Upper limit to in scalar-tensor gravity theories
In a previous paper (Serna & Alimi 1996), we have pointed out the existence
of some particular scalar-tensor gravity theories able to relax the
nucleosynthesis constraint on the cosmic baryonic density. In this paper, we
present an exhaustive study of primordial nucleosynthesis in the framework of
such theories taking into account the currently adopted observational
constraints. We show that a wide class of them allows for a baryonic density
very close to that needed for the universe closure. This class of theories
converges soon enough towards General Relativity and, hence, is compatible with
all solar-system and binary pulsar gravitational tests. In other words, we show
that primordial nucleosynthesis does not always impose a very stringent bound
on the baryon contribution to the density parameter.Comment: uuencoded tar-file containing 16 pages, latex with 5 figures,

Formal Scheduling Constraints for Time-Sensitive Networks
In recent years, the IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) task group
has been active standardizing time-sensitive capabilities for Ethernet networks
ranging from distributed clock synchronization and time-based ingress policing
to frame preemption, redundancy management, and scheduled traffic enhancements.
In particular the scheduled traffic enhancements defined in IEEE 802.1Qbv
together with the clock synchronization protocol open up the possibility to
schedule communication in distributed networks providing real-time guarantees.
In this paper we formalize the necessary constraints for creating
window-based IEEE~802.1Qbv Gate Control List schedules for Time-sensitive
Networks (TSN). The resulting schedules allow a greater flexibility in terms of
timing properties while still guaranteeing deterministic communication with
bounded jitter and end-to-end latency
Quasi-degenerate neutrinos and tri-bi-maximal mixing
We consider how, for quasi-degenerate neutrinos with tri-bi-maximal mixing at
a high-energy scale, the mixing angles are affected by radiative running from
high to low-energy scales in a supersymmetric theory. The limits on the
high-energy scale that follow from consistency with the observed mixing are
determined. We construct a model in which a non-Abelian discrete family
symmetry leads both to a quasi-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum and to near
tri-bi-maximal mixing.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Optimization techniques in respiratory control system models
One of the most complex physiological systems whose modeling is still an open study is the respiratory control system where different models have been proposed based on the criterion of minimizing the work of breathing (WOB). The aim of this study is twofold: to compare two known models of the respiratory control system which set the breathing pattern based on quantifying the respiratory work; and to assess the influence of using direct-search or evolutionary optimization algorithms on adjustment of model parameters. This study was carried out using experimental data from a group of healthy volunteers under CO2 incremental inhalation, which were used to adjust the model parameters and to evaluate how much the equations of WOB follow a real breathing pattern. This breathing pattern was characterized by the following variables: tidal volume, inspiratory and expiratory time duration and total minute ventilation. Different optimization algorithms were considered to determine the most appropriate model from physiological viewpoint. Algorithms were used for a double optimization: firstly, to minimize the WOB and secondly to adjust model parameters. The performance of optimization algorithms was also evaluated in terms of convergence rate, solution accuracy and precision. Results showed strong differences in the performance of optimization algorithms according to constraints and topological features of the function to be optimized. In breathing pattern optimization, the sequential quadratic programming technique (SQP) showed the best performance and convergence speed when respiratory work was low. In addition, SQP allowed to implement multiple non-linear constraints through mathematical expressions in the easiest way. Regarding parameter adjustment of the model to experimental data, the evolutionary strategy with covariance matrix and adaptation (CMA-ES) provided the best quality solutions with fast convergence and the best accuracy and precision in both models. CMAES reached the best adjustment because of its good performance on noise and multi-peaked fitness functions. Although one of the studied models has been much more commonly used to simulate respiratory response to CO2 inhalation, results showed that an alternative model has a more appropriate cost function to minimize WOB from a physiological viewpoint according to experimental data.Postprint (author's final draft
Refractive index of a transparent liquid measured with a concave mirror
This paper describes the spherical concave mirror method for measuring the
index of refraction of transparent liquids. We derived the refractive index
equation using Snell's law and the small-angle approximation. We also verified
the validity of this method using the traditional spherical mirror and
thin-lens Gaussian equations.Comment: IOPart, 8 pages, 4 figure
Comunicación corta. Rhizoctonia solani, agente causal de la muerte de plántulas de acelga en España
During September 2011, post-emergence damping off of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla L.) was observed in a greenhouse in Villa del Prado (Spain). About 20% of the seedlings showed damping off symptoms. Lesions were initially water soaked, dark brown necrosis of crown tissue, irregular in shape and sunken in appearance on large plants, causing the infected seedlings to collapse and eventually die. Rhizoctonia solani was isolated consistently from symptomatic plants. After morphological and molecular identification of the isolates, pathogenicity was tested by placing agar plugs of four isolates adjacent to the stem at the three or four true leaf stage. In inoculated plants, brown crown and stem necrosis occurred while control plants did not show disease symptoms. Pathogenicity using non-germinated seeds was also tested. All four isolates produced extensive damping off when inoculated on non-germinated seeds. To our knowledge, this is the first report of damping off of Swiss chard caused by R. solani in Europe.
