Dynamical structure factors of the magnetization-plateau state in the bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction
We calculate the dynamical structure factors of the magnetization-plateau
state in the bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor
interaction. The results show characteristic behaviors depending on the
next-nearest-neighbor interaction and the bond-alternation .
We discuss the lower excited states in comparison with the exact excitation
spectrums of an effective Hamiltonian. From the finite size effects,
characteristics of the lowest excited states are investigated. The
dispersionless mode of the lowest excitation appears in adequate sets of
and , indicating that the lowest excitation is localized
spatially and forms an isolated mode below the excitation continuum. We further
calculate the static structure factors. The largest intensity is located at
for small in fixed . With increasing , the
wavenumber of the largest intensity shifts towards , taking the
incommensurate value.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. B (2001
Search for VHE gamma rays from SS433/W50 with the CANGAROO-II telescope
SS433, located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, is a close
proximity binary system consisting of a compact star and a normal star. Jets of
material are directed outwards from the vicinity of the compact star
symmetrically to the east and west. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission is detected
from lobes lying on both sides. Shock accelerated electrons are expected to
generate sub-TeV gamma rays through the inverse-Compton process in the lobes.
Observations of the western X-ray lobe region of SS433/W50 system have been
performed to detect sub-TeV gamma-rays using the 10m CANGAROO-II telescope in
August and September, 2001, and July and September, 2002. The total observation
times are 85.2 hours for ON source, and 80.8 hours for OFF source data. No
significant excess of sub-TeV gamma rays has been found at 3 regions of the
western X-ray lobe of SS433/W50 system. We have derived 99% confidence level
upper limits to the fluxes of gamma rays and have set constraints on the
strengths of the magnetic fields assuming the synchrotron/inverse-Compton model
for the wide energy range of photon spectrum from radio to TeV. The derived
lower limits are 4.3 microgauss for the center of the brightest X-ray emission
region and 6.3 microgauss for the far end from SS433 in the western X-ray lobe.
In addition, we suggest that the spot-like X-ray emission may provide a major
contribution to the hardest X-ray spectrum in the lobe.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Astroparticle Physic
Detection of Gamma-rays around 1TeV from RX J0852.0-4622 by CANGAROO-II
We have detected gamma-ray emission at the 6sigma level at energies greater
than 500GeV from the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 (G266.2-1.2) using the
CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT). The flux was 0.12
times of that of Crab at 1TeV. The signal centroid is consistent with the peak
of the X-ray emission in the north-west rim of the remnant.Comment: 12pages, 4figures, to be published in ApJ
Detection of diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253
We report the TeV gamma-ray observations of the nearby normal spiral galaxy
NGC 253. At a distance of 2.5 Mpc, NGC 253 is one of the nearest
starburst galaxies. This relative closeness, coupled with the high star
formation rate in the galaxy, make it a good candidate TeV gamma-ray source.
