    Screw Connection Systems in Timber-Concrete Composite Structures: A Literature Review

    This paper reviews the type of engineered timbers and connection systems used in timber concrete composite structures. The literature references were selected and reviewed carefully to get a detailed overview of the use of timber and connections systems in timber-concrete composite structures. The list of connection systems used in the timber-concrete composite structures was reviewed from the previous works to perceive its advantages and disadvantages. It was found that the glued joint is the stiffest connection but low in ductility. Mechanical fasteners such as screw connections have moderate stiffness and ductility compared to the hardwood studs which have the lowest stiffness and the highest ductility. The design models of connection strength and stiffness of the screw connections were assembled and discussed to recognise their limitations to the design of timber-concrete composite structures

    Employability: does university-industry linkages matters

    This study is aimed at identifying the important university-industry linkages (UILs) activities that can be pivotal in developing self-perceived employability among Pakistani university students. It also examines the relationship between UILs and self-perceived employability. It seeks to answer the question, whether the dimensions of UILs plays any role in selfperceived employability among Pakistani university students? Design/Methodology/Approach: The instrument developed by Ishengoma, and Vaaland (2016) was used to identify the important UILs activities and selfperceived employability among students was measured through Rothwell, Herbert, & Rothwell (2008)' scale. A sample of 285 university students who are enrolled in 11 federally chartered universities of Islamabad, Pakistan was surveyed via close ended questionnaire through emails and in person. Descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM were applied to tests the hypothesized relationship by using SmartPLS. Finding: The study results reveal that all three dimensions of UILs (1. collaborative training & educational activities, 2. collaborative consulting activities, 3. collaborative research activities) are positively related to self-perceived employability, and hence, supports all three hypotheses. The strong and significant regression results are indicative of this conjecture. The study also reflects the student internship programs and joint projects are most popular UILs activity in Pakistani universities. Implications: The research findings augment our understanding of UILs in Pakistan and how they relate to self-perceived employability. The study findings have implications for universities who are striving for better role in society and for industry, who want to be innovative in order to remain competitive. Lastly it has special implications for students who are about to enter in their professional lives and for policy makers to redefining the role of universities, industry and government to promote employability. Originality/value: This research adds values to existing literature on UILs, as most of previous UILs are descriptive and exploratory in nature. This is a unique explanatory study which relates UILs with employability, particularly in context of a developing country

    A convenient three-step method for synthesis of heptyl (4-trifluoroacetyl)benzoate, an important neutral anion carrier, has been developed. The key step of the method is acylation of toluene by trifluoroacetic anhydride in presence of aluminium chloride at –8 – –10 oC. The procedure gives high overall yield and, unlike the earlier methods, does not include any organometallic reagents, therefore allowing scaling it up to several hundred grams, that makes the target compound much more readily available.Усовершенствованный метод получения гептилового эфира 4-трифторацетилбензойной кислоты Разработан удобный трeхстадийный метод синтеза гептилового эфира 4-трифторацетилбензойной кислоты, широко применяющегося в потенциометрическом анализе в качестве нейтрального переносчика анионов. Ключевой стадией метода является ацилирование толуола трифторуксусным ангидридом в присутствии хлорида алюминия при –8 – –10 oC. Данная процедура позволяет получить высокий общий выход продукта и, в отличие от описанных в литературе методик, не требует использования металлоорганических реагентов, что позволяет увеличить масштаб синтеза до сотен граммов и сделать целевой продукт значительно более доступным

    White Blood Cell Count and Mortality in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging

    ObjectivesWe investigated the secular trend in white blood cell (WBC) count and the relationship between WBC count and mortality between 1958 and 2002.BackgroundThe WBC count is a clinical marker of inflammation and a strong predictor of mortality. Limited data exist on the WBC count secular trend and the relationship between WBC and mortality.MethodsOne thousand eighty-three women and 1,720 men were evaluated longitudinally in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Blood samples and medical information were collected at the study entry and every 2 years during follow-up visits. The WBC count and all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality were assessed.ResultsA downward trend in WBC count was observed from 1958 to 2002. The secular downward trend was independent of age, gender, race, smoking, body mass index, and physical activity. The WBC count was nonlinearly associated with all-cause mortality and almost linearly associated with cardiovascular mortality. Participants with baseline WBC <3,500 cells/mm3and WBC >6,000 cells/mm3had higher mortality than those with 3,500 to 6,000 WBC/mm3. Within each WBC group, age-adjusted mortality rates declined in successive cohorts from the 1960s to the 1990s. Participants who died had higher WBC than those who survived, and the difference was statistically significant within 5 years before death.ConclusionsOur study provides evidence for a secular downward trend in WBC count over the period from 1958 to 2002. Higher WBC counts are associated with higher mortality in successive cohorts. We found no evidence that the decline of age-specific mortality rates that occurred from 1960 to 2000 was attributable to a secular downward trend in WBC

    We review experiments colliding electrons(/positrons) on protons at high energies at HERA, focussing on the ZEUS experiment. We describe the ZEUS detector, including its data acquisition system, and look at a specific part, namely the electronic system for its calorimeter readout control, in more detail. Data analysis is described, and results pertaining the proton structure is given. It is found that the naive quark model cannot explain the results obtained at small fractional momentum, and this requires quantum chromodynamics. Also it is found that diffractive reactions, with large rapidity gaps, contribute substantially; efforts are being carried out to understand them.Comment: "Quark matter - attoscale electron microscopy of the proton".     ROLE OF SAWDUST IN THE REMOVAL OF IRON FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION

    ABSTRACT Sawdust, inexpensive material has been utilized as an absorbent for the removal of iron from aqueous solution for their safe disposal. The adsorption experiments of untreated sawdust (SD) and treated sawdust (SDC) have been carried out at room temperature using the batch test. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to observe sorption phenomena of sawdust in the removal of iron. The results indicate that the sawdust was capable in removing iron in aqueous solution. The results have shown that the Langmuir isotherm was found well fitted into the experimental data as compared to the Freundlich isotherm. It was found that, chemisorptions and physisorption were the prime mechanism for the process of adsorption to occur between the sawdust and iron. The results also proved that the acid sulphuric treated sawdust is much better than that of untreated sawdust as an adsorbent for iron

    Electric Properties of Organic-on-Inorganic n-Si/VOPc Heterojunction

    In the current study vanadyl-phthalocyanine (VOPc) thin films were deposited by vacuum evaporation on n-Si substrate resulting in an organic-on-inorganic (n-Si/VOPc) heterojunctions. Ag films were deposited as electrodes. Thicknesses of the VOPc films were in the range of 100-300 nm. The dark I-V characteristics exhibited rectification behavior. The rectification ratio (RR) decreased from 4 to 0.4 as the thickness of the VOPc film decreased. The dark I-V characteristics were simulated by modified Schokley equation and spaace-charge limited currents (SCLC) approach. Investigations were carried out to study the effect of VOPc films thickness on reverse saturation current , diode quality factor and mobility of charge carriers

    Phase diagram of superfluid 3He in "nematically ordered" aerogel

    Results of experiments with liquid 3He immersed in a new type of aerogel are described. This aerogel consists of Al2O3 strands which are nearly parallel to each other, so we call it as a "nematically ordered" aerogel. At all used pressures a superfluid transition was observed and a superfluid phase diagram was measured.
