Effective one-band electron-phonon Hamiltonian for nickel perovskites
Inspired by recent experiments on the Sr-doped nickelates,
, we propose a minimal microscopic model capable to describe
the variety of the observed quasi-static charge/lattice modulations and the
resulting magnetic and electronic-transport anomalies. Analyzing the motion of
low-spin (s=1/2) holes in a high-spin (S=1) background as well as their their
coupling to the in-plane oxygen phonon modes, we construct a sort of
generalized Holstein t-J Hamiltonian for the planes, which contains
besides the rather complex ``composite-hole'' hopping part non-local spin-spin
and hole-phonon interaction terms.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Inelastic diffraction and color-singlet gluon-clusters in high-energy hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron collisions
It is proposed, that ``the colorless objects'' which manifest themselves in
large-rapidity-gap events are color-singlet gluon-clusters due to
self-organized criticality (SOC), and that optical-geometrical concepts and
methods are useful in examing the space-time properties of such objects. A
simple analytical expression for the -dependence of the inelastic single
diffractive cross section ( is the four-momentum transfer
squared) is derived. Comparison with the existing data and predictions for
future experiments are presented. The main differences and similarities between
the SOC-approach and the ``Partons in the Pomeron (Pomeron and
Reggeon)''-approach are discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Self-consistent solution for the polarized vacuum in a no-photon QED model
We study the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock model introduced by Chaix and Iracane
({\it J. Phys. B.}, 22, 3791--3814, 1989) which is a mean-field theory deduced
from no-photon QED. The associated functional is bounded from below. In the
presence of an external field, a minimizer, if it exists, is interpreted as the
polarized vacuum and it solves a self-consistent equation.
In a recent paper math-ph/0403005, we proved the convergence of the iterative
fixed-point scheme naturally associated with this equation to a global
minimizer of the BDF functional, under some restrictive conditions on the
external potential, the ultraviolet cut-off and the bare fine
structure constant . In the present work, we improve this result by
showing the existence of the minimizer by a variational method, for any cut-off
and without any constraint on the external field.
We also study the behaviour of the minimizer as goes to infinity
and show that the theory is "nullified" in that limit, as predicted first by
Landau: the vacuum totally kills the external potential. Therefore the limit
case of an infinite cut-off makes no sense both from a physical and
mathematical point of view.
Finally, we perform a charge and density renormalization scheme applying
simultaneously to all orders of the fine structure constant , on a

Three-body Faddeev Calculation for 11Li with Separable Potentials
The halo nucleus Li is treated as a three-body system consisting of an
inert core of Li plus two valence neutrons. The Faddeev equations are
solved using separable potentials to describe the two-body interactions,
corresponding in the n-Li subsystem to a p resonance plus a
virtual s-wave state. The experimental Li energy is taken as input and
the Li transverse momentum distribution in Li is studied.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 1 figur
Vacuum polarization calculations for hydrogenlike and alkalilike ions
Complete vacuum polarization calculations incorporating finite nuclear size
are presented for hydrogenic ions with principal quantum numbers n=1-5.
Lithiumlike, sodiumlike, and copperlike ions are also treated starting with
Kohn-Sham potentials, and including first-order screening corrections. In both
cases dominant Uehling terms are calculated with high accuracy, and smaller
Wichmann- Kroll terms are obtained using numerical electron Green's functions.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figur
Projectile fragmentation of 129Xe at Elab=790 AMeV
We have measured production yields and longitudinal momentum distributions of
projectile-like fragments in the reaction 129Xe + 27Al at an energy of Elab=790
AMeV. Production cross sections higher than expected from systematics were
observed for nuclei in the neutron-deficient tails of the isotopic
distributions. A comparison with previously measured data from the
fragmentation of 136Xe ions shows that the production yields strongly depend on
the neutron excess of the projectile with respect to the line of
beta-stability. The momentum distributions exhibit a dependence on the fragment
neutron-to-proton ratio in isobaric chains, which was not expected from
systematics so far. This can be interpreted by a higher excitation of the
projectile during the formation of neutron-deficient fragments.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Measurement of nuclide cross-sections of spallation residues in 1 A GeV 238U + proton collisions
The production of heavy nuclides from the spallation-evaporation reaction of
238U induced by 1 GeV protons was studied in inverse kinematics. The
evaporation residues from tungsten to uranium were identified in-flight in mass
and atomic number. Their production cross-sections and their momentum
distributions were determined. The data are compared with empirical
systematics. A comparison with previous results from the spallation of 208Pb
and 197Au reveals the strong influence of fission in the spallation of 238U.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, background information at

Role of the Nuclear and Electromagnetic Interactions in the Coherent Dissociation of the Relativistic Li Nucleus into the H + He Channel
The differential cross section in the transverse momentum and a total
cross section of mb for the coherent dissociation of a 3-A-GeV/
Li nucleus through the HHe channel have been measured on emulsion
nuclei. The observed dependence of the cross section is explained by the
predominant supposition of the nuclear diffraction patterns on light (C, N, O)
and heavy (Br, Ag) emulsion nuclei. The contributions to the cross section from
nuclear diffraction ( MeV/) and Coulomb MeV/)
dissociations are calculated to be 40.7 and 4 mb, respectively.Comment: ISSN 0021-3640, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 200
Dynamical description of the breakup of one-neutron halo nuclei 11Be and 19C
We investigate the breakup of the one-neutron halo nuclei 11Be and 19C within
a dynamical model of the continuum excitation of the projectile. The time
evolution of the projectile in coordinate space is described by solving the
three-dimensional time dependent Schroedinger equation, treating the
projectile-target (both Coulomb and nuclear) interaction as a time dependent
external perturbation. The pure Coulomb breakup dominates the relative energy
spectra of the fragments in the peak region, while the nuclear breakup is
important at higher relative energies. The coherent sum of the two
contributions provides a good overall description of the experimental spectra.
Cross sections of the first order perturbation theory are derived as a limit of
our dynamical model. The dynamical effects are found to be of the order of
10-15% for the beam energies in the range of 60 - 80 MeV/nucleon. A comparison
of our results with those of a post form distorted wave Born approximation
shows that the magnitudes of the higher order effects are dependent on the

Propagation of social representations
Based on a minimal formalism of social representations as a set of associated cognems, a simple model of propagation of representations is presented. Assuming that subjects share the constitutive cognems, the model proposes that mere focused attention on the set of cognems in the field of common conscience may replicate the pattern of representation from context into subjects, or, from subject to subject, through actualization by language, where cognems are represented by verbal signs. Limits of the model are discussed, and evolutionist perspectives are presented with the support of field data