Observations were carried out in 2000 and 2001 with the CANGAROO-II 10 m
imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescope. TeV gamma-ray emission is detected at
the level with a flux of at energies 0.5 TeV. The data indicate that the
emission region is broader than the point spread function of our telescope.Comment: 4 pages, double colomn, 3 figures, aa.cl
Search for TeV gamma-rays from SN 1987A in 2001
We searched for TeV gamma-rays from the remnant of SN 1987A around 5400 days
after the supernova. The observations were carried out in 2001, from November
16 to December 11, using the CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov
Telescope. In total, 708 minutes of ON- and 1019 minutes of OFF-source data
were obtained under good conditions. The detection threshold was estimated to
be 1 TeV, due to the mean zenith angle of 39. The upper limits for the
gamma-ray flux were obtained and compared with the previous observations and
theoretical models. The observations indicate that the gamma-ray luminosity is
lower than erg s at TeV.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publication, style file adde
Evidence of TeV gamma-ray emission from the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253
TeV gamma-rays were recently detected from the nearby normal spiral galaxy
NGC 253 (Itoh et al., 2002). Observations to detect the Cherenkov light images
initiated by gamma-rays from the direction of NGC 253 were carried out in 2000
and 2001 over a total period of 150 hours. The orientation of images in
gamma-ray--like events is not consistent with emission from a point source, and
the emission region corresponds to a size greater than 10 kpc in radius. Here,
detailed descriptions of the analysis procedures and techniques are given.Comment: 16 pages, 27 figures, aa.cl
Asian-Specific total knee system: 5-14 year follow-up study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Knee size and body size differ in Asians compared with Caucasians. Nevertheless, many total knee arthroplasty (TKA) prostheses used worldwide are made for Western Caucasian subjects. As a result, an Asian's knee might not fit these prostheses. We studied the Flexible Nichidai Knee (FNK) system, a new model of TKA for Asian patients. The purpose of this report is to investigate the outcomes of this prosthesis retrospectively.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We investigated 1055 primary TKAs in 595 patients who underwent FNK for osteoarthritis (OA) in Japan and were followed for > 5 years. The knee score and function score were used for clinical evaluation. We examined the range of motion (ROM) preoperatively and at final follow-up and radiographic assessments. In addition, postoperative complications were investigated. A survivorship analysis was also conducted using two endpoints: revision for any reason and aseptic failure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>890 knees in 502 patients were available for study (follow-up rate of 96.0%). The mean follow-up term was 8.3 years (range, 5.0-14.1 years). The knee and function score significantly improved from 41.3 to 90.3 and from 39.1 to 76.2 points, respectively (p < 0.001). The mean ROM in FNK posterior cruciate retaining (CR) type and FNK posterior-stabilized (PS) type ameliorated significantly from 107.8° and 95.6° to 110.7° and 110.4°, respectively (p < 0.01). Ten knees underwent revision surgery (infection in 3 cases, instability in 2, loosening in 2, and non-union of femoral supracondylar fracture, severe pain, and recurrent hemarthrosis in 1 each). The survivorship rate was 99.4% (95% CI, 99.0-99.8) at 5 years (n = 952 patients at risk) and 96.2% (95% CI, 91.9-100) at 12.5 years (n = 49 patients at risk).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The FNK prosthesis for Asians achieved excellent mid- to long-term survivorship and clinical results.</p
Expression of chemokine receptors on peripheral blood lymphocytes in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role of different chemokine receptors in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been extensively investigated; however, little is known about the difference in the role of chemokine receptors between the pathogenesis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and MS. Therefore, we examined the expression of chemokine receptors on peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in MS and NMO.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used flow cytometry to analyse lymphocyte subsets in 12 patients with relapsing NMO, 24 with relapsing-remitting MS during relapse, 3 with NMO and 5 with MS during remission.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Compared with healthy controls (HC), the percentage of lymphocytes in white blood cells was significantly lower in NMO and MS patients. The percentage of T cells expressing CD4+CD25+ and CD4+CD45RO+ was higher, while that of CD4+CC chemokine receptor (CCR)3+ (T helper 2, Th2) was significantly lower in MS patients than in HC. The ratios of CD4+CXC chemokine receptors (CXCR)3+/CD4+CCR3+ (Th1/Th2) and CD8+CXCR3+/CD8+CCR4+ (T cytotoxic 1, Tc1/Tc2) were higher in MS patients than in HC. The percentage of CD8+CXCR3+ T cell (Tc1) and CD4+CXCR3+ T cell (Th1) decreased significantly during remission in MS patients (<it>P <</it>0.05). No significant differences were identified in the expression of the chemokine receptors on PBL in NMO patients compared with MS patients and HC.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Th1 dominance of chemokine receptors on blood T cells and the correlation between CXCR3+ T cell (Th1 and Tc1) and disease activity in MS patients were confirmed by analysing chemokines receptors on PBL. In contrast, deviation in the Th1/Th2 balance was not observed in NMO patients.</p
