Verticillium wilt caused by the fungus Verticillium dahliae Kleb. leads to decrease in the yield and quality of eggplant, an economically important vegetable in Turkey. To develop eggplant lines that are resistant to or tolerant to verticillium wilt, this study used cultivars K-1, K-2, K-3, K-4, K-5, K-6, K-7 and K-8 in the studies presented here. The wild species Solanum torvum and Solanum sodemeum; the resistant cultivated forms DK-1, DK-2, DK-3, DK-4 and DK-6; and the cultivar DK-5 were also included in the study. For the pathogenicity tests, an isolate of V. dahliae used was identified by PCR at the Plant Protection Department of the Faculty of Agriculture, A. Menderes University. All the plant materials were tested with this isolate in 2004 and again in 2005. Results from the two years were similar; the lowest disease ratio was obtained from the DK-5 line in both years. F1 plants were obtained through hybridisation of cultivar K-1 and line DK-5, which were determined to be respectively susceptible and tolerant to V. dahliae. Next, F2 plants were obtained by selfing F1. In 2006, cultivar K-1, line DK-5, and F1 and F2 plants underwent pathogenicity tests. At the end of the pathogenity test, the disease  severity in cultivar K-1 and line DK-5 was similar to that seen in previous years, whereas the yellowing and wilting values of F1 plant leaves, as well as stem isolation and reisolation results, were higher than those of F2 plants. Using a 0 to 5 scale and considering the yellowing area on leaves, the disease severity in F1 plants was determined to be 38%; the severity value ranged from 2 to 6% in 55% of 200 F1 plants and from 36 to 44% in the remaining 45%.Key words: Solanum melongena, Verticillium dahliae, resistance, hybridisation

Genotypic variation in the response of tomato to salinity

In order to determine the predictive screening parameters that can be applied at early development stages of tomato plants, 18 tomato cultivars were grown in nutrient solution with 12 dS m-1 NaCl. Theresearch was conducted in a completely randomized design with tree replications. The relationships among the salinity and root, stem, leaf accumulation, K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratios and root-stem-leaf dryweights were investigated. At the end of treatment, regarding studied parameters morphologic and physiologic changes were determined depending on increasing NaCl concentrations. With increasingconcentrations, it was determined that all growth parameters were decreased. However, this decrease in salt tolerant cultivars was restricted as compared to salt sensitive cultivars. It was also determined that by increasing NaCl applications, the amount of Na+ was increased and, the amount of Ca2+ and K+ ions were decreased in salt tolerant cultivars same with growth parameters. Thus, it was concluded that, more K+ or Ca2+ absorbing plant with high K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ rations were more salt tolerant. At end of the study, it was determined that dry weights and K/Na+- Ca2+/Na+ ratios were very effective on the salt tolerance. Considering the cultivars, H-2710 was characterized as more salt tolerant under saline conditions

The role of family cohesion in the psychological adjustment of non-Hispanic White and Hispanic mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder

•We compare cultural differences in the role of family functioning.•We examine the role of family functioning in mental health outcomes.•The role of family functioning depends on ethnicity. The current study utilizes a process-oriented approach to understand both personal and family factors influencing the development of depressive symptoms among non-Hispanic White and Hispanic mothers of children with ASD. Family cohesion was hypothesized to mediate the associations between the personal factors (optimism, benefit finding, social support) and depressive symptoms. Mothers of 117 children with ASD (Hispanic n=73; non-Hispanic White n=44) completed measures of depressive symptoms, family cohesion, social support, optimism, and benefit finding. Results from this study indicate that optimism, benefit finding, and social support are important predictors of positive maternal adjustment. Furthermore, these factors contribute to better family functioning, namely family cohesion. The mediation models containing optimism, benefit finding, partner and family support were significant for both Hispanic and non-Hispanic White mothers, suggesting a similar mediation process for both racial/ethnic groups. However, family cohesion was a significant mediator of the relationship between friend support and depressive symptoms for Hispanic mothers only. The results of this study complement and extend previous research examining family functioning among mothers of children with ASD and have implications for the development of interventions aimed at increasing maternal well-being

Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis after Pneumococcal pneumonia in an Elderly Adult

Hypersensitivity vasculitis (HSV) has been used to describe several forms of vasculitis of small blood vessels, including Henoch-Sch?nlein purpura (HSP), mixed cryoglobulinemia, and allergic vasculitis, etc. HSP is a disease occasionally seen in childhood, and is characterized by dermatological and abdominal symptoms. Here, we report a rare case of HSV which showed a clinical course similar to HSP after pneumococcal pneumonia in an elderly adult. Generally, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common pathogen in adult community-acquired pneumonia. Therefore, it is critical to recognize HSV as one of the important complications after bacterial infection, especially Streptococcus pneumoniae
