    Synthesis of magnesium silicate from wheat husk ash: Effects of parameters on structural and surface properties

    In the present study, magnesium silicate was produced by using wheat husk ash. Wheat husk was burned at 600 °C to obtain an amorphous ash structure, and the ash was processed with sodium hydroxide solution with heat to extract silica. Sodium silicate solution and magnesium salts were used to synthesize magnesium silicate. The present study investigates effects of the feeding rate on magnesium silicate production (0.6 mL/min, 35 mL/min, 70 mL/min), the type of magnesium salt (MgSO4 • 7H2O or MgCl2 • 6H2O), temperature (25 °C or 50 °C), and the washing agent (water and acetone) on the chemical composition and surface characteristics of magnesium silicate. The results demonstrated that all of the variables affected the surface characteristics of magnesium silicate, such as surface area, particle size, and pore volume. However, it was also observed that the studied parameters did not affect the chemical composition of magnesium silicate. The wheat husk ash-based magnesium silicates obtained in the experimental study had a BET surface area ranging from 79 to 91 m2/g and a particle size varying from 42 to 63 µm

    Enzymatic activity of a novel halotolerant lipase from Haloarcula hispanica 2TK2

    A strain of Haloarcula hispanica isolated from Tuzkoy salt mine, Turkey exhibited extracellular lipolytic activity. Important parameters such as carbon sources and salt concentration for lipase production were investigated. Optimal conditions for the enzyme production from Haloarcula hispanica 2TK2 were determined. It was observed that the lipolytic activity of Haloarcula hispanica was stimulated by some of the carbon sources. The high lipase acitivity values were obtained in the presence of 2% (v/v) walnut oil (6.16 U/ml), 1% (v/v) fish oil (5.07 U/ml), 1% (v/v) olive oil (4.52 U/ml) and 1% (w/v) stearic acid (4.88 U/ml) at 4M NaCl concentration. Lipase was partially purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and ultrafiltration. Optimal temperature and pH values were determined as 45°C and 8.0, respectively. Lipase activity decreased with the increasing salt concentration, but 85% activity of the enzyme was maintained at 5M NaCl concentration. The enzyme preserved 41% of its relative activity at 90°C. The partially purified lipase maintained its activity in the presence of surfactants such as Triton X-100 and SDS. Therefore, the lipase which is an extremozyme may have potential applications especially in detergent industry

    Amoxicillin loaded hollow microparticles in the treatment of osteomyelitis disease using single-nozzle electrospinning

Also, hollow microparticles are loaded withamoxicillin (AMX) and their drug delivery capabilities have been studied according to a treatment of osteomyelitis disease.The morphology, chemical groups, particle size, antimicrobial activity, and AMX drug release were systematically studied usingscanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hollow microparticle size measurements, antimicrobial activity test, and UV spectroscopy. In vitro biocompatibility was analyzed with humanbone osteosarcoma (U2OS) cell line. This present work can help in the design of a drug delivery platform for antimicrobial effectand bone repair at the same time for osteomyelitis disease treatment
