How close can one approach the Dirac point in graphene experimentally?
The above question is frequently asked by theorists who are interested in
graphene as a model system, especially in context of relativistic quantum
physics. We offer an experimental answer by describing electron transport in
suspended devices with carrier mobilities of several 10^6 cm^2V^-1s^-1 and with
the onset of Landau quantization occurring in fields below 5 mT. The observed
charge inhomogeneity is as low as \approx10^8 cm^-2, allowing a neutral state
with a few charge carriers per entire micron-scale device. Above liquid helium
temperatures, the electronic properties of such devices are intrinsic, being
governed by thermal excitations only. This yields that the Dirac point can be
approached within 1 meV, a limit currently set by the remaining charge
inhomogeneity. No sign of an insulating state is observed down to 1 K, which
establishes the upper limit on a possible bandgap

Genome Characterization of a Pathogenic Porcine Rotavirus B Strain Identified in Buryat Republic, Russia in 2015. Pathogens 2018, 7, 46.An outbreak of enteric disease of unknown etiology with 60% morbidity and 8% mortality in weaning piglets occurred in November 2015 on a farm in Buryat Republic, Russia. Metagenomic sequencing revealed the presence of rotavirus B in feces from diseased piglets while no other pathogens were identified. Clinical disease was reproduced in experimentally infected piglets, yielding the 11 RVB gene segments for strain Buryat15, with an RVB genotype constellation of G12-P[4]-I13-R4-C4-M4-A8-N10-T4-E4-H7. This genotype constellation has also been identified in the United States. While the Buryat15 VP7 protein lacked unique amino acid differences in the predicted neutralizing epitopes compared to the previously published swine RVB G12 strains, this report of RVB in Russian swine increases our epidemiological knowledge on the global prevalence and genetic diversity of RVB

Exchange interaction of electrons with Mn in hybrid AlSb/InAs/ZnMnTe structures
Diluted magnetic semiconductor heterovalent AlSb/InAs/ZnMnTe quantum well (QW) structures with an electron channel have been designed and grown applying molecular-beam epitaxy. The enhanced magnetic properties of QWs as a result of the exchange interaction with Mn2+ ions, are proved by measuring the microwave radiation induced spin polarized electric currents
Ni/(R2O3,CaO) Nanocomposites Produced by the Exsolution of R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 Nickelates (R = Nd, Sm, Eu): Rare Earth Effect on the Catalytic Performance in the Dry Reforming and Partial Oxidation of Methane
In order to clarify the role of R2O3 in the metal-oxide catalysts derived from complex oxide precursors, a series of R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 (R = Nd, Sm, Eu) complex oxides was obtained. A significant systematic increase in the orthorhombic distortion of the R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 structure (K2NiF4 type, Cmce) from Nd to Eu correlates with a corresponding decrease in their ionic radii. A reduction of R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 in the Ar/H2 gas mixture at 800 °C causes a formation of dense agglomerates of CaO and R2O3 coated with spherical 25–30 nm particles of Ni metal. The size of metal particles and oxide agglomerates is similar in all Ni/(R2O3,CaO) composites in the study. Their morphology is rather similar to the products of redox exsolution obtained by the partial reduction of complex oxides. All obtained composites demonstrated a significant catalytic activity in the dry reforming (DRM) and partial oxidation (POM) of methane at 700–800 °C. A systematic decrease in the DRM catalytic activity of composites from Nd to Eu could be attributed to the basicity reduction of R2O3 components of the composite catalysts. The maximum CH4 conversion in POM reaction was observed for Ni/(Sm2O3,CaO), while the maximum selectivity was demonstrated by Nd2O3-based composite. The possible reasons for the observed difference are discussed
XRD Evaluation of Wurtzite Phase in MBE Grown Self-Catalyzed GaP Nanowires
Control and analysis of the crystal phase in semiconductor nanowires are of high importance due to the new possibilities for strain and band gap engineering for advanced nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. In this letter, we report the growth of the self-catalyzed GaP nanowires with a high concentration of wurtzite phase by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) and investigate their crystallinity. Varying the growth temperature and V/III flux ratio, we obtained wurtzite polytype segments with thicknesses in the range from several tens to 500 nm, which demonstrates the high potential of the phase bandgap engineering with highly crystalline self-catalyzed phosphide nanowires. The formation of rotational twins and wurtzite polymorph in vertical nanowires was observed through complex approach based on transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and reciprocal space mapping. The phase composition, volume fraction of the crystalline phases, and wurtzite GaP lattice parameters were analyzed for the nanowires detached from the substrate. It is shown that the wurtzite phase formation occurs only in the vertically-oriented nanowires during vapor-liquid-solid growth, while the wurtzite phase is absent in GaP islands parasitically grown via the vapor-solid mechanism. The proposed approach can be used for the quantitative evaluation of the mean volume fraction of polytypic phase segments in heterostructured nanowires that are highly desirable for the optimization of growth technologies
Efficient Second-Harmonic Generation in Nanocrystalline Silicon Nanoparticles
Recent trends to
employ high-index dielectric particles in nanophotonics are motivated
by their reduced dissipative losses and large resonant enhancement
of nonlinear effects at the nanoscale. Because silicon is a centrosymmetric
material, the studies of nonlinear optical properties of silicon nanoparticles
have been targeting primarily the third-harmonic generation effects.
