l W nu production at CLIC: a window to TeV scale non-decoupled neutrinos
We discuss single heavy neutrino production e+ e- -> N nu -> l W nu, l = e,
mu, tau, at a future high energy collider like CLIC, with a centre of mass
energy of 3 TeV. This process could allow to detect heavy neutrinos with masses
of 1-2 TeV if their coupling to the electron V_eN is in the range 0.004-0.01.
We study the dependence of the limits on the heavy neutrino mass and emphasise
the crucial role of lepton flavour in the discovery of a positive signal at
CLIC energy. We present strategies to determine heavy neutrino properties once
they are discovered, namely their Dirac or Majorana character and the size and
chirality of their charged current couplings. Conversely, if no signal is
found, the bound V_eN < 0.002-0.006 would be set for masses of 1-2 TeV,
improving the present limit up to a factor of 30. We also extend previous work
examining in detail the flavour and mass dependence of the corresponding limits
at ILC, as well as the determination of heavy neutrino properties if they are

Large extra dimension effects in Higgs boson production at linear colliders and Higgs factories
In the framework of quantum gravity propagating in large extra dimensions,
the effects of virtual Kaluza-Klein graviton and graviscalar interference with
Higgs boson production amplitudes are computed at linear colliders and Higgs
factories. The interference of the almost-continuous spectrum of the KK
gravitons with the standard model resonant amplitude is finite and predictable
in terms of the fundamental D-dimensional Plank scale M_D and the number of
extra dimensions \delta. We find that, for M_D ~ 1 TeV and \delta=2, effects of
the order of a few percent could be detected for heavy Higgs bosons (m_H>500
GeV) in Higgs production both via WW fusion in e^+e^- colliders and at
\mu^+\mu^- Higgs-boson factories.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures ; a few comments and references added ; version

Sudakov Electroweak effects in transversely polarized beams
We study Standard Model electroweak radiative corrections for fully inclusive
observables with polarized fermionic beams. Our calculations are relevant in
view of the possibility for Next Generation Linear colliders of having
transversely and/or longitudinally polarized beams. The case of initial
transverse polarization is particularly interesting because of the interplay of
infrared/collinear logarithms of different origins, related both to the
nonabelian SU(2) and abelian U(1) sectors. The Standard model effects turn out
to be in the 10% range at the TeV scale, therefore particularly relevant in
order to disentangle possible New Physics effects.Comment: 5 pages,4 figure
Aspects of CP violation in the HZZ coupling at the LHC
We examine the CP-conserving (CPC) and CP-violating (CPV) effects of a
general HZZ coupling through a study of the process H -> ZZ* -> 4 leptons at
the LHC. We construct asymmetries that directly probe these couplings. Further,
we present complete analytical formulae for the angular distributions of the
decay leptons and for some of the asymmetries. Using these we have been able to
identify new observables which can provide enhanced sensitivity to the CPV coupling. We also explore probing CP violation through shapes of
distributions in different kinematic variables, which can be used for Higgs

Anaphylaxis to hyperallergenic functional foods
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Food allergy can cause life threatening reactions. Currently, patients with severe food allergy are advised to avoid foods which provoke allergic reactions. This has become increasingly difficult as food proteins are being added to a broader range of consumer products.</p> <p>Patients and methods</p> <p>Here we describe our investigations into the allergenicity of a new drink when two cow's milk allergic children suffered anaphylaxis after consuming <it>Wh</it><sub><it>2</it></sub><it>ole</it><sup>®</sup>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our studies have shown that in comparison with cow's milk, <it>Wh</it><sub><it>2</it></sub><it>ole</it><sup>® </sup>contains at least three times the concentration of β-lactoglobulin. β-lactoglobulin is one of the dominant allergens in bovine milk.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These studies have shown that modern technology allows the creation of "hyperallergenic" foods. These products have the potential to cause severe reactions in milk allergic persons. Avoiding inadvertent exposure is the shared responsibility of allergic consumers, regulatory authorities and the food industry.</p
Flavor Changing Neutral Currents involving Heavy Quarks with Four Generations
We study various FCNC involving heavy quarks in the Standard Model (SM) with
a sequential fourth generation. After imposing , and constraints, we find can be enhanced by an order of magnitude to ,
while decays can reach , which are orders of magnitude
higher than in SM. However,these rates are still not observable for the near
future.With the era of LHC approaching, we focus on FCNC decays involving
fourth generation and quarks. We calculate the rates for
loop induced FCNC decays , as well as
t^\prime\to tZ,\tH, tg, t\gamma. If is of order , tree level decay would dominate, posing a challenge
since -tagging is less effective. For ,
would tend to dominate, while could also open for heavier
, leading to thepossibility of quadruple- signals via . The FCNC decays could still dominate if
is just above 200 GeV. For the case of , ingeneral would be dominant, hence it behaves like a heavy top. For both and
, except for the intriguing light case, FCNC decays are in the
range, and are quite detectable at the LHC.For a possible
future ILC, we find the associated production of FCNC ,
are below sensitivity, while
and can be better probed.Tevatron Run-II can still probe the
lighter or scenario. LHC would either discover the fourth generation

