High-pressure Synthesis and Bulk Modulus of Non-centrosymmetric Superconductor Mo3Al2C

    Get PDF
Mo3Al2C is a superconductor without inversion symmetry (the transition temperature T C ~ 9K). We have succeeded in preparing high-quality samples of Mo3Al2C using the high-pressure synthesis technique. The samples were characterized by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Furthermore, powder XRD patterns for the samples with synchrotron radiation have been studied under high pressures up to around 10 GPa and the volume versus pressure curve for the compound has been investigated. A bulk modulus was estimated to be 221 GPa

Role of p-f Hybridization in the Metal-Non-Metal Transition of PrRu4P12

Electronic state evolution in the metal-non-metal transition of PrRu4P12 has been studied by X-ray and polarized neutron diffraction experiments. It has been revealed that, in the low-temperature non-metallic phase, two inequivalent crystal-field (CF) schemes of Pr3+ 4f^2 electrons with Gamma_1 and Gamma_4^(2) ground states are located at Pr1 and Pr2 sites forming the bcc unit cell surrounded by the smaller and larger cubic Ru-ion sublattices, respectively. This modulated electronic state can be explained by the p-f hybridization mechanism taking two intermediate states of 4f^1 and 4f^3. The p-f hybridization effect plays an important role for the electronic energy gain in the metal-non-metal transition originated from the Fermi surface nesting.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Optical Conductivity and Electronic Structure of CeRu4Sb12 under High Pressure

Optical conductivity [s(w)] of Ce-filled skutterudite CeRu4Sb12 has been measured at high pressure to 8 GPa and at low temperature, to probe the pressure evolution of its electronic structures. At ambient pressure, a mid-infrared peak at 0.1 eV was formed in s(w) at low temperature, and the spectral weight below 0.1 eV was strongly suppressed, due to a hybridization of the f electron and conduction electron states. With increasing external pressure, the mid-infrared peak shifts to higher energy, and the spectral weight below the peak was further depleted. The obtained spectral data are analyzed in comparison with band calculation result and other reported physical properties. It is shown that the electronic structure of CeRu4Sb12 becomes similar to that of a narrow-gap semiconductor under external pressure.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Microscopic Approach to Magnetism and Superconductivity of ff-Electron Systems with Filled Skutterudite Structure

In order to gain a deep insight into ff-electron properties of filled skutterudite compounds from a microscopic viewpoint, we investigate the multiorbital Anderson model including Coulomb interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and crystalline electric field effect. For each case of nn=1∌\sim13, where nn is the number of ff electrons per rare-earth ion, the model is analyzed by using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to evaluate magnetic susceptibility and entropy of ff electron. In order to make further step to construct a simplified model which can be treated even in a periodic system, we also analyze the Anderson model constructed based on the jj-jj coupling scheme by using the NRG method. Then, we construct an orbital degenerate Hubbard model based on the jj-jj coupling scheme to investigate the mechanism of superconductivity of filled skutterudites. In the 2-site model, we carefully evaluate the superconducting pair susceptibility for the case of nn=2 and find that the susceptibility for off-site Cooper pair is clearly enhanced only in a transition region in which the singlet and triplet ground states are interchanged.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, Typeset with jpsj2.cl

    Deoxyribo‐ and Ribonucleoside H‐Phosphonates

Most methods for preparing H‐phosphonate monoesters suffer from variable yields and are often incompatible with common protecting groups used in oligonucleotide synthesis. This unit describes four procedures that consistently give high yields of the desired products. Taken together, they provide an arsenal of phosphonylation prodecures that it compatible with most common protecting groups.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/143703/1/cpnc0206.pd

Decaying shock studies of phase transitions in MgOSiO2 systems: implications for the Super-Earths interiors

We report an experimental study of the phase diagrams of periclase (MgO), enstatite (MgSiO3) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at high pressures. We investigated with laser driven decaying shocks the pressure/temperature curves of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 between 0.2-1.2 TPa, 0.12-0.5 TPa and 0.2-0.85 TPa respectively. A melting signature has been observed in MgO at 0.47 TPa and 9860 K, while no phase changes were observed neither in MgSiO3 nor in Mg2SiO4. An increasing of reflectivity of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 liquids have been detected at 0.55 TPa -12 760 K, 0.15 TPa - 7540 K, 0.2 TPa - 5800 K, respectively. In contrast to SiO2, melting and metallization of these compounds do not coincide implying the presence of poor electrically conducting liquids close to the melting lines. This has important implications for the generation of dynamos in Super-earths mantles

