    Design and Construction of a Nernst Effect Measuring System

    An experimental Nernst effect measuring system is designed and constructed. The ability to measure the Nernst effect allows completion of a thermoelectric suite of measurements consisting of electrical conductivity, the Seebeck effect, the Hall effect, and the Nernst effect. This suite of measurements gives information about electron transport, carrier concentration, and electron scattering within a thermoelectric sample. Programs were designed in LabView to control the various instruments in the measuring system. Measurements of the Nernst effect were taken on two thermoelectric samples, bismuth nickel telluride and bismuth antimony telluride. These measurements were taken at both constant temperature and constant magnetic field. An error analysis of the Nernst effect measuring system is also presented, with consideration as to future work that can be done to improve the quality of Nernst effect measurements taken from the system

    Factor Price Equalization in Heckscher-Ohlin Model

    This paper investigates the likelihood of factor-price equalization under the simple assumptions of Heckscher-Ohlin Theory. Factor-price equalization is also directly related to whether countries specialize or not in the global market. A full-equilibrium in the world requires not only the equilibrium in the production side of the economy, but also the supply-demand equality in the world. However, once we obtain an equilibrium in the production side of the economy, it is always possible to define demand in a way to get supply-demand equality at any production side equilibrium amounts. Therefore, it is not possible to talk about factor-price equalization without specifying demand in the economy. Using L-P diagrams, the paper demonstrates how both factor-price equalization and non-equalization cases are possible when we look at only the production side of the economy. It is also demonstrated that the equilibrium possibilities will be much larger for factor-price equalization case if the number of commodities is more than the number of factors of production. However, the larger possibilities do not refer to different real equilibria, but only to indeterminacy in production. When demand is introduced in the economy and supply-demand equality constraints are respected, we see that factor-prices might or might not be equalized depending on factor endowments, production functions and demand. The paper demonstrates this by introducing a model with 2 countries, 2 factors of production, 3 goods and CES utility function. Finally, using comparative statistics on this simple model, the conditions under which the likelihood of factor-price equalization increases are determined.

    Jurassic–Paleogene intraoceanic magmatic evolution of the Ankara Mélange, north-central Anatolia, Turkey

    Oceanic rocks in the Ankara Mélange along the Izmir–Ankara–Erzincan suture zone (IAESZ) in north-central Anatolia include locally coherent ophiolite complexes (~ 179 Ma and ~ 80 Ma), seamount or oceanic plateau volcanic units with pelagic and reefal limestones (96.6 ± 1.8 Ma), metamorphic rocks with ages of 256.9 ± 8.0 Ma, 187.4 ± 3.7 Ma, 158.4 ± 4.2 Ma, and 83.5 ± 1.2 Ma indicating northern Tethys during the late Paleozoic through Cretaceous, and subalkaline to alkaline volcanic and plutonic rocks of an island arc origin (~ 67–63 Ma). All but the arc rocks occur in a shale–graywacke and/or serpentinite matrix, and are deformed by south-vergent thrust faults and folds that developed in the middle to late Eocene due to continental collisions in the region. Ophiolitic volcanic rocks have mid-ocean ridge (MORB) and island arc tholeiite (IAT) affinities showing moderate to significant large ion lithophile elements (LILE) enrichment and depletion in Nb, Hf, Ti, Y and Yb, which indicate the influence of subduction-derived fluids in their melt evolution. Seamount/oceanic plateau basalts show ocean island basalt (OIB) affinities. The arc-related volcanic rocks, lamprophyric dikes and syenodioritic plutons exhibit high-K shoshonitic to medium- to high-K calc-alkaline compositions with strong enrichment in LILE, rare earth elements (REE) and Pb, and initial <i>&epsilon;</i><sub>Nd</sub> values between +1.3 and +1.7. Subalkaline arc volcanic units occur in the northern part of the mélange, whereas the younger alkaline volcanic rocks and intrusions (lamprophyre dikes and syenodioritic plutons) in the southern part. The late Permian, Early to Late Jurassic, and Late Cretaceous amphibole-epidote schist, epidote-actinolite, epidote-chlorite and epidote-glaucophane schists represent the metamorphic units formed in a subduction channel in the northern Neotethys. The Middle to Upper Triassic neritic limestones spatially associated with the seamount volcanic rocks indicate that the northern Neotethys was an open ocean with its MORB-type oceanic lithosphere by the early Triassic (or earlier). The latest Cretaceous–early Paleocene island arc volcanic, dike and plutonic rocks with subalkaline to alkaline geochemical affinities represent intraoceanic magmatism that developed on and across the subduction–accretion complex above a N-dipping, southward-rolling subducted lithospheric slab within the northern Neotethys. The Ankara Mélange thus exhibits the record of ~ 120–130 million years of oceanic magmatism in geological history of the northern Neotethys

    Lack of nAChR Activity Depresses Cochlear Maturation and Up-Regulates GABA System Components: Temporal Profiling of Gene Expression in α9 Null Mice