Here we demonstrate, both experimentally and theoretically, that resonantly
excited nanocrystalline silicon nanoparticles fabricated by an optimized
laser printing technique can exhibit strong second-harmonic generation
(SHG) effects. We attribute an unexpectedly high yield of the nonlinear
conversion to a nanocrystalline structure of nanoparticles supporting
the Mie resonances. The demonstrated efficient SHG at green light
from a single silicon nanoparticle is 2 orders of magnitude higher
than that from unstructured silicon films. This efficiency is significantly
higher than that of many plasmonic nanostructures and small silicon
nanoparticles in the visible range, and it can be useful for a design
of nonlinear nanoantennas and silicon-based integrated light sources
Structural and Optical Properties of Self-Catalyzed Axially Heterostructured GaPN/GaP Nanowires Embedded into a Flexible Silicone Membrane
Controlled growth of heterostructured nanowires and mechanisms of their formation have been actively studied during the last decades due to perspectives of their implementation. Here, we report on the self-catalyzed growth of axially heterostructured GaPN/GaP nanowires on Si(111) by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Nanowire composition and structural properties were examined by means of Raman microspectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. To study the optical properties of the synthesized nanoheterostructures, the nanowire array was embedded into the silicone rubber membrane and further released from the growth substrate. The reported approach allows us to study the nanowire optical properties avoiding the response from the parasitically grown island layer. Photoluminescence and Raman studies reveal different nitrogen content in nanowires and parasitic island layer. The effect is discussed in terms of the difference in vapor solid and vapor liquid solid growth mechanisms. Photoluminescence studies at low temperature (5K) demonstrate the transition to the quasi-direct gap in the nanowires typical for diluted nitrides with low N-content. The bright room temperature photoluminescent response demonstrates the potential application of nanowire/polymer matrix in flexible optoelectronic devices
Evaluation of the short-term efficacy and safety of biological agents in different rheumatic diseases: a multidisciplinary therapeutic hospital"s experience
There has been a substantial expansion in the possibilities of current therapy for rheumatic diseases (RD) primarily due to the use of genetically engineered biological agents (GEBA). Objective: to evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of GEBA in patients with different RD. Subjects and methods. The trial included all RD patients receiving GEBA: rituximab (RTM), infliximab (INF), adalimumab, etanercept, tocilizumab, abatacept in 2009-2012. Therapeutic efficiency and safety were evaluated 6 months later. The effect of GEBA was determined as âremissionâ, âimprovementâ, and âno responseâ, by using the parameters peculiar to specific diseases (such as BVAS, DAS28, BASDAI). Results. The trial enrolled 107 patients (49 men and 58 women; mean age 41.5 years) with rheumatoid arthritis (n=34), ANCA-associated vasculitis (n = 34), systemic lupus erythematosus (n=16), cryoglobulinemic vasculitis (n=11), ankylosing spondyloarthritis (n = 8), systemic vasculitis with large artery involvement (n=6), and other RD. All the cases showed severe systemic autoimmune disease refractory to standard immunosuppressive therapy. RTM (n=66) and INF (n = 31) were most frequently used. The high rate of RTM prescription was due to the fact that this drug was given to all patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and cryoglobulinemic vasculitis who totaled more than half of the patients included into the trial. The vast majority of them received GEBA for the first time. After the treatment, there was remission in 62 (57.9%) and improvement in 42 (39.3%) cases. Mild or moderate adverse reactions were observed in 22 (20.6%) patients and severe ones were seen in 6 (5.6%). Conclusion. GEBA therapy ensures a significant improvement in a substantial proportion of patients with different RD refractory to standard immunosuppressive therapy
