    Approaches to Energy Efficiency in Air conditioning: Innovative processes and thermodynamics

    Air conditioning in buildings has transformed our human lives greatly with work efficiency in commercial buildings and improved lifestyle in all weather. However, these improvements are accompanied with the negative effects from the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), both directly via refrigerant emissions and indirectly through electricity generation by the burning of fossil fuels. Although there were significant improvements in the efficacy of chillers since 2000, the kW/Ron of chillers for cooling for electrically driven DCS have reached an asymptotic level of 0.85±0.03 kW/Rton for the tropics and a 20% higher for the hot and dry arid climate. The levelling-off phenomenon of chillers' energy efficiency is attributed the improvements limits exploited from the efficacy of compressor and refrigerant technologies. Thus, an out-of-box solution, such as the decoupling of latent to sensible cooling in the dehumidification cum the indirect evaporative coolers (DH-IEC) to improve energy efficiency, It is projected that a quantum jump of 0.5 kWh/m3 or less is urgently needed for future sustainable cooling. In this paper, we adopted a top-down approach in evaluating the upper-bound energy savings of an economy if one were to employ the innovative DH-IEC cycle is assumed to be applied to the Singapore city state is highlighted with respect to the savings in the primary energy, emission of CO2 and the water savings of up to 40 % can be potentially achieved

    An innovative pressure swing adsorption cycle

    Over the last century, fresh water and cooling demand have been increased tremendously due to improved living standard, industrial and economic development. The conventional air-conditioning and refrigeration processes consume 15% of total global electricity and it is expected to increase any fold due to harsh weather conditions. In terms of fresh water supplies, the current 38 billion m3 per year desalination capacity is projected to increase to 54 billion m3 per year by 2030, 40% more compared to 2016. The current business as usual trend of cooling and desalination is not sustainable due to high energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In contrast, the adsorption (AD) cycle operate at low-grade waste heat or renewable energy and produce fresh water and cooling simultaneously. The major bottleneck of conventional thermally driven AD cycle is its large foot print and capital cost due to complex packed bed arrangements. We proposed pressure swing adsorption cycle (PSAD) that can utilize low-pressure steam (2-5 bar) for regeneration using thermal vapor compressor (TVC). The proposed system has best thermodynamic synergy with CCGT plants where low-pressure bleed steam can be utilized more efficiently to produce cooling and water. In this paper, a preliminary experimental investigation on PSAD has been presented. It is successfully demonstrated that 2 bar primary steam can regenerate silica gel at less then 0.5 kPa through TVC with compression ratio 3-4 and entrainment ratio around 1-1.5. The discharge steam can be re-utilized to operate the desalination cycle, maximizing the bleed steam exergy. The proposed system will not only reduce footprint but also CAPEX and OPEX due to simple design and operation

    Korean Version of the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score Questionnaire: Translation and Linguistic Validation

    PurposeThe overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS) consists of 4 questions regarding OAB symptoms. The aim of this study was to develop Korean version of the OABSS from the original Japanese version, with subsequent linguistic validation.MethodsBetween February and May 2008, the translation and linguistic validation process was performed as follows: a forward translation, reconciliation, backward translation, cognitive debriefing, and final proofreading.ResultsA forward translation from the original version of the OABSS to the Korean language was carried out by 2 native Korean speakers, who were also fluent in Japanese. Reconciliation was made after review of both translations by a panel consisting of both translators and one of the authors. Another bilingual translator who had never seen the original version of the OABSS carried out a translation of the reconciled version back into Japanese, and the original and backward-translated versions were subsequently compared. After discussion of all discrepancies between both versions by the panel, a second Korean version was produced. During cognitive debriefing, 5 outpatients with OAB reported that each question of the Korean version was significant and appropriate for their symptoms. However, 2 patients said that some parts of the questions or instructions were not clear or were not easy to understand. According to the cognitive debriefing, some words and phrases were revised into more understandable expressions.ConclusionsA Korean version of the OABSS was developed and linguistic validation was performed. Further studies are needed to assess the reproducibility and validity of the questionnaire in Korean populations

    Lifespan extension and increased resistance to environmental stressors by N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine in Caenorhabditis elegans

    OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, a modified sulfur-containing amino acid that acts as a strong cellular antioxidant, on the response to environmental stressors and on aging in C. elegans. METHOD: The survival of worms under oxidative stress conditions induced by paraquat was evaluated with and without in vivo N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment. The effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine on the response to other environmental stressors, including heat stress and ultraviolet irradiation (UV), was also monitored. To investigate the effect on aging, we examined changes in lifespan, fertility, and expression of age-related biomarkers in C. elegans after N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment. RESULTS: Dietary N-acetyl-L-cysteine supplementation significantly increased resistance to oxidative stress, heat stress, and UV irradiation in C. elegans. In addition, N-acetyl-L-cysteine supplementation significantly extended both the mean and maximum lifespan of C. elegans. The mean lifespan was extended by up to 30.5% with 5 mM N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment, and the maximum lifespan was increased by 8 days. N-acetyl-L-cysteine supplementation also increased the total number of progeny produced and extended the gravid period of C. elegans. The green fluorescent protein reporter assay revealed that expression of the stress-responsive genes, sod-3 and hsp-16.2, increased significantly following N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment. CONCLUSION: N-acetyl-L-cysteine supplementation confers a longevity phenotype in C. elegans, possibly through increased resistance to environmental stressors

    Quantization of virtual Grothendieck rings and their structure including quantum cluster algebras

    The quantum Grothendieck ring of a certain category of finite-dimensional modules over a quantum loop algebra associated with a complex finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g} has a quantum cluster algebra structure of skew-symmetric type. Partly motivated by a search of a ring corresponding to a quantum cluster algebra of {\em skew-symmetrizable} type, the quantum {\em virtual} Grothendieck ring, denoted by Kq(g)\mathfrak{K}_q(\mathfrak{g}), is recently introduced by Kashiwara--Oh \cite{KO23} as a subring of the quantum torus based on the (q,t)(q,t)-Cartan matrix specialized at q=1q=1. In this paper, we prove that Kq(g)\mathfrak{K}_q(\mathfrak{g}) indeed has a quantum cluster algebra structure of skew-symmetrizable type. This task essentially involves constructing distinguished bases of Kq(g)\mathfrak{K}_q(\mathfrak{g}) that will be used to make cluster variables and generalizing the quantum TT-system associated with Kirillov--Reshetikhin modules to establish a quantum exchange relation of cluster variables. Furthermore, these distinguished bases naturally fit into the paradigm of Kazhdan--Lusztig theory and our study of these bases leads to some conjectures on quantum positivity and qq-commutativity

    miRNA regulation of cytotoxic effects in mouse Sertoli cells exposed to nonylphenol

    Background: It is known that some environmental chemicals affect the human endocrine system. The harmful effects of endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) nonylphenol (NP) have been studied since the 1980s. It is known that NP adversely affects physiological functions by mimicking the natural hormone 17 beta-estradiol. In the present study, we analyzed the expression of miRNAs and their target genes in mouse Sertoli TM4 cells to better understand the regulatory roles of miRNAs on Sertoli cells after NP exposure. Methods: Mouse TM4 Sertoli cells were treated with NP for 3 or 24 h, and global gene and miRNA expression were analyzed using Agilent mouse whole genome and mouse miRNA v13 arrays. Results: We identified genes that were > 2-fold differentially expressed in NP-treated cells and control cells (P < 0.05) and analyzed their functions through Gene Ontology analysis. We also identified miRNAs that were differentially expressed in NP-treated and control cells. Of the 186 miRNAs the expression of which differed between NP-treated and control cells, 59 and 147 miRNAs exhibited 1.3-fold increased or decreased expression at 3 and 24 h, respectively. Network analysis of deregulated miRNAs suggested that Ppara may regulate the expression of certain miRNAs, including miR-378, miR-125a-3p miR-20a, miR-203, and miR-101a, after exposure to NP. Additionally, comprehensive analysis of predicted target genes for miRNAs showed that the expression of genes with roles in cell proliferation, the cell cycle, and cell death were regulated by miRNA in NP-treated TM4 cells. Levels of expression of the miRNAs miR-135a* and miR-199a-5p were validated by qRT-PCR. Finally, miR-135a* target gene analysis suggests that the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) following exposure to NP exposure may be mediated by miR-135a* through regulation of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. Conclusions: Collectively, these data help to determine NP's actions on mouse TM4 Sertoli cells and increase our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of xenoestrogens on the reproductive system.This work was supported an Eco-Technopia 21 project grant from the Ministry of Environment (Development of Decision Method of Chromosomal Abnormality in Reproductive System by Toxic Substances at the Korea Institute of Toxicology)
