Enhancement of the formation of ultracold Rb molecules due to resonant coupling
We have studied the effect of resonant electronic state coupling on the
formation of ultracold ground-state Rb. Ultracold Rb molecules
are formed by photoassociation (PA) to a coupled pair of states,
and , in the region below the
limit. Subsequent radiative decay produces high vibrational levels of the
ground state, . The population distribution of these state
vibrational levels is monitored by resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization
through the state. We find that the populations of vibrational
levels =112116 are far larger than can be accounted for by the
Franck-Condon factors for transitions with
the state treated as a single channel. Further, the
ground-state molecule population exhibits oscillatory behavior as the PA laser
is tuned through a succession of state vibrational levels. Both of
these effects are explained by a new calculation of transition amplitudes that
includes the resonant character of the spin-orbit coupling of the two
states. The resulting enhancement of more deeply bound ground-state molecule
formation will be useful for future experiments on ultracold molecules.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; corrected author lis
Evaluation of Mammalian and Intermediate Host Surveillance Methods for Detecting Schistosomiasis Reemergence in Southwest China
Schistosomiasis has reemerged in China in regions where it was previously controlled. As reductions in schistosomiasis, a water-born parasitic infection, prompt consideration of schistosomiasis elimination, surveillance strategies that can signal reemergence and prevent further lapses in control are needed. We examined the distribution of Schistosoma japonicum, the species that causes schistosomiasis in China, in 53 villages. The villages were located in regions of Sichuan province where schistosomiasis reemergence had been documented by public health authorities. We tested three key reservoirs, humans, cows and water buffalo, and freshwater snails for S. japonicum infection in an effort to identify high-risk populations and evaluate their ability to signal reemergence. Human and bovine infections were common, detected in 35 villages and 23 villages, respectively, but infected snails were rare, found in only one village. Two commonly used surveillance methods, hospital reports of acute schistosomiasis and surveys for S. japonicum-infected snails, grossly underestimated the number of villages where human infections were present. Schistosomiasis was widespread in the region we studied, highlighting the danger reemergence poses to disease elimination programs. Surveillance systems that monitor high-risk populations such as older adults or bovine owners should be considered to promote detection of reemergence
Inter-isotope determination of ultracold rubidium interactions from three high-precision experiments
Combining the measured binding energies of four of the most weakly bound
rovibrational levels of the Rb molecule with the results of two
other recent high-precision rubidium experiments, we obtain exceptionally
strong constraints on the atomic interaction parameters in a highly model
independent analysis. The comparison of Rb and Rb data, where the
two isotopes are related by a mass scaling procedure, plays a crucial role.
Using the consistent picture of the interactions that thus arises we are led to
predictions for scattering lengths, clock shifts, Feshbach resonance fields and
widths with an unprecedented level of accuracy. To demonstrate this, we predict
two Feshbach resonances in mixed-spin scattering channels at easily accessible
magnetic field strengths, which we expect to play a role in the damping of
coherent spin oscillations
Thermoelectric properties of lead chalcogenide core-shell nanostructures
We present the full thermoelectric characterization of nanostructured bulk
PbTe and PbTe-PbSe samples fabricated from colloidal core-shell nanoparticles
followed by spark plasma sintering. An unusually large thermopower is found in
both materials, and the possibility of energy filtering as opposed to grain
boundary scattering as an explanation is discussed. A decreased Debye
temperature and an increased molar specific heat are in accordance with recent
predictions for nanostructured materials. On the basis of these results we
propose suitable core-shell material combinations for future thermoelectric
materials of large electric conductivities in combination with an increased
thermopower by energy filtering.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Measuring velocity of sound with nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering
Nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is used to measure the projected
partial phonon density of states of materials. A relationship is derived
between the low-energy part of this frequency distribution function and the
sound velocity of materials. Our derivation is valid for harmonic solids with
Debye-like low-frequency dynamics. This method of sound velocity determination
is applied to elemental, composite, and impurity samples which are
representative of a wide variety of both crystalline and noncrystalline
materials. Advantages and limitations of this method are elucidated
Weakly coupled states on branching graphs
We consider a Schr\"odinger particle on a graph consisting of links
joined at a single point. Each link supports a real locally integrable
potential ; the self--adjointness is ensured by the type
boundary condition at the vertex. If all the links are semiinfinite and ideally
coupled, the potential decays as along each of them, is
non--repulsive in the mean and weak enough, the corresponding Schr\"odinger
operator has a single negative eigenvalue; we find its asymptotic behavior. We
also derive a bound on the number of bound states and explain how the
coupling constant may be interpreted in terms of a family of
squeezed potentials.Comment: LaTeX file, 7 pages, no figure
What happens when the inflaton stops during inflation
The spectrum of adiabatic density perturbation generated during inflation is
studied in the case the time derivative of an inflation-driving scalar field
(inflaton) vanishes at some time during inflation. It is shown that the
nondecaying mode of perturbation has a finite value even in this case and that
its amplitude is given by the standard formula with the time derivation of the
scalar field replaced by the potential gradient using the slow-roll equation
Study of relativistic bound states for scalar theories in Bethe-Salpeter and Dyson-Schwinger formalism
The Bethe-Salpeter equation for Wick-Cutkosky like models is solved in
dressed ladder approximation. The bare vertex truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger
equations for propagators is combined with the dressed ladder Bethe-Salpeter
equation for the scalar S-wave bound state amplitudes. With the help of
spectral representation the results are obtained directly in Minkowski space.
We give a new analytic formula for the resulting equation simplifying the
numerical treatment. The bare ladder approximation of Bethe-Salpeter equation
is compared with the one with dressed ladder. The elastic electromagnetic form
factors is calculated within the relativistic impulse approximation.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
