Collaborative Capability Design: Redundancy of Potentialities
In this study we extend the socio-ecological concept of two contrasting design principles applicable to all work systems. Reframing those design principles as strategic as well as operational choices leads us to propose a third design principle, Design Principle 3 (DP3), which has remained undeveloped in social ecology. We call this design principle Redundancy of Potentialities and demonstrate its application in transorganizational work systems. We argue that DP3 is at the core of socio-ecological practice and is therefore appropriate for coping with the highly turbulent environments now experienced in many industries and fields. We offer several illustrations of DP3 in practice and draw implications for enhancing capabilities for creative collaboration in inter-organizational fields through deliberate attention to design

Results of performance testing the Russian RPV temperature measurement probe used for annealing
This paper provides information on three (3) topics related to temperature measurements in an annealing procedure: (1) results of a series of experiments performed by CNIITMASH of the Russian consortium MOHT on their reactor pressure vessel (RPV) temperature measurement probe, (2) a discussion regarding uncertainties and errors in RPV temperature measurements, and (3) predictions from a thermal model of a spherical RPV temperature measurement probe. MOHT teamed with MPR Associates and was to perform the Annealing Demonstration Project (ADP) on behalf of the US Department of Energy, ESEERCo, EPRI, CRIEPI, Framatome, and Consumers Power Co. at the Midland plant. Experimental results show that the CNIITMASH probe errors are a maximum of about 27 C (49 F) during a 15 C/hr (27 F/hr) heat-up but only about 3 C (5.4 F) (0.6%) during the hold portion at 470 C (878 F). These errors are much smaller than those obtained from a similar series of experiments performed by Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia). The discussion about uncertainties and errors shows that results presented as a temperature difference provides a measure of the probe error. Qualitative agreement is shown between the model predictions, the experimental results of the CNIITMASH probe and the experimental results of a series of similar experiments performed by Sandia
Lattice Boltzmann simulation of liquid water transport in gas diffusion layers of proton exchange membrane fuel cells: Parametric studies on capillary hysteresis
Water management is crucial for reliable operation of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). Here, the gas diffusion layer (GDL) plays an essential role as it has to ensure efficient water removal from and oxygen transport to the catalyst layer.
In this study water transport through porous carbon felt GDLs was simulated using a 3D Color-Gradient Lattice Boltzmann model. Simulations were carried out on microstructures of plain and impregnated fiber substrates of a Freudenberg H14. The GDL microstructures were reconstructed from high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (-CT). For the distinction of carbon fibers and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the binarized microstructures an in-house algorithm was developed. The additive was specified heterogeneously in the GDL through-plane direction employing a PTFE loading profile as derived based on -CT image data. In the in-plane direction the additive was furthermore defined in a realistic fashion near carbon fiber intersections. Prior to parametric studies on capillary behavior a sophisticated modeling approach for semipermeable membranes had to be developed to account for experimental boundary conditions. Capillary hysteresis was then investigated by simulation of intrusion and drainage curves and subsequent comparison to testbench data

Collaborative governance for the sustainable development goals
The advent of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals has refocused global attention on the roles of business and other nonstate actors in achieving global goals. Often, business involvement takes the form of collaborations with the more traditional actors—governments and non‐governmental organizations. Although such partnerships for development have been seen before, the scale and expectations are new. This paper explores how and why these cross‐sector collaborations are evolving, and what steps can or should be taken to ensure that partnerships create public and private value. The arguments are illustrated with reference to cases of market‐driven partnerships for agriculture in Southeast Asia that are intended to engage marginalized smallholder farmers in global value chains in agriculture. The aims of these cross‐sector collaborations coincide with several targets of the Sustainable Development Goals such as poverty alleviation, decreasing environmental impact, and achieving food security. This is a hard case for mechanisms intended to protect public interests, given that the target beneficiaries (low‐income smallholder farmers and the environment) are unable to speak effectively for themselves. We find that structures and processes to align interests in ways that protect the public interest are both necessary and feasible, though not easy to achieve
