Probing magnetic ordering in air stable iron-rich van der Waals minerals
In the rapidly expanding field of two-dimensional materials, magnetic
monolayers show great promise for the future applications in nanoelectronics,
data storage, and sensing. The research in intrinsically magnetic
two-dimensional materials mainly focuses on synthetic iodide and telluride
based compounds, which inherently suffer from the lack of ambient stability. So
far, naturally occurring layered magnetic materials have been vastly
overlooked. These minerals offer a unique opportunity to explore air-stable
complex layered systems with high concentration of local moment bearing ions.
We demonstrate magnetic ordering in iron-rich two-dimensional phyllosilicates,
focusing on mineral species of minnesotaite, annite, and biotite. These are
naturally occurring van der Waals magnetic materials which integrate local
moment baring ions of iron via magnesium/aluminium substitution in their
octahedral sites. Due to self-inherent capping by silicate/aluminate
tetrahedral groups, ultra-thin layers are air-stable. Chemical
characterization, quantitative elemental analysis, and iron oxidation states
were determined via Raman spectroscopy, wavelength disperse X-ray spectroscopy,
X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry measurements were
performed to examine the magnetic ordering. These layered materials exhibit
paramagnetic or superparamagnetic characteristics at room temperature. At low
temperature ferrimagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordering occurs, with the
critical ordering temperature of 38.7 K for minnesotaite, 36.1 K for annite,
and 4.9 K for biotite. In-field magnetic force microscopy on iron bearing
phyllosilicates confirmed the paramagnetic response at room temperature,
present down to monolayers.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Electronic and lattice structure of small II-VI and I-III-VI quantum dots: a comparative spectroscopic study

The Influence of Process Parameters on the Microstructural Properties of Spray-Pyrolyzed ÎČ-Ga2O3
In this work, the deposition of ÎČ-Ga2O3 microstructures and thin films was performed with Ga(NO3)3 solutions by ultrasonic nebulization and spray coating as low-cost techniques. By changing the deposition parameters, the shape of ÎČ-Ga2O3 microstructures was controlled. Micro-spheres were obtained by ultrasonic nebulization. Micro-flakes and vortices were fabricated by spray coating aqueous concentrated and diluted precursor solutions, respectively. Roundish flakes were achieved from waterâethanol mixtures, which were rolled up into tubes by increasing the number of deposition cycles. Increasing the ethanol-to-water ratio allows continuous thin films at an optimal Ga(NO3)3 concentration of 0.15 M and a substrate temperature of 190 °C to be formed. The monoclinic ÎČ-Ga2O3 phase was achieved by thermal annealing at 1000 °C in an ambient atmosphere. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-Raman spectroscopy were employed to characterize these microstructures. In the XRD study, in addition to the phase information, the residual stress values were determined using the sin2(Ï) method. Raman spectroscopy confirms that the ÎČ-Ga2O3 phase and relative shifts of the Raman modes of the different microstructures can partially be assigned to residual stress. The high-frequency Raman modes proved to be more sensitive to shifting and broadening than the low-frequency Raman modes
âGreenâ Aqueous Synthesis and Advanced Spectral Characterization of Size-Selected Cu2ZnSnS4 Nanocrystal Inks
Structure, composition, and optical properties of colloidal mercaptoacetate-stabilized Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystal inks produced by a âgreenâ method directly in aqueous solutions were characterized. A size-selective precipitation procedure using 2-propanol as a non-solvent allows separating a series of fractions of CZTS nanocrystals with an average size (bandgap) varying from 3ânm (1.72âeV) to 2ânm (2.04âeV). The size-selected CZTS nanocrystals revealed also phonon confinement, with the main phonon mode frequency varying by about 4âcmâ1 between 2ânm and 3ânm NCs
Copper-Content Dependent Structural and Electrical Properties of CZTS Films Formed by “Green” Colloidal Nanocrystals
Thin films of colloidal CZTS nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized using a “green” approach in water with a variation of the copper-to-tin ratio are investigated by Raman scattering, mid-infrared (molecular vibrations) and near-infrared (free carrier) absorption, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), electrical conductivity, and conductive atomic force microscopy (cAFM). We determined the effect of the actual Cu content on the phonon spectra, electrical conductivity, and spectral parameters of the plasmon band. An increase in the electrical conductivity of the NC films upon annealing at 220 °C is explained by three factors: formation of a CuxS nanophase at the CZTS NC surface, partial removal of ligands, and improved structural perfection. The presence of the CuxS phase is concluded to be the determinant factor for the CZTS NC film conductivity. CuxS can be reliably detected based on the analysis of the modified Auger parameter of copper, derived from XPS data and corroborated by Raman spectroscopy data. Partial removal of the ligand is concluded from the agreement of the core-level XPS and vibrational IR spectra. The degree of lattice perfection can be conveniently assessed from the Raman data as well. Further important information derived from a combination of photoelectron and optical data is the work function, ionization potential, and electron affinity of the NC films
Raman study of flash-lamp annealed aqueous Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals
The effect of flash-lamp annealing (FLA) on the re-crystallization of thin films made of colloidal Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals (NCs) is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Unlike similar previous studies of NCs synthesized at high temperatures in organic solvents, NCs in this work, which have diameters as small as 2â6 nm, were synthesized under environmentally friendly conditions in aqueous solution using small molecules as stabilizers. We establish the range of FLA conditions providing an efficient re-crystallization in the thin film of NCs, while preserving their kesterite structure and improving their crystallinity remarkably. The formation of secondary phases at higher FLA power densities, as well as the dependence of the formation on the film thickness are also investigated. Importantly, no inert atmosphere for the FLA treatment of the NCs is required, which makes this technology even more suitable for mass production, in particular for printed thin films on flexible substrates
Phonon Spectra of Strongly Luminescent Nonstoichiometric AgâInâS, CuâInâS, and HgâInâS Nanocrystals of Small Size
We present a detailed analysis of Raman and infrared (IR) phonon spectra of strongly luminescent non-stoichiometric M-In-S (M = Cu, Ag, Hg) and core/shell M-In-S/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) of small size (d  2-4 nm), formed by means of aqueous colloidal chemistry under mild conditions. Despite presumably similar factors determining position and broadening of the Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks, phonon spectra are shown to be more sensitive to NC composition and crystals structure. The spectral Raman pattern of these strongly M-deficient M-In-S NCs is different from that of the corresponding stoichiometric phases, e.g. CuInS2 or AgIn5S8, and excludes its assignment to relevant binary sulfides, e.g. In2S3. Resonant behavior of relative peak intensities in Raman spectra is different from that of larger-size stoichiometric NCs and bulk samples studied before, while the temperature dependence reveals an analogous enhancement of the highest-frequency LO modes supporting an unambiguous assignment of the latter. Therefore, we conclude that the Raman spectra observed are characteristic of the specific structure of these highly non-stoichiometric small NCs. IR modes of these NCs occur in the same frequency range as the Raman ones but at higher frequencies than the IR phonons in bulk material. The IR spectra are less characteristic, compared to Raman ones, revealing more similarity among the three NC compounds and with the bulk counterparts
