    Neurosurgery training camp for medical student: experience of the Turkish neurosugery academy and Bursa Uludag University

    IntroductionTo highlight the importance of hands-on experiences and mentorship in shaping the future workforce of specialized medical professionals via a Neurosurgery Training Camp.MethodsResponses of the questionnaire regarding the Neurosurgery Training Camp organized by Bursa Uludag University's Faculty of Medicine and the Turkish Neurosurgery Academy were reviewed retrospectively. A one-day program was organized to introduce neurosurgery to medical students. During the camp, the students participated in interactive presentations delivered by faculty members, had lunch together, became acquainted with neurosurgical tools and technologies, and performed interventions. With pre and postworkshop questionnaire, student's expectations and thoughts about camp was evaluated.ResultsForty-one students from 10 medical schools, spanning every year of study, attended the camp. Approximately 39% of the attendees (n = 16) were women and 61% (n = 25) were men. The post-workshop survey results demonstrated that 73% of the students (n = 30) were inclined to pursue a career in neurosurgery after the camp, 21.9% (n = 9) remained undecided, and 4.8% (n = 2) chose not to pursue neurosurgery. Feedback from the post-workshop questionnaire highlighted that all students perceived the camp as beneficial in providing insights into their future careers and aiding in making a decision regarding their career paths.DiscussionThe neurosurgical training camp effectively inspired and educated medical students about the discipline of neurosurgery. Furthermore, the camp effectively altered the career aspirations and perceptions of neurosurgery among the participating students

    Thermal decomposition kinetics of the antiparkinson drug “entacapone” under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions

    © 2017 AkadĂ©miai KiadĂł, Budapest, Hungary The thermal decomposition kinetics of entacapone (ENT) have been investigated via thermogravimetric analysis under non-isothermal and isothermal conditions which provide useful stability information for their processing in the pharmaceutical industry and also for predicting shelf life and suitable storage conditions. The determination of the kinetic parameters for the decomposition process under non-isothermal conditions in a nitrogen atmosphere at four heating rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 °C min −1 ) was performed. Kinetic parameters of the decomposition process for ENT were calculated through Friedman, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose, and Li–Tang methods. This work demonstrates that the activation energies calculated from the decomposition reactions by different methods are consistent with each other. Moreover, the thermodynamic functions of the decomposition reaction were also calculated

    The present study deals with the preparation of Schiff base and its chelates with some transition metal ions, e.g., Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Fe(II). The structures of the ligand N-(5-ethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl) terephthalaldehyde imine (L) and its complexes have been synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H-NMR spectra, elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, UV-vis and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA).     ABSTRACT In this study, the ligands of bis(2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole) (L 1 ), bis(2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl)methane (L 2 ) and bis(2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl)benzene (L 3 ) have been synthesized via the reactions of oxalic acid (1a), malonic acid (1b) and terephthalic acid (1c) with thiosemicarbazide. The structures of (L 1 ), (L 2 ) and (L 3 ) compounds have been elucidated, by elemental and spectroscopic analyses. Then, novel new Co (II) complexes of (L 1 ), (L 2 ) and (L 3 ) have been synthesized; and the structures of these complexes have been determined by elemental analysis, spectrometric and TGA/DTA methods and magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements. Coordination numbers of dimeric, L 1 Co and L 2 Co complexes and monomeric L 3 Co complex are found to be six.     WOS: 000277631000008Nickel, as a heavy metal, is toxic for many living species. Thus, the determination of trace amounts of nickel in environmental samples is of great importance. In the present study, new, sensitive, simple and validated solid phase extraction method is developed for the determination of nickel. In recent study nickel was preconcentrated as diamino-4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)- 1H-pyrazole (PDANP) chelates (Ni-PDANP) from sample solutions using a column containing Amberlite XAD-7 and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The optimum experimental parameters such as pH of the medium, sample flow rate, eluent and effect of matrix ions on the method efficiency were investigated. The optimum pH value for quantitative sorption of Ni-PDANP was found between 6.0 and 8.0. Elution process was performed by using 6 mL of 2 mol L-1 HCl. The sorption capacity of resin was determined to be 7.2 mg g(-1) for Ni. The preconcentration factor was 125. In optimized conditions. A relative standard deviation and detection limit were found to be 2.8% and 0.44 mu g L-1 respectively. The method was successfully applied to determine the trace amounts of nickel in tap water and mineral waters, and suitable recoveries were obtained (100.0-103.5%). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
