A New Microdetermination of Bismuth and Mercury by the Extraction of Their Iodides with Organic Solvent

    Get PDF
Microdetermination of bismuth and mercury in the range of a few gammas was found to be possible by extraction of the respective iodide complex salts from acid solution with an organic solvent (isoamyl alcohol or mixture of this alcohol and ethyl acetate) and measuring the absorbance of the solvent extract in the ultraviolet region. The absorption maximum of bismuth iodide complex salt was found in the region of 330 mμ, and that of mercury compound in the region of 303 mμ. Optimal conditions for these analytical procedures and effects of coexistent elements were also studied

Studies on the Determination of Selenium and Tellurium. III

application/pdfThe gravimetric determination of selenium and tellurium were studied. Selenium was determined successfully by reducing it to metallic state with the lower valence titanium, molybdenum and chromium ions reduced with liquid zinc amalgam under the suitable conditions. By the same procedure, tellurium was determined successfully only with chromium, and with titanium and molybdenum, any available procedure has not been found.紀要類(bulletin)406841 bytesdepartmental bulletin pape

Gender differences in HIV testing service visits and its related factors among adults: a cross-sectional study in Homa Bay, Kenya

Introduction: at least 90% of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were expected to know their HIV status by 2020. However, only 84% are aware of their status. This study determined the frequency of HIV testing services visits (HTS) and its related factors to HTS visits among adults in Homa Bay County, Kenya. Methods: this was a cross-sectional study. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected. A backward stepwise logistic regression analysis was conducted for quantitative data by gender. Qualitative data were thematically categorised into factors of HTS visits by gender. Results: a total of 645 adults participated in quantitative survey and 17 in qualitative survey. There were no gender differences in the frequency of HTS visits (males=56.3%; females= 58.7%, P=0.785). The frequency of visits was however significantly different between the rural-based (Rachuonyo North=87.5%; Ndhiwa=58.7%) and urban-based (Homa Bay Town=36.8%) facilities at P<0.001. In males, HTS visits were positively associated with ´being in Protestant church´, ´partner´s attitude´, and ´being accompanied by a friend to HTS´. ´Distance to HTS´ was negatively associated with HTS visits in males. For females, 'sexual intercourse in the past 2-5 months´ was positively associated with HTS visits. ´Being in a polygamous marriage´, ´not married´, ´community HIV testing´, and ´affordability of transport cost to HTS centre´ were negatively associated with HTS visits. Conclusion: there were no gender differences in the frequency of HTS visits. Social position for males and position in the family for females are suggested as the factors influencing HTS visits in Homa Bay County

Transcriptional factors associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition in choroidal neovascularization

Purpose: To investigate the transcriptional factors associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: Paraffin sections of CNV obtained from patients with AMD (n=12) were stained for transcriptional factors related to EMT, i.e., Snail, Slug, SIP1, and Twist. As a control, postmortem sections of ocular normal tissue were used. Furthermore, using a human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell line (ARPE-19), reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) and immunofluorescence microscopy were performed to explore the cellular localization and expression levels of EMT-associated transcriptional factors upon cytokine stimulation. Results: Of 12 specimens, 11 CNV tissues (91.6%) showed staining for Snail localized in cellular nuclei, particularly in those of RPE cells. Snail was strongly co-localized with α-smooth muscle antigen (SMA) in RPE cells. In contrast, postmortem human retina showed no Snail staining in RPE cells. Other transcriptional factors, Slug, Twist and SIP1 were not detected in CNV or normal human retina. In ARPE-19 cells, RT–PCR and immunofluorescence microscopy showed that Snail mRNA was upregulated by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and VEGF stimulation. Furthermore, TGF-β induced relocalization of Snail to the nucleus in RPE cells. Conclusions: The current data indicate that Snail is a major transcriptional factor for EMT changes of RPE cells in human CNV

Efforts of the Professional Development Program at Hiroshima University Towards Fostering Teachers as Continuous Learners : The Case of the Teaching Practice and Development Course

    Get PDF
In 2016, the Graduate School of Education at Hiroshima University established the Professional Development Program for Teachers and School Leaders which consists two courses: The Teaching Practice and Development Course and the School Management Course. Focusing on the former, this paper examines its achievements and problems in the first year to develop some perspectives of models for graduate education toward fostering teachers as continuous learners. We discuss from the following four points: a collaborative learning between teacher and non-teacher graduate students; an effective way to learn the basic skills; a circulation of theory and practice; a triumvirate and learning environment on the realization of them.
