P < 0.01). Conclusions: According to the results of the current study, the MAAS-A was a reliable and valuable scale to measure the mindfulness of adolescents. The results of correlation between mindfulness and anxiety meant that by increasing mindfulness, the anxiety reduced in adolescents. ©2018, Author(s).     MHC class II deficiency: Report of a novel mutation and special review

    The MHC II deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive primary immunodeficiency syndrome with increased susceptibility to respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, failure to thrive and early mortality. This syndrome is caused by mutations in transcription regulators of the MHC II gene and results in development of blind lymphocytes due to the lack of indicatory MHC II molecules. Despite homogeneity of clinical manifestations of patients with MHC II deficiency, the genetic defects underlying this disease are heterogeneous. Herein, we report an Iranian patient with MHC II deficiency harbouring a novel mutation in RFXANK and novel misleading clinical features. He had ataxic gait and dysarthria from 30 months of age. Epidemiology, clinical and immunological features, therapeutic options and prognosis of patients with MHC II are reviewed in this paper. © 2017 SEICAP. Published by Elsevier Espana, ˜ S.L.U.     Peganum harmala L.'s anti-growth effect on a breast cancer cell line

    This research was done to evaluate the induction of apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line by Peganum harmala's extract, in which a significant amount of \u3b2-carbolines is included. The apoptosis incidence was assessed through Annexin-V-Flous kit. The expressions of genes through which intrinsic apoptosis pathway are involved, Bax, Bcl-2, Bid, and Puma, over the genes the expressions of which are linked to extrinsic apoptosis pathway, TRAIL, Caspase8, p21, and p53, were examined by RT-PCR and Real-time PCR. The results demonstrate that the extract decreases the growth rate of the cancer cell line through inducing apoptosis mechanism. As long as the expression of anti-apoptosis Bcl-2 gen reduced dramatically, an over-expression in Bax and Puma genes was monitored indicating activation of intrinsic apoptosis pathway. A notable over-expression observed with TRAIL and Caspase8 genes as well as Bid gene. The latter is an intermediate for both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis. \ua9 2015 The Author
