    Ash Vaporization and Condensation During Combustion of a Suspended Coal Particle

    The results of a theoretical study of the formation and growth of the submicron flyash aerosol around a single burning coal particle are presented. The vaporization of ash and subsequent aerosol formation near the coal particle are studied because the local combustion environment influences these processes strongly. A mathematical model is developed that describes the transport of ash vapor and and the growth of the aerosol. The ash aerosol calculation is superimposed on an existing solution to the combustion problem. Included in the model are the effects of convective transport and of both homogeneous and heterogeneous condensation of the ash vapor. The results of the calculations show that refractory compounds with low surface tension, like silica, nucleate very near the coal particle's surface and produce a substantial mass loading of aerosol. The presence of the aerosol does not greatly affect the ash vaporization rate, which is primarily a function of combustion conditions. The size and amount of the submicron ash aerosol are determined by both the local combustion conditions and the ash's physical properties

    Exploring young child feeding practices and perceptions in Tower Hamlets, with a focus on sugar World Nutrition

    Introduction: The aim of this qualitative research was to gain a greater understanding of the factors that influence young child feeding perceptions and practices in families with children under the age of five years old in London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in the context of rising childhood obesity levels in England. Methodology: The target group were mothers with children under five, mother in laws, service providers and carers. The participants were selected using purposeful, convenience and snowball sampling methods. Data were collected from 21 key informant interviews, 2 direct observations of health promotion sessions and 18 focus groups. The focus group discussions included 119 participants: 95 women who were mothers, 3 mother in laws and 21 service providers. A thematic analysis was used to identify four themes: knowledge not leading to changes, communication challenges, barriers to improving family healthy eating practices, and the lack of public health nutrition services. Findings: Knowledge had not led to behaviour change: Participants demonstrated high levels of knowledge on what constitutes healthy eating such as increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables their children eat while reducing sugar, salt and fat intake. Information was sought mainly from the internet, friends and family, but participants would prefer a one-to-one session with a health worker. Communication challenges: Misleading messages negatively affected food choices. Participants raised the problem of mixed messages regarding what was a healthy snack, as many food labels targeting young children carry misleading health claims such as “two of your five a day” or “organic,” despite having extremely high levels of sugar. Barriers to improving family healthy eating practices: The challenges experienced when trying to improve their children’s eating habits included the cost of healthy food options, the lack of time to buy and prepare healthy options, unhealthy treats given by family and friends, and the unhealthy takeaway food environment. Lack of public health nutrition services and support: There was a lack of clarity regarding who mothers and service providers should refer to regarding nutrition problems such as fussy eating, portion sizes, and diet diversity. Half of the early years’ service providers that were interviewed had no training on healthy eating guidelines, although training had been planned. Parents did not think the sugar tax would have a significant impact on the consumption of sugar or on childhood obesity levels

    Reporting radiographers in Europe survey: Support, role satisfaction, and advanced clinical practice within the European federation of radiographer society (EFRS) member countries.

    Increasing number of radiographers are undertaking image reporting throughout Europe. However, there are variations in practice and experience in European countries. The study aim was to investigate reporting radiographer's perceptions in relation to support for their role and workload satisfaction and elements of advanced practice that may also be undertaken. Following institutional ethical approval an online 34 item questionnaire survey was circulated via social media; Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn in a 12-week period in 2022 across Europe. The survey data were managed by the online secure database REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture). Data was collected across a range of questions, of which those relating to support for, and barriers to radiographer reporting, role and job satisfaction, and other role elements are reported here. A response level of 345 individual reporting radiographers replied to the survey from 15 European countries; some questions were optional and therefore had a lower response rate. There was consensus about the need for support from radiologists and management, protected time, and funding to support the reporting role. The majority of respondents received additional pay for taking on this role and expressed satisfaction with their role and workload. In relation to elements of advanced practice, the majority of respondents were involved in educational and managerial activities, and there was interest, but limited involvement, in research. There was a consensus about the support needed, and perceived barriers to, radiographer reporting, between reporting radiographers from different countries. Whilst there is some commonality in relation to activities such as supervision and education, there was clearer variety in relation to opportunities for research between the respondents, perhaps reflecting the differences between reporting as a standalone role development and reporting as part of an advanced clinical practice role. As there is increasingly an emphasis on advanced clinical practice, reporting radiographers are likely to require support to develop their skills so that they can actively participate in the broader activities associated with this role, including education, leadership, and research.     Aortic intervention guided by contrast-enhanced transoesophageal ultrasound while waiting for cardiac transplantation: a case report

