HICOD2000 - Integrated system for coding, protection and trading of earth observation products in JPEG2000

    Get PDF
This paper describes a system, called HICOD2000, derived from a project developed in collaboration between two Portuguese companies and the European Space Agency that exploited the possibilities offered by the emerging image encoding standard - JPEG2000 - and its applicability to Earth Observation Products. The work described on this paper has been completed and it's currently being integrated with ESA own systems and EO products portal. Other important characteristic of the system consists in the usage of a Digital Rights Management platform to control the access and usage of EO products coded in JPEG2000 format.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Using web-services to manage and control access to multimedia content

In a largely interconnected World, the Web-Services (WS) computing paradigm is gaining momentum. Most Web Services applications existing today are being developed in the E-Business or E-Commerce context, mainly for Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) [12]. This paper describes a distributed architecture that largely uses WS technology to control and manage the access to multimedia content and that represents the new and emerging market of Digital Rights Management (DRM). This architecture deploys some critical DRM elements, in a service-oriented architecture, such as device and user identification and authentication, content registration and protection, license representation and production and payment. This paper presents the conceptual architecture, referred to as OpenSDRM [3], and provides some technical details about its development and deployment.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Efficacy of Narrowband UVB vs. PUVA in Patients with Early-Stage Mycosis Fungoides

INTRODUCTION: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a non-Hodgkin's T-cell lymphoma of the skin that often begins as limited patches and plaques with slow progression to systemic involvement. Narrowband ultraviolet (UV) B therapy has been proven to be an effective short-term treatment modality for clearing patch-stage MF. The effect of psoralen plus long-wave ultraviolet A (PUVA) in the treatment of patch- and plaque-type MF has also been thoroughly documented. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of narrowband UVB and PUVA in patients with early-stage MF. METHODS: We analysed the response to treatment, relapse-free survival and irradiation dose in 114 patients with histologically confirmed early-stage MF (stage IA, IB and IIA). RESULTS: A total of 95 patients were treated with PUVA (83.3%) and 19 with narrowband UVB (16.7%). With PUVA, 59 patients (62.1%) had a complete response (CR), 24 (25.3%) had a partial response (PR) and 12 (12.6%) had a failed response. Narrowband UVB led to CR in 12 (68.4%) patients, PR in 5 (26.3%) patients and a failed response in 1 (5.3%) patient. There were no differences in terms of time to relapse between patients treated with PUVA and those treated with narrowband UVB (11.5 vs. 14.0 months respectively; P = 0.816). No major adverse reactions were attributed to the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that phototherapy is a safe, effective and well-tolerated, first-line therapy in patients with early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, with prolonged disease-free remissions being achieved. It suggests that narrowband UVB is at least as effective as PUVA for treatment of early-stage MF.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Digital object rights management: Interoperable client-side DRM middleware

    Get PDF
In a more and more interconnected world where the available bandwidths are increasing at a pace hard to imagine some time ago, multimedia e-content distribution over digital networks has become one of the biggest available services online. Powered not only by the network high availability but also by the emergence of new compression techniques and digital content consumer device, digital content is gaining momentum. However the same factors that power this emergence are also causing some problems, specially related with the digital content IPR management and protection. These problems are being handled employing DRM - Digital Rights Management technology which lack interoperability. This paper presents and discusses a solution that provides interoperability to DRM-protected content through the employment of a client-side DRM middleware layer. This middleware layer sits at the client-side of a broader DRM system (called DoRM) providing the necessary mechanisms to achieve interoperability between the different digital content rendering applications that the users possesses.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Navigation framework using visual landmarks and a GIS

    Get PDF
In an unfamiliar environment we spot and explore all available information which might guide us to a desired location. This largely unconscious processing is done by our trained sensory and cognitive systems. These recognise and memorise sets of landmarks which allow us to create a mental map of the environment, and this map enables us to navigate by exploiting very few but the most important landmarks stored in our memory. In this paper we present a route planning, localisation and navigation system which works in real time. It integrates a geographic information system of a building with visual landmarks for localising the user and for validating the navigation route. Although designed for visually impaired persons, the system can also be employed to assist or transport persons with reduced mobility in way finding in a complex building. © 2013 The Authors. JPEG2000 image compression and visualization for desktop and mobile clients

This paper presents an architecture for JPEG2000 image compression and distribution using a Digital Rights Management (DRM) platform in the context of the PIMHAI project. The proposed architecture, based on a client-server interaction, will allow the users to upload images in PCIDSK database (PIX) format using a web-application front-end, and to perform the lossless JPEG2000 compression of such images. The resulting JPEG2000 images are then protected using cryptographic techniques and its intellectual property rights are managed digitally. In the context of the PIMHAI project, the proposed architecture will allow the storage of smaller and cryptographically protected image files in the database. The user access rights enforcement will prevent the access to the images by non authorized users. Another important feature is the decreasing of the connection time in the mobile client, through the expensive and slower wireless channel, to access the images in the database.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
