    Anoplophora glabripennis is a large wood-boring cerambycid beetle that has recently invaded North America and Europe from Asia. We discovered the common house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, in large cages housing A. glabripennis on trees and confirmed the ability of A. tepidariorum to prey upon adult A. glabripennis by placing the two species together within smaller containers where they could be more easily observed. Adult A. glabripennis, up to 600% of the spiders’ body length, exceed the maximum relative size of prey previously reported for A. tepidariorum or for solitary webbuilding spiders in general

    The Pennsylvania Gardener Selects (PGS) program represents a unique educational, evaluation, and marketing program that expands the opportunities for Master Gardener input and activity while benefiting the green industry and gardeners statewide. Through the PGS program, Master Gardeners have learned to evaluate plants, develop educational programs for the general public, and participate directly in the selection and marketing of superior plants for the consumer and commercial marketplace. The PGS program has been warmly received by the industry. Since 1999, the PGS program has grown to include 44 gardens in 39 of the 67 counties of Pennsylvania

    An Interactive Survey to Assess Consumer Knowledge About Landscape Plant Health Care and IPM Practices

    Employing a touch screen computer system with a survey tool in the format of a quiz can be used to assess consumer knowledge of integrated pest management and plant health care practices. This article describes the survey tool and environment the survey was administered under and summarizes the results of the survey. Homeowner knowledge of integrated pest management and plant health care concepts was high, with greater than half of the respondents choosing correct answers to the survey questions. These findings suggest that Cooperative Extension agents and specialists are positively affecting home landscape management by influencing consumer knowledge and practices

    CO hydrogenation over Co/Si02: catalytic tests and surface analysis of adsorbed hydrocarbons

    We have studied the CO hydrogenation over a Co/SiOl catalyst under mild reaction conditions (up to 4,4 bar total pressure, H2/CO = 2. T = 483 K) and performed a post-reaction analysis of the chemical surface composition by means of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) in hydrogen gas. A hydrocarbon chain growth probability alpha = 0.78 was found in the catalytic studies. The SIMS analysis revealed the existence of individually adsorbed C" Hv species up to CgH", in accordance with end-on bonding to the catalyst surface. These species were removed from the catalyst surface in the subsequent H2 TPR experiment. Significant methane desorption occurred at temperatures (>500 K) well above those of the longer-chain hydrocarbons indicating either an increasing hydrogenolysis activity of Co metal during H2-TPR or the presence of a more tightly bound "carbidic" adsorbate under FT conditionsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Unoccupied electronic states of Ge(001) 2 Ă— 1 by constant initial band photoemission

    The unoccupied electronic band structure of the Ge(001)2 × 1 surface along the \̄gGJ̄J̄' line of the surface Brillouin zone is investigated in an energy regime from the vacuum level up to about 22 eV above the valence band maximum (VBM) by applying a new constant initial band (CIB) mode of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. In this mode final energy and photon energy are simultaneously scanned in accordance with energy and momentum conservation using a preselected dispersive initial band. We have chosen the well known occupied dangling-bond band as initial band which lies close to the uppermost bulk band at k⊥ = 0. Several bulk emission features are observed, showing good agreement with pseudopotential bands. In addition, about 13 eV above VBM we observe an emission revealing the periodicity of the reconstructed surface being attributable to a surface state. Constant initial energy spectra taken at normal emission further support its two-dimensionality
