RCA Satcom 3-Axis spacecraft experience at geosynchronous altitude

    Get PDF
The RCA Satcom space segment presently consists of two three-axis stabilized communication satellites which have been in orbit at geosynchronous altitudes for 11 and 8 months respectively. Both satellites have experienced two eclipse seasons since the beginning of operations. Neither spacecraft has exhibited any anomalous behavior that can be attributed to the effects of spacecraft charging. A brief discussion of the history, spacecraft characteristics and design techniques is presented

Less is more: Antibiotics at the beginning of life

    Get PDF
Antibiotic exposure at the beginning of life can lead to increased antimicrobial resistance and perturbations of the developing microbiome. Early-life microbiome disruption increases the risks of developing chronic diseases later in life. Fear of missing evolving neonatal sepsis is the key driver for antibiotic overtreatment early in life. Bias (a systemic deviation towards overtreatment) and noise (a random scatter) affect the decision-making process. In this perspective, we advocate for a factual approach quantifying the burden of treatment in relation to the burden of disease balancing antimicrobial stewardship and effective sepsis management

The application of social marketing in health prevention

    No full text
Zmiany zachodzące w gospodarce, społeczeństwie wpływają na proces kształtowania się systemu opieki zdrowotnej. Do ogólnie rozumianego systemu opieki zdrowotnej zaliczyć można działania związane z profilaktyką zdrowia. Koncepcja marketingu społecznego zwiększa swój udział w działaniach na rzecz profilaktyki zdrowia. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości aplikacji koncepcji marketingu społecznego w obszar profilaktyki zdrowotnej w Polsce. Ilustracja empiryczna roli marketingu społecznego w odniesieniu do profilaktyki zdrowia została oparta o trzy studia przypadku oraz o ilościowe wyniki badań własnych. Ilościowe badania mają charakter pilotażowy i stanowią jedynie wstęp do dalszych rozważań i badań w podjętym temacie. Przedstawione w artykule wyniki badań są wycinkiem ogólnych badań prowadzonych w zakresie profilaktyki zdrowia poprzez działania marketingowe.Changes in the economy, society, influence the formation of the health care system. The health care system generally, include the activities related to the prevention of health. Noticeable is the increase of the participation of the concept of social marketing in promoting health prevention. The purpose of this article is to present the possibilities of the concept of social marketing applications in the area of preventive health care in Poland. An empirical illustration of the role of social marketing for health prevention is based on three case studies and the quantitative results of the study. Quantitative research is a pilot and are only a prelude to further discussion and research undertaken in the topic. The results presented in this paper are a segment of the general research in the field of preventive health through marketing activities

Fruit yields of 16 blackberry cultivars grown in central Poland.

In the springtime of 2005, 16 blackberry cultivars were planted in the Experimental Pomological Orchard in Skierniewice. They included the new blackberry cultivars: ‘Black Butte’, ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Chester’, ‘Helen’, ‘Karaka Black’, ‘Kotata’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Oregon’, ‘Silvan’, ‘Tayberry’, Tayberry Buckingham’ and ‘Tummel’. The new cultivars were compared with two standard blackberry varieties ‘Orkan’ and ‘Black Satin’. In the course of the experiment the varieties were tested in the climatic conditions of central Poland, with special attention paid to yield and fruit quality. All the varieties except ‘Tayberry Buckingham’ were found very promising; the plants, however, have to be protected from frosts typical during Polish winters. The highest yields were recorded for ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Loch Tay’. The largest fruits were produced by ‘Black Butte’. Although the Rubus hybrids: ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Tayberry’ and ‘Tummel’ are marked by low yields, they are interesting due to their original taste and fruit colour

Artificial intelligence in the diagnosis of necrotising enterocolitis in newborns

    No full text
Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common diseases in neonates and predominantly affects premature or very-low-birth-weight infants. Diagnosis is difficult and needed in hours since the first symptom onset for the best therapeutic effects. Artificial intelligence (AI) may play a significant role in NEC diagnosis. A literature search on the use of AI in the diagnosis of NEC was performed. Four databases (PubMed, Embase, arXiv, and IEEE Xplore) were searched with the appropriate MeSH terms. The search yielded 118 publications that were reduced to 8 after screening and checking for eligibility. Of the eight, five used classic machine learning (ML), and three were on the topic of deep ML. Most publications showed promising results. However, no publications with evident clinical benefits were found. Datasets used for training and testing AI systems were small and typically came from a single institution. The potential of AI to improve the diagnosis of NEC is evident. The body of literature on this topic is scarce, and more research in this area is needed, especially with a focus on clinical utility. Cross-institutional data for the training and testing of AI algorithms are required to make progress in this area

SANS investigation of precipitate microstructure in nickel-base superalloys Waspaloy and DT750

    No full text
Microstructure of Waspaloy and DT750 Ni-base superalloys was investigated after the heat treatment as well as after long thermal exposure by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). The SANS results clearly showed that there are large differences even between samples of the DT750 superalloy produced using different facilities. The modified heat treatment used for DT750 suppressed the formation of secondary precipitates. A strong influence of the thermal exposure on the superalloy microstructure was observed which can have an impact on the mechanical properties

Evaluating economic value of 23 strawberry cultivars in the climatic conditions of Central Europe

    No full text
Aim of the project was to test 23 strawberry cultivars in the climate of Poland and evaluate their economic value. 13 of discussed cultivars were newly bread in Poland and 10 are of foreign origin including cultivars that were never tested in East–Central Europe. All of these cultivars were evaluated in comparison to the 4 standard cultivars used in Poland. The experiment was conducted between 2004 and 2011 in central Poland in the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. The data were analyzed using linear mixed model. The results shows that cultivar ‘Paladyn’ performed exceptionally well regarding yield and fruit size. Thus, it is one of the best cultivars for including into canon strawberry cultivars, not only in Poland. The rest of tested cultivars, especially those with foreign origin, may need specific treatment or more investigation to accomplish more in the climatic conditions of this geographical region