    It has previously been shown that deletion of chrna9, the gene encoding the alpha9 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subunit, results in abnormal synaptic terminal structure. Additionally, all nAChR-mediated cochlear activity is lost, as characterized by a failure of the descending efferent system to suppress cochlear responses to sound. In an effort to characterize the molecular mechanisms underlying the structural and functional consequences following loss of alpha9 subunit expression, we performed whole-transcriptome gene expression analyses on cochleae of wild type and alpha9 knockout (alpha9(-/-)) mice during postnatal days spanning critical periods of synapse formation and maturation.Data revealed that loss of alpha9 receptor subunit expression leads to an up-regulation of genes involved in synaptic transmission and ion channel activity. Unexpectedly, loss of alpha9 receptor subunit expression also resulted in an increased expression of genes encoding GABA receptor subunits and the GABA synthetic enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase. These data suggest the existence of a previously unrecognized association between the nicotinic cholinergic and GABAergic systems in the cochlea. Computational analyses have highlighted differential expression of several gene sets upon loss of nicotinic cholinergic activity in the cochlea. Time-series analysis of whole transcriptome patterns, represented as self-organizing maps, revealed a disparate pattern of gene expression between alpha9(-/-) and wild type cochleae at the onset of hearing (P13), with knockout samples resembling immature postnatal ages.We have taken a systems biology approach to provide insight into molecular programs influenced by the loss of nicotinic receptor-based cholinergic activity in the cochlea and to identify candidate genes that may be involved in nicotinic cholinergic synapse formation, stabilization or function within the inner ear. Additionally, our data indicate a change in the GABAergic system upon loss of alpha9 nicotinic receptor subunit within the cochlea

    Characterization of the GM1 oligosaccharide transport across the blood-brain-barrier

    Ganglioside GM1 has demonstrated to attenuate Parkinson Disease (PD) symptoms in clinical and preclinical trials. Nevertheless, the GM1 efficacy revealed in vitro is critically reduced in vivo, because of the amphiphilic behavior that limits the passage across the blood brain barrier (BBB). In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that GM1 exerts neurotrophic functions by interacting with plasma membrane (PM) proteins throughout its oligosaccharide portion (OligoGM1). Furthermore, OligoGM1 intravenously or subcutaneously injected into mice is absorbed and taken up by different organs and tissues, including brain. In order to take advantage of GM1 oligosaccharide properties and to overcome GM1 pharmacological limitation, this study has been aimed by the investigation of the OligoGM1 transportthrough the BBB, by using a human in vitro model for human brain-like endothelial cells (hBLEC). Ruled out the toxicity of OligoGM1 on hBLEC, the OligoGM1 transport across the hBBB has been analyzed, finding out a 20 fold higher rate than GM1 and a time and concentration dependence. In order to characterize the OligoGM1 passage, a direct evaluation of the OligoGM1 interaction with the ABC-transporters was carried on, leaving out this way for OligoGM1 transport. Moreover, inverse- and 4\ub0C-transport experiments were performed excluding the implication of the active transport for OligoGM1 passage across the hBLEC, leading to consider the passive-paracellular route. Furthermore, after the hBLEC transport, OligoGM1 maintained its stability and capacity to induce neuritogenesis in the mouse neuroblastoma cells line Neuro2a. This preliminary study has improved the knowledge about the GM1 pharmacological potential by proving that OligoGM1 can cross advantageously the BBB, offering a new promising therapeutic strategy

    The goal of our work aims at implementing progressively an action selection affective model for virtual humans that should be in the end autonomous, adaptive and sociable. Affect, traditionallydistinguished from "cold" cognition, regroups emotions and motivations which are highly intertwined.We present a bottom-up approach by implementing first a motivational model of action selection to obtain motivationally autonomous virtual humans. For the adaptability of virtual humans and completeness of our affective model of action selection, we will define the interactions between motivations and emotions in order to integrate an emotional layer. In order to understand how they affect decision making in virtual humans, the motivations should represent more quantitative aspect of the decision making whereas emotions should be more qualitative one

    Patterns of antibiotic use in hospital-acquired infections.

    BACKGROUND: Monitoring the use of antimicrobials in hospitalized patients is critical owing to the risk of resistance selection. This study aimed to describe the patterns of antimicrobial prescription for the most frequent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in France, relating drugs and microbiological data. METHODS: We used data from the 2017 point-prevalence survey of HAI and antimicrobial use in France, a large nationally representative sample survey of inpatients. We sought unambiguous correspondence between individual indications of antibiotic regimen and HAI sites to determine which molecules were directed towards which pathogen, considering its resistance profile. RESULTS: Among 75,698 adult patients from 401 hospitals, 5.1% had an active HAI and 4.3% were being treated for an HAI. The two most frequent antibiotic indications were lower respiratory tract (LRTI, 27.7%) and urinary tract infections (UTI, 18.4%). For LRTI, the most prescribed antibiotic was amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (27.6%) and most frequently isolated pathogens (each accounting for around 17% of isolates) were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Meticillin-resistant S. aureus LRTI was more likely to be treated with linezolid. For UTI, ofloxacin, ceftriaxone, amoxicillin/co-amoxiclav were most-prescribed (∼13% each) and E. coli predominantly isolated (52.0%). Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli UTI were more likely treated by fosfomycin, pivmecillinam or ertapenem. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a baseline of antimicrobial use in relation to microbiological information in patients with the most common HAIs. These results can serve to direct future efforts in antimicrobial stewardship. Our work could be extended to a broader population, notably in Europe where similar surveys have been conducted
