Analysis of the retailer value chain segment in five governorates

This study is the third output of the SDC-funded “Improving Employment and Income through Development of Egyptian Aquaculture” (IEIDEAS), a three-year project being jointly implemented by the WorldFish Center and CARE International in Egypt with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The aim of the study is to gather data on the retailer segment of the aquaculture value chain in Egypt, namely on the employment and market conditions of the women fish retailers in the five target governorates. In addition, this study provides a case study in Minya and Fayoum of the current income levels and standards of living of this target group. Finally, the study aims to identify the major problems and obstacles facing these women retailers and suggest some relevant interventions

In vitro and in vivo anthelmintic efficacy of condensed tannins extracted from the seeds of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) against Haemonchus contortus infection

This study was designed to examine in vitro and in vivo anthelmintic efficacy of condensed tannins (CT) extracted from seeds of Medicago sativa on Haemonchus contortus in sheep. CT's in vitro anthelmintic effect was assessed at a 300 μg/ml concentration compared with albendazole (reference drug) at 10 μg/ml. The results showed that CT had a nematocidal effect on H. contortus, and the cuticle of the adult worm appeared to be its initial target. For the in vivo experiment, nine 3-month-old helminths-free lambs were distributed into three groups. Group 1 (n=3) was challenged only as infected untreated controls; Group 2 (n=3) was treated with condensed tannin, and Group 3 (n=3) was treated with albendazole. Fecal and blood samples were collected every 3 days until the end of the experiment; for fecal egg count (FEC) and anti- H. contortus IgG titers determination, respectively. The lambs treated with the CT in G2 exhibited a pronounced decrease of mean FEC with great FECR% detected from the first-week post-treatment (PT) until the end of the experiment compared with G1 animals. The antibody levels gradually increased in G2 following the 2nd dose of CT treatment compared to other groups. A brilliant consistent relation between the elevation of IgG response and reduction of FEC was observed following the second booster dosing of the CT in G2. In conclusion, the CT evoked strongly in vitro and in vivo anthelmintic activity against H. contortus and could be used as a natural alternative treatment of high potency against haemonchosis in sheep

NTIRE 2020 Challenge on Spectral Reconstruction from an RGB Image

This paper reviews the second challenge on spectral reconstruction from RGB images, i.e., the recovery of whole- scene hyperspectral (HS) information from a 3-channel RGB image. As in the previous challenge, two tracks were provided: (i) a "Clean" track where HS images are estimated from noise-free RGBs, the RGB images are themselves calculated numerically using the ground-truth HS images and supplied spectral sensitivity functions (ii) a "Real World" track, simulating capture by an uncalibrated and unknown camera, where the HS images are recovered from noisy JPEG-compressed RGB images. A new, larger-than-ever, natural hyperspectral image data set is presented, containing a total of 510 HS images. The Clean and Real World tracks had 103 and 78 registered participants respectively, with 14 teams competing in the final testing phase. A description of the proposed methods, alongside their challenge scores and an extensive evaluation of top performing methods is also provided. They gauge the state-of-the-art in spectral reconstruction from an RGB image

Prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Joint Hypermobility Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Because of associated abnormalities affecting connective tissue in various organs including airways, hypermobility syndrome has been associated with high risk for the development sleep apnea. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and Marfan syndrome (MFS) represent the most common hypermobility syndromes; therefore, the purpose of this review was to examine the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in these populations. METHODS: All publications and poster presentations written in English found through August 2018 that describe the prevalence of sleep apnea among people with EDS or MFS were included. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were identified, 7 for EDS and 6 for MFS. A combined random prevalence rate of OSA across both populations was 48.9% (95% confidence interval 38.3-59.6), with a slightly higher rate of 59.7% (39.7-77.0) for MFS versus 39.4% (28.8-51.1) for EDS. However, a high degree of heterogeneity across studies was found in both groups (EDS group: Q = 28.6 and I2 = 79.0; MFS group: Q = 37.1 and I2 = 86.5). When directly compared to the general population, patients with EDS/MFS were on average six times more likely (odds ratio 6.28 [95% confidence interval 3.31-11.93], P < 0.001, Z = 5.61) to have a diagnosis of OSA. CONCLUSIONS: OSA is a previously underestimated EDS/MFS-related complication. The high prevalence of OSA might be the result of bony and soft-tissue abnormalities associated with these hypermobility syndromes. Untreated OSA is thought to worsen cardiovascular complications especially among those with MFS. Further research is needed to better delineate whether the prevalence of OSA is moderated by factors such as sex, body mass index, bony structure, and disorder subtype
