SemEval-2010 Task 17: All-words Word Sense Disambiguation on a Specific Domain

    Get PDF
Domain portability and adaptation of NLP components and Word Sense Disambiguation systems present new challenges. The difficulties found by supervised systems to adapt might change the way we assess the strengths and weaknesses of supervised and knowledge-based WSD systems. Unfortunately, all existing evaluation datasets for specific domains are lexical-sample corpora. This task presented all-words datasets on the environment domain for WSD in four languages (Chinese, Dutch, English, Italian). 11 teams participated, with supervised and knowledge-based systems, mainly in the English dataset. The results show that in all languages the participants where able to beat the most frequent sense heuristic as estimated from general corpora. The most successful approaches used some sort of supervision in the form of hand-tagged examples from the domain

Cornetto: a combinatorial lexical semantic database for Dutch

    No full text
A semantic lexicon is an essential resource for language technology that enables applications to abstract from textual to conceptual representations and to deal with the meaning of a language. Cornetto is such a semantic database for Dutch that was created by merging the semantic structure of two existing lexical databases that have complementary information. The databases also represent two different perspectives on lexical semantics: a word-to-meaning view and a meaning-to-word view. The Cornetto database is unique in that it maintains both views in a single harmonized database. As such, it is a very rich database providing the combined information from both for a large set of words (over 92K lemmas and 120K meanings) but it is also informative in that it shows the implications of both approaches. The database is further linked to external semantic databases, such as the English WordNet and the SUMO ontology. Finally, the project yielded tools to automatically extend the database with more relations and to acquire new words and concepts for a specific domain.status: publishe
