Reassessment of mid-Carboniferous glacial extent in southwestern Gondwana (Rio Blanco Basin, Argentina) inferred from paleo-mass transport of diamictites

    Get PDF
Late Paleozoic glacial diamictites occur in many localities in western Argentina, indicating that the region was strongly affected by glaciation during the mid-Carboniferous (late Serpukhovian–early Bashkirian). In most instances these diamictites are found in steeply walled paleovalley settings in the Andean Precordillera. This study presents new data from a locality north of the Precordillera that suggests an additional, distinct, volume of ice existed in the region during the Carboniferous. The glacigenic diamictites in the Rio Blanco Basin were ultimately emplaced as gravity flows, precluding inferences of paleo-ice volume. Fold nose orientation and soft-sediment groove orientations within the diamictites indicate that the deposits were emplaced from north to south, suggesting that glacial ice was most likely not sourced from the proto-Precordillera at this locality, requiring the need for another ice center to the north of the basin. Diamictite facies indicates that the sediment was initially supplied to the study area by a warm-based glacier.Fil: Gulbranson, Erik L.. University of California at Davis; Estados Unidos. This investigation corresponds with a quantitative approach; it had a secuencial and evidentiary scope. Its is a quasi experimental design, because we worked with two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The investigation looked for exercise an impact in the level of writing in students of a private university of Lima through the application of an experimental program. The sample was formed by 40 students of the faculty of Estudios Generales Ciencias in the semester 2017-II: 13 students belong to the experimental group and 27, to the control group. To evaluate the level of writing, this was applied a writing level measurement test at the beginning and at the end of the program. We conclude that the program “Redacta, cachimbo” is effective to significantly improve the performance at the writing level, in particular the content, lexicon and syntax dimensions, in university students.Tesi

Semi-Classical Mechanics in Phase Space: The Quantum Target of Minimal Strings

The target space Mp,qM_{p,q} of (p,q)(p,q) minimal strings is embedded into the phase space of an associated integrable classical mechanical model. This map is derived from the matrix model representation of minimal strings. Quantum effects on the target space are obtained from the semiclassical mechanics in phase space as described by the Wigner function. In the classical limit the target space is a fold catastrophe of the Wigner function that is smoothed out by quantum effects. Double scaling limit is obtained by resolving the singularity of the Wigner function. The quantization rules for backgrounds with ZZ branes are also derived.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

Geometric Transition as a Change of Polarization

Taking the results of hep-th/0702110 we study the Dijkgraaf-Vafa open/closed topological string duality by considering the wavefunction behavior of the partition function. We find that the geometric transition associated with the duality can be seen as a change of polarization.Comment: 20 page

A Comment on Quantum Distribution Functions and the OSV Conjecture

    Get PDF
Using the attractor mechanism and the relation between the quantization of H3(M)H^{3}(M) and topological strings on a Calabi Yau threefold MM we define a map from BPS black holes into coherent states. This map allows us to represent the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy as a quantum distribution function on the phase space H3(M)H^{3}(M). This distribution function is a mixed Husimi/anti-Husimi distribution corresponding to the different normal ordering prescriptions for the string coupling and deviations of the complex structure moduli. From the integral representation of this distribution function in terms of the Wigner distribution we recover the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa (OSV) conjecture in the region "at infinity" of the complex structure moduli space. The physical meaning of the OSV corrections are briefly discussed in this limit.Comment: 27 pages. v2:reference and footnote adde