    Background: Aortic complications can occur during left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) insertion and its treatment remains challenging. Percutaneous aortic interventions can be an alternative to surgery in such high-risk cases. Case summary: We present a patient with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and advanced heart failure requiring LVAD insertion as a bridge to transplant, who developed an aortic pseudoaneurysm below the anastomosis of the LVAD tube. He was treated by percutaneously coiling under contrast-enhanced transoesophageal echocardiographic (TOE) guidance and safely reached destination (heart transplantation) a year later. Discussion: LVADs provide haemodynamic support for patients with advanced heart failure waiting for heart transplantation. Although uncommon, aortic complications can develop after LVAD insertion and are life-threatening. Percutaneous aortic interventions are feasible in such cases to promote thrombosis and shrinkage of aneurysmal spaces, hence potentially reducing the risk of sudden death. Contrast-enhanced TOE can be easily and safely used to both monitor the intervention by improving anatomic target definition, guide and wire positioning, and assess early results

    In this editorial, the authors respond to the 2011 article in the Journal of Management by Becker, Cropanzano, and Sanfey, titled “Organizational Neuroscience: Taking Organizational Theory Inside the Neural Black Box.” More specifically, the authors build on the ideas of Becker et al. first to clarify and extend their work and then to explore the critical philosophical issues involved in drawing inferences from neuroscientific research. They argue that these problems are yet to be solved and that organizational researchers who wish to incorporate neuroscientific advances into their work need to engage with them

    Radiographer-led reporting originated in the United Kingdom as a strategy to reduce reporting backlog and time taken to report images. The effectiveness of reporting radiographers has been demonstrated, but their motivational factors have not been thoroughly explored. This survey aims to understand the incentives for radiographers to pursue postgraduate education in reporting radiography across Europe. An online survey was conducted, collecting data across a range of topics such as demographic information, professional role, and job satisfaction. Questions assessing the influence of motivational factors on the decision to become a reporting radiographer are presented in this study. Descriptive statistics characterized the respondents' demographics. The motivational aspects were analysed quantitatively by regression analyses. Thematic analyses were performed for the free text responses on motivational aspects. 239 respondents from the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands, Ireland, and Malta completed the survey's motivation section. Increased knowledge and new challenges were the most motivating factors for becoming a reporting radiographer, while less exposure to radiation and less patient contact were the least motivating factors. Job satisfaction was a significant motivator. Gender significantly correlated with the importance of social connections for female reporting radiographers. A cross-country comparison showed that title and position and job security were more important for reporting radiographers from the UK. Taking in consideration that a sample of 239 is not generalisable for the role, this survey does provides insights into the motivation behind being a reporting radiographer in Europe. Factors such as increased knowledge, new challenges, and job satisfaction play significant roles. Hindrances experienced by reporting radiographers included lack of time, support, and standards, while aspirations for further professional development were expressed. A thorough understanding of the motivation behind pursuing postgraduate studies in reporting radiography is a valuable tool for managers, aiding in fostering a positive work environment and attracting/keeping qualified personnel. The findings of this study can be employed in the development of strategies to support and enhance the practice of reporting radiographers. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2024 The Authors.     Effect of dead space on avalanche speed

    The effects of dead space (the minimum distance travelled by a carrier before acquiring enough energy to impact ionize) on the current impulse response and bandwidth of an avalanche multiplication process are obtained from a numerical model that maintains a constant carrier velocity but allows for a random distribution of impact ionization path lengths. The results show that the main mechanism responsible for the increase in response time with dead space is the increase in the number of carrier groups, which qualitatively describes the length of multiplication chains. When the dead space is negligible, the bandwidth follows the behavior predicted by Emmons but decreases as dead space increase

    In this critical essay, we respond to Lindebaum’s (2016) argument that neuroscientific methodologies and data have been accepted prematurely in proposing novel management theory. We acknowledge that building new management theories requires firm foundations. We also find his distinction between demand and supply side forces helpful as an analytical framework identifying the momentum for the contemporary production of management theory. Nevertheless, some of the arguments Lindebaum (2016) puts forward, on closer inspection, can be contested, especially those related to the supply side of organizational cognitive neuroscience (OCN) research: fMRI data, motherhood statements and ethical concerns. We put forward a more positive case for OCN methodologies and data, as well as clarifying exactly what OCN really means, and its consequences for the development of strong management theory
