    The Novel in the Epoch of Social Systems: Or, “Maps of the World in Its Becoming”

    These pages pose a general, even rough, question: What is the situation of the artwork, and particularly the novel, in what may be described as the epoch of social systems? I mean to suggest that this question has emerged, if often inexplicitly, on a range of fronts, in recent versions of the so-called “method wars” in literary studies, and in the humanities more generally. If we demilitarize this rhetoric, and demobilize the nearly one-word arguments that tend to underwrite it, it may be possible to get at the intricated place of the novel among social systems today. It may be possible too to get at (borrowing Alexander Kluge’s good way of framing such matters) something of the precision of rough ideas. Perhaps no American novelist more incisively stages what this convergence looks like—what this systems-ironic turn in the form of the novel means—than Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy’s fiction serves as the throughput of the analysis of the shape and distinction of the art system among a manifold of comparable, and rival, social systems. It provides a view of the pathos, and enchantments, of networks and systems of systems, across the practices and disciplines, the tableaux and forms, the proliferating self-descriptions and roadmaps of contemporary life

    Managing Activities at Wineries: Building and Sustaining a Place-Based Brand

    The Willamette Valley Winery Association, Oregon Winery Association, Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, and Oregon Department of Agriculture asked the authors to develop information needed to help inform discussions regarding the replacement for the soon-to-sunset HB 3280. HB 3280, signed by the Governor in August of 2011, provided a means for defining and regulating wine-related and non-wine-related events occurring or proposed to occur at wineries and vineyards in Oregon, often in exclusive farm use zones. Our charge was to investigate the following policy issue: How have wine regions permitted and managed a range of uses and activities at wineries, some of which are indirectly connected to the making or selling of wine? How can wine region land use regulations contribute to sustaining the brand for a region? How can farmland winery codes best maintain compatibility with other crops and farming activities? This report is presented in three parts. We begin with the literature review, and the lessons learned from that research. We then present the four cases and the lessons learned from them. This report concludes with a synthesis of the findings from the literature review and the case studies, along with our recommendations for how this information might be applied to the development of a replacement for HB 3280 in the next legislative session

    Suppression of electron spin decoherence of the diamond NV center by a transverse magnetic field

    We demonstrate that the spin decoherence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond can be suppressed by a transverse magnetic field if the electron spin bath is the primary decoherence source. The NV spin coherence, created in "a decoherence-free subspace" is protected by the transverse component of the zero-field splitting, increasing the spin-coherence time about twofold. The decoherence due to the electron spin bath is also suppressed at magnetic fields stronger than ~25 gauss when applied parallel to the NV symmetry axis. Our method can be used to extend the spin-coherence time of similar spin systems for applications in quantum computing, field sensing, and other metrologies.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

    The clinicomolecular landscape of de novo versus relapsed stage IV metastatic breast cancer

    Background: de novo metastatic breast cancer (dnMBC) is responsible for 6–10% of breast cancer presentations with increasing incidence and has remained resistant to detection by mammography screening. Recent publications hypothesized that in addition to poor screening uptake, the presentation of dnMBC may be due to its unfavourable biology which remains unknown at the molecular level. Here we investigated the tumour biology of dnMBC in the form of clinicopathology, genomic alterations and differential gene expression to create a comparative landscape of de novo versus relapsed metastatic breast cancer (rMBC). Additionally, to address the current screening limitations, we conducted a preliminary biomarker investigation for early dnMBC detection. Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, gene expression and clinical data were accessed from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) for primary tumours of treatment-naïve patients with dnMBC (n = 17), rMBC (n = 49), and normal tissue (n = 113). The clinical and histological data were assessed categorically using Fisher's Exact-Test for significance (p < .05), or continuously using the Mann-Whitney Test (p < .05) where appropriate. The differential gene expression analysis was performed using EdgeR's negative binomial distribution model with a false discovery rate (FDR) <0.05. The resulting gene list was analysed manually for roles in metastasis as well as ontologically using STRING-DB with FDR <0.05. Results: dnMBCs showed improved median survival vs rMBC (36 vs. 12 months). dnMBCs were more likely to be hormone receptor positive, less likely to be triple negative with lower histological lymphocytic infiltrate. In terms of genome alterations, dnMBCs had 4-fold increased PTEN mutations and poor survival with ABL2 and GATA3 alterations. Expression-wise, dnMBCs down-regulated TNFa, IL-17 signalling, and chemotaxis, while up-regulating steroid biosynthesis, cell migration, and cell adhesion. Biomarker analysis detected pre-existing and novel breast cancer biomarkers. Conclusion: The comparative tumour landscape revealed significant clinical, pathological and molecular differences between dnMBC and rMBC, indicating that dnMBC may be a separate biological entity to rMBC at the primary level with differing paths to metastasis. Additionally, we provided a list of potential serum biomarkers that may be useful in detecting dnMBC in its pre-metastatic window if such a window exists