Silver and Gold Nanoparticles Alter Cathepsin Activity In vitro
Nanomaterials are being incorporated into many biological applications for use as therapeutics, sensors, or labels. Silver nanomaterials are being utilized for biological implants and wound dressings as an antiviral material, whereas gold nanomaterials are being used as biological labels or sensors due to their surface properties and biocompatibility. Cytotoxicity data of these materials are becoming more prevalent; however, little research has been performed to understand how the introduction of these materials into cells affects cellular processes. Here, we demonstrate the impact that silver and gold nanoparticles have on cathepsin activity in vitro. Cathepsins are important cellular proteases that are imperative for proper immune system function. We have selected to examine gold and silver nanoparticles due to the increased use of these materials in biological applications. This manuscript depicts how both of these types of nanomaterials affect cathepsin activity, which could impact the host's immune system and its ability to respond to pathogens. Cathepsin B activity decreases in a dose-dependent manner with all nanoparticles tested. Alternatively, the impact of nanoparticles on cathepsin L activity depends greatly on the type and size of the material
Detection and verification of malting quality QTLs using wild barley introgression lines
A malting quality quantitative trait locus (QTL) study was conducted using a set of 39 wild barley introgression lines (hereafter abbreviated with S42ILs). Each S42IL harbors a single marker-defined chromosomal segment from the wild barley accession ‘ISR 42-8’ (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum) within the genetic background of the elite spring barley cultivar ‘Scarlett’ (Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare). The aim of the study was (1) to verify genetic effects previously identified in the advanced backcross population S42, (2) to detect new QTLs, and (3) to identify S42ILs exhibiting multiple QTL effects. For this, grain samples from field tests in three different environments were subjected to micro malting. Subsequently, a line × phenotype association study was performed with the S42ILs in order to localize putative QTL effects. A QTL was accepted if the trait value of a particular S42IL was significantly (P < 0.05) different from the recurrent parent as a control, either across all tested environments or in a particular environment. For eight malting quality traits, altogether 40 QTLs were localized, among which 35 QTLs (87.5%) were stable across all environments. Six QTLs (15.0%) revealed a trait improving wild barley effect. Out of 36 QTLs detected in a previous advanced backcross QTL study with the parent BC2DH population S42, 18 QTLs (50.0%) could be verified with the S42IL set. For the quality parameters α-amylase activity and Hartong 45°C, all QTLs assessed in population S42 were verified by S42ILs. In addition, eight new QTL effects and 17 QTLs affecting two newly investigated traits were localized. Two QTL clusters harboring simultaneous effects on eight and six traits, respectively, were mapped to chromosomes 1H and 4H. In future, fine-mapping of these QTL regions will be conducted in order to shed further light on the genetic basis of the most interesting QTLs
Probing SUSY CP Violation in Two-Body Stop Decays at the LHC
We study CP asymmetries in two-body decays of top squarks into neutralinos
and sleptons at the LHC. These asymmetries are used to probe the CP phases
possibly present in the stop and neutralino sector of the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model. Taking into account bounds from experimental
electric dipole moment searches, we identify areas in the mSUGRA parameter
space where CP asymmetries can be sizeable and discuss the feasibility of their
observation at the LHC. As a result, potentially detectable CP asymmetries in
stop decays at the LHC are found, motivating further detailed experimental