Coherent oscillations of electrons in tunnel-coupled wells under ultrafast intersubband excitation

Ultrafast intersubband excitation of electrons in tunnell-coupled wells is studied depending on the structure parameters, the duration of the infrared pump and the detuning frequency. The temporal dependencies of the photoinduced concentration and dipole moment are obtained for two cases of transitions: from the single ground state to the tunnel-coupled excited states and from the tunnel-coupled states to the single excited state. The peculiarities of dephasing and population relaxation processes are also taken into account. The nonlinear regime of the response is also considered when the splitting energy between the tunnel-coupled levels is renormalized by the photoexcited electron concentration. The dependencies of the period and the amplitude of oscillations on the excitation pulse are presented with a description of the nonlinear oscillations damping.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure

Low-lying optical phonon modes in the filled skutterudite CeRu4Sb12

The phonon dynamics of filled skutterudite CeRu4Sb12 have been studied at room temperature by inelastic neutron scattering. Optical phonons associated with a large vibration of Ce atoms are observed at a relatively low energy of E = 6 meV, and show anticrossing behavior with acoustic phonons. We propose that the origin of the low lattice thermal conductivity in filled skutterudites can be attributed to intensive Umklapp scattering originating from low-lying optical phonons. By an analysis based on a Born-von Karman force model, the longitudinal force constants of the nearest Ce-Sb and Ce-Ru pairs are estimated to be 0.025 mdyn/A, while that of the nearest Ru-Sb pair is estimated to be 1.4 mdyn/A, indicating that the Ce atoms are bound very weakly to the surrounding rigid RuSb6-octahedron cages.Comment: 4pages, 5 figures, J. Part of the message comes in gesture: how people with aphasia convey information in different gesture types as compared with information in their speech

Background: Studies have shown that the gestures produced by people with aphasia (PWA) can convey information useful for their communication. However, the exact significance of the contribution to message communication via gesture remains unclear. Furthermore, it remains unclear how different gesture types and representation techniques impact message conveyance. Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the contribution of gesture to PWA’s communication. We specifically focussed on the degree to which different gesture types and representation techniques convey information absent in the speech of PWA. Methods & Procedure: We studied the gestures produced by 46 PWA and nine non-brain-damaged participants (NBDP) during semi-structured conversation. For each of the different types of gestures and representation techniques we identified whether these conveyed essential information, that is information that was absent in speech. Rather than looking at information that was either similar to information in speech or additional to information in speech, we focused on the essential gestures only. Outcomes & Results: For PWA, a fifth of their gestures were Essential. Despite individual differences between PWA, the majority produced more Essential gestures than NBDP, who produced limited amounts of Essential gestures. Essential information was mostly conveyed by specific gesture types: Pointing, Emblems and Iconic gesture. Within the group of iconic gestures, not only Handling and Enact but also Object and Shape gestures, were often Essential. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a great proportion of gestures produced by most PWA convey information essential for understanding their communication. In their communication advice, speech language therapists could draw attention to specific gesture types to make sure that interlocutors pay more attention to these gestures when communicating with PWA

Missing and Quenched Gamow Teller Strength

Gamow-Teller strength functions in full (pf)8(pf)^{8} spaces are calculated with sufficient accuracy to ensure that all the states in the resonance region have been populated. Many of the resulting peaks are weak enough to become unobservable. The quenching factor necessary to bring into agreement the low lying observed states with shell model predictions is shown to be due to nuclear correlations. To within experimental uncertainties it is the same that is found in one particle transfer and (e,e') reactions. Perfect consistency between the observed 48Ca(p,n)48Sc^{48}Ca(p,n)^{48}Sc peaks and the calculation is achieved by assuming an observation threshold of 0.75\% of the total strength, a value that seems typical in several experimentsComment: 11 pages, 6 figures avalaible upon request, RevTeX, FTUAM-94/0
