Daily functioning, problem solving and satisfaction for quality of life in visually impaired old persons

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of several dimensions of functioning on satisfaction for quality of life (QoL) experienced by visually impaired older adults. Participants: A sample of 58 older adults (37 women and 21 men) was involved in the study. Their age ranged from 50 to 88 years (M=68.95, SD=1.51). They were characterized by visual impairment of different origin and visual acuity (VA) ranging from 4/10 to total blindness. The QoL questionnaire was used along with short form-12 health Survey, the National Eye Institute visual function questionnaire-25 and problem solving inventory (PSI) which analyzes problem solving appraisal. Results: A stepwise regression analysis was conducted in order to find predictors of satisfaction for QoL. A contribution of mental and physical health, more specifically, of problem solving appraisal was found. Conclusion: Results support the notion that the functional relationship between visual impairment and satisfaction for QoL must be understood in terms of approaches that incorporate psychological and socio-cognitive elements. Problem solving appraisal, in fact, makes a substantial contribution to the prediction of variance in life satisfaction and it may play an important role for intervention strategies

Positive Assessment as Support to Personal Life Designing in Transition to Adulthood: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Transitioning to adulthood is a natural process involving multiple factors. Adolescents living with developmental disabilities experience more difficulties in anticipating and dealing with transitions, in moving toward positive adulthood trajectories. According to current counseling literature some resources are particularly relevant in order to support these goals. The case study presented here is an example of the possibility and usefulness of giving voice to adolescents with developmental disability who are close to life transitions and assessing their resilience, adaptability, courage and future goals. Professionals interested in social and work inclusion of young adults with developmental disabilities are then invited to highlight relevant attitudes toward everyday life and resources for future life designin

Sgaramella, C. (2012). ligation overcomes terminal underrepresentation in multiple displacement amplification of linear dna

The amount of DNA available for informative genomic studies is often limiting. Thus, several methods have been developed to achieve a whole genome amplification (WGA). Particu-larly promising is a variant, called multiple displacement amplification (MDA) (1,2), which exploits the high processivity of Φ29 phage DNA polymerase and suffers an amplifi-cation bias significantly lower than previous, PCR-based WGA (3).Even though MDA-DNA has been successfully used for many applica-tions (1,4–7), some problems have been reported. For example, sequences near the ends of linear chromosomes appear underrepresented after MDA (6,8,9). Both defective priming events and abortive chain terminations could contribute to this problem, which limits the applications of MDA and jeopardizes its use on short linear DNA (e.g., cDNA and degraded genomes from forensic, archeological, and fetal origin) (10). In these cases, the terminal underrepresentation would cause the loss of substantial information. We studied this problem using λ phage DNA (48.5 kb; Promega Biosciences, San Luis Obispo, CA, USA). MDA was performed using the Genomiph

Sensible ecologies. Collaborative art and ecosocial crisis in the American context

[EN] This paper includes the partial findings of a research stay held at the Center for Creative Ecologies of the University of California Santa Cruz (U.S.A.). Starting from an analysis of the multiple forms of invisibilization of the contemporary ecosocial crisis (Herrero 2013, Riechmann 2011), I explore the intersections between ecology-related art forms and collaborative processes. In particular, referring to the potential of art to reconfigure the sensible and distribute forms of visibility (Rancière 2008) together with its ability to address complex issues such as environmental and from a post-anthropocentric perspective (Demos 2017), I examine the work of artists and groups currently active in the Americas such as Carolina Caycedo (Colombia), The Harrison Studio (United States) and Desert Art Lab (United States). Through a critical analysis of their artistic projects and semi-structured interviews with artists and curators, I study the artists’ intentionality and the different collaborative strategies they use to make the impacts of the extractivist model visible together with the social struggles for the preservation of ecosystems and indigenous knowledge systems, and the processes of resilience and adaptation of non-human organisms to anthropogenic climate change. The chosen geopolitical context is especially significant because of the pervasiveness of the neoliberal paradigm that has characterized it in recent decades, with the consequent erosion of both social and environmental rights. At the same time, the presence of countercultural movements linked to ecology, feminism and the defense of the native cultures of the Americas has allowed the emergence of alternative discourses and models of coexistence that have nurtured and inspired the artistic manifestations our study revolves around.Sgaramella, C. Control of Penicillium expansum by an epiphytic basidiomycetous yeast

Postharvest biocontrol agents are considered a viable alternative to the use of synthetic chemicals as demonstrated by extensive research conducted by scientists and companies worldwide. In the present investigation, the biocontrol potential of a carotenoid-producing basidiomycetous yeast isolated from table grape flowers was analyzed. The strain RY1 proved to be Sporobolomyces roseus. In vitro and in vivo tests were conducted to assess its efficacy against Penicillium expansum, one of the most important postharvest pathogens and producer of the mycotoxin patulin. The yeast proved to control both fungal growth and patulin production, and, in addition, to greatly affect disease incidence and severity on apples. Its mode of action is presumably related both to the competition for nutrients and the production of antifungal volatiles. As such, although further large-scale trials are needed, our S. roseus strain represents a potential interesting biocontrol agent to be applied after harvest
