    Entanglement Typicality

    We provide a summary of both seminal and recent results on typical entanglement. By typical values of entanglement, we refer here to values of entanglement quantifiers that (given a reasonable measure on the manifold of states) appear with arbitrarily high probability for quantum systems of sufficiently high dimensionality. We work within the Haar measure framework for discrete quantum variables, where we report on results concerning the average von Neumann and linear entropies as well as arguments implying the typicality of such values in the asymptotic limit. We then proceed to discuss the generation of typical quantum states with random circuitry. Different phases of entanglement, and the connection between typical entanglement and thermodynamics are discussed. We also cover approaches to measures on the non-compact set of Gaussian states of continuous variable quantum systems.Comment: Review paper with two quotes and minimalist figure

    A compact high-flux source of cold sodium atoms

    We present a compact source of cold sodium atoms suitable for the production of quantum degenerate gases and versatile for a multi-species experiment. The magnetic field produced by permanent magnets allows to simultaneously realize a Zeeman slower and a two-dimensional MOT within an order of magnitude smaller length than standard sodium sources. We achieve an atomic flux exceeding 4x10^9 atoms/s loaded in a MOT, with a most probable longitudinal velocity of 20 m/s, and a brightness larger than 2.5x10^(12) atoms/s/sr. This atomic source allowed us to produce a pure BEC with more than 10^7 atoms and a background pressure limited lifetime of 5 minutes.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Seventeenth and eighteenth century timber roof structures in Scotland : design, pathologies and conservation

    17C and 18C Scottish built heritage has not been sufficiently researched, despite its importance in both quality and quantity. Most scholars tend to investigate the external architectural composition of these buildings rather than their overall constructional configuration. In particular, timber roof structures are very rarely considered even though the integrity of the overall building depends largely on them. This lack of knowledge hinders good conservation practice. This paper aims to increase awareness about the extent, nature, value and condition of historic timber roofs in Scotland in order to understand what their conservation needs are. Preliminary results obtained from the creation of a relational database of 1520 buildings, related mapping, survey of 56 buildings of the period across Scotland and historical/archival research, are discussed. This has allowed for an initial understanding of the different structural types of Scottish timber roofs of the period as well as their pathologies
