Thesis (Doctoral)--Izmir Institute of Technology, City and Regional Planning, Izmir, 2007Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 161-178)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxi, 178 leavesWithin the context of the economic valuation of open space, the aim of this study was to understand the impact of pedestrian ways as a public open space on rental price of residential properties. With this aim, the study also searched suitable variables to determine the factors affecting this impact. The study involved a two stage procedure as theoretical analysis and empirical analysis. In the first stage, fundamental concepts and approaches were evaluated by reviewing related literatures of urban design and environmental economics disciplines. In the second stage, to analyze the impact of pedestrian way attributes on rental price of residential properties, an empirical analysis was carried out by employing Hedonic Price Method (HPM) which is basically a regression analysis estimating the effect of each relevant variable on the price of the asset in question. The analysis was realized with a sample of 140 observations in the case of Forbes Pedestrian Way, which is called as .Sevgi Yolu. (Way of Romance), in İzmir. The study has put forward that pedestrian way as a public open space has a relative measurable economic value like other public open spaces; it impacts the rental price of residential properties. Regression analysis results have shown that, proximity to the pedestrian way and level of perceived quality of pedestrian way are significant determinants of rental prices of the residential properties. Consequently, the approach developed in this study has advanced the knowledge about open space valuation and provided the first evidence -in Turkey as well as in the world wide- of the impacts of pedestrian way on residential property.s rental prices. The case of Forbes Pedestrian Way has shown that pedestrian way is desirable and valuable from a housing-market perspective. This evidence has also supported previous researches reporting open space provides a premium for property prices. Besides, Hedonic Price Method is promising in measuring the impact of pedestrian ways on residential property rental prices. (Un)tolerated Neighbour: Encounters with the Radicalized Other in The Reluctant Fundamentalist and The Submission

    Get PDF
After the 9/11 attacks and events of its aftermath, discourses on respect for otherness and liberal tolerance are highly undercut by raising voices that are getting alarmingly close to fascism. However, while the concept of the Other is thus radicalized, it paradoxically gets so opaque that encountering it at a mundane level becomes almost impossible. It is equally difficult for the subject, that considers its self as liberal, and the “tolerated” Other to place themselves within the shifting parameters. Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Amy Waldman’s The Submission employ aesthetic tools to expose the intricate layers inherent in this paradox revealing the impossibility of a liberal discourse of tolerance in emerging representations of both self and the other after 9/11. In an attempt to understand the underlying implications of this change, this essay utilizes Slavoj Žižek’s concept of the Neighbour as well as Judith Butler’s ideas on grief to point out how aesthetic engagements with the world of the radicalized Other may provide critique of the current condition. And in the process, this study seeks an alternative to the discourse of tolerance

    Heat Transfer of Ferrofluids

Magnetic field‐responsive materials are an important group of smart materials. They can adaptively change their physical properties due to external magnetic field. Magnetic liquids or ferrofluids are colloidal systems of ferro or ferrimagnetic single domain nanoparticles that are dispersed either in aqueous or in organic liquids. Currently, the research field is undergoing a transition taking into account the bulk forces in fluids, which are magnetically nonuniform. These researches enable scientists to develop promising new designs. Today, because of the advancement in technology and limited energy sources, engineering innovations are focused on development of alternative resources instead of current systems. In this chapter, it is aimed to give a brief review of the heat transfer of magnetic fluids based on different types of magnetic nanoparticles as well as some of the research and results of the heat transfer of magnetite‐based ferrofluids. The heat transfer of these materials was investigated under stationary conditions, and the heat transfer coefficient was calculated

Anahtar Kelimeler: Girdi-temelli Öğretim Yöntemi, Metinsel Girdi Geliştirme Alıştırmaları, Yapılandırılmış Girdi Alıştırmaları, Çocuklara Yabancı Dil ÖğretimiThis quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of two different types of input-based instructions, namely Textual Enhancement (TE) and Processing Instruction (PI) on the acquisition of English Simple Present Tense third person singular form (–s). To this end, elementary level young learners (n = 43) learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) were employed for the study, and then randomly distributed into two experimental groups as TE and PI groups. Each group received its own specific instruction for two regular classroom hours: the TE group received textual enhancement; the PI group received processing instruction. The groups were assessed within a pretest, an immediate posttest and a delayed posttest design. The assessment materials included one interpretation task (grammaticality judgment task) and two production tasks (form correction and written production tasks). All the instructional and assessment materials used in the study were piloted twice on a similar group of students prior to the main study to check the difficulty level of the instructional materials, the reliability of the tests and the clarity of the instruction. The overall findings showed that both TE and PI groups improved their performance on the interpretation-level task; however, they failed to improve their performance on the production-level tasks. This research aims to explore the relations between social justice leadership, sense of school belonging, and student resilience. The research was conducted with 549 high school students. The data was collected through the social justice leadership scale, the psychological sense of school membership scale, and student resilience scale. The research tested the mediator role of sense of school belonging in the relationship between social justice leadership and student resilience. The findings showed that sense of belonging has a full mediator role; in other words, social justice leadership improves student resilience by increasing the sense of school belonging. In this context, a school leader who wants to increase the academic and social resilience of the students should carefully consider all harmful effects caused by social differences at school and improve the quality of school life. School leaders also should involve students in their decision-making processes and provide students with a critical consciousness that can criticize and challenge discriminatory and oppressive practices. Generally, school leaders should contribute to the development of student resilience by improving students’ school context in all aspects