    A Vegetation and Fire History of Lake Titicaca since the Last Glacial Maximum

    Fine-resolution fossil pollen and charcoal analyses reconstruct a vegetation and fire history in the area surrounding Lake Titicaca (3810 m, Peru/Bolivia) since ca. 27,500 cal yr BP (hereafter BP). Time control was based on 26 accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) radiocarbon dates. Seventeen AMS dates and 155 pollen and charcoal samples between ca. 17,500 BP and ca. 3,100 BP allow a centennial-scale reconstruction of deglacial and early- to mid-Holocene events. Local and regional fire signals were based on the separation of two charcoal size fractions, ≥180 μm and 179–65 μm. Charcoal abundance correlated closely with the proportion of woody taxa present in the pollen spectra. Little or no pollen was detected in the sedimentary record prior to ca. 21,000 BP. Very cold climatic conditions prevailed, with temperatures suggested to be at least 5–8°C cooler than present. Increases in pollen concentration suggest initial warming at ca. 21,000 BP with a more significant transition toward deglaciation ca. 17,700 BP. Between 17,700 BP and 13,700 BP, puna brava is progressively replaced by puna and sub-puna elements. The most significant changes between the Pleistocene and the Holocene floras were largely complete by 13,700 BP, providing an effective onset of near-modern conditions markedly earlier than in other Andean records. Fire first occurs in the catchment at ca. 17,700 BP and becomes progressively more important as fuel loads increase. No evidence is found of a rapid cooling and warming coincident with the Younger Dryas chron. A dry event between ca. 9,000 BP and 3,100 BP, with a peak between 6,000 and 4,000 BP, is inferred from changes in the composition of aquatics, and the marsh community as pollen of Cyperaceae is replaced by Poaceae, Apiaceae, Plantago and the shrub Polylepis. Human disturbance of the landscape is evident in the pollen spectra after ca. 3,100 BP with the appearance of weed species

    A Dynamic, Data-Driven, Decision Support System for Emergency Medical Services

    Abstract. In crisis, decisions must be made in human perceptual timeframes under pressure to respond to dynamic uncertain conditions. To be effective management must have access to real time environmental data in a form that can be immediately understood and acted upon. The emerging computing model of Dynamic Data-Driven Application Systems (DDDAS) fits well in crisis situations where rapid decision-making is essential. We explore the value of a DDDAS (iRevive) in support of emergency medical treatment decisions in response to a crisis. This complex multi-layered dynamic environment both feeds and responds to an ever-changing stream of real-time data that enables coordinated decision-making by heterogeneous personnel across a wide geography at the same time.

    Partial Discharge Characteristics of C3F7CN Gas Mixture Using the UHF Method

    Manufacturing or assembly defects in gas-insulated equipment can introduce field enhancements that could lead to partial discharge (PD). This paper examines the PD characteristics of SF6 alternatives considered for potential application to retro-filling existing SF6-designed equipment. The PD performance of the C3F7CN/CO2 gas mixture and SF6 were characterised adopting the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method and investigated for different defect configurations, pressures, and gas mediums. Hemispherical rod-plane and plane-to-plane configurations with needle on the high-voltage (HV) and ground electrodes were used to mimic conductor and enclosure protrusion defects, respectively. The results demonstrate that with a needle length of 15 mm, the 20% C3F7CN/80% CO2 gas mixture had almost half the partial discharge inception and extinction voltages (PDIV/EV) of SF6. For less divergent fields, the 20% C3F7CN/80% CO2 gas mixture demonstrated a comparable PDIV/EV performance as SF6. The phase-resolved PD patterns of the 20% C3F7CN/80% CO2 gas mixture demonstrated a 3-stage transition phase that was not observed with SF6, which could be due to the discharge mechanism of the weakly attaching CO2 gas used within the mixture

    Maximizing the Benefit-Cost Ratio of Anthracyclines in Metastatic Breast Cancer: Case Report of a Patient with a Complete Response to High-Dose Doxorubicin

    Despite the clinical efficacy of anthracycline agents such as doxorubicin, dose-limiting cardiac toxicities significantly limit their long-term use. Here, we present the case of a 33-year-old female patient with extensive metastatic ER+/PR+/HER2– mucinous adenocarcinoma of the breast, who was started on doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide therapy after progressing on paclitaxel and ovarian suppressor goserelin with aromatase inhibitor exemestane. The patient was comanaged by cardiology, who carefully monitored measures of cardiac function, including EKGs, serial echocardiograms, and profiling of lipids, troponin, and pro-BNP every 2 months. The patient was treated with the cardioprotective agent dexrazoxane, and changes in cardiac markers [e.g. decreases in ejection fraction (EF)] were immediately addressed by therapeutic intervention with the ACE inhibitor lisinopril and beta-blocker metoprolol. The patient had a complete response to doxorubicin therapy, with a cumulative dose of 1,350 mg/m2, which is significantly above the recommended limits, and to our knowledge, the highest dose reported in literature. Two and a half years after the last doxorubicin cycle, the patient is asymptomatic with no cardiotoxicity and an excellent quality of life. This case highlights the importance of careful monitoring and management of doxorubicin-mediated cardiotoxicity, and that higher cumulative doses of anthracyclines can be considered in patients with ongoing clinical benefit
