    New Insights into the Estimation of Reproduction Numbers during an Epidemic

    In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating the reproduction number Rt during an epidemic, as it represents one of the most used indicators to study and control this phenomenon. In particular, we focus on two issues. First, to estimate Rt , we consider the use of positive test case data as an alternative to the first symptoms data, which are typically used. We both theoretically and empirically study the relationship between the two approaches. Second, we modify a method for estimating Rt during an epidemic that is widely used by public institutions in several countries worldwide. Our procedure is not affected by the problems deriving from the hypothesis of Rt local constancy, which is assumed in the standard approach. We illustrate the results obtained by applying the proposed methodologies to real and simulated SARS-CoV-2 datasets. In both cases, we also apply some specific methods to reduce systematic and random errors affecting the data. Our results show that the Rt during an epidemic can be estimated by using the positive test data, and that our estimator outperforms the standard estimator that makes use of the first symptoms data. It is hoped that the techniques proposed here could help in the study and control of epidemics, particularly the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

    Dense and cellular zirconia produced by gel casting with agar: preparation and high temperature characterization

    A modified gel-casting process was developed to produce both dense and highly porous (40% volume) yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) using agar, a natural polysaccharide, as gelling agent. A fugitive phase, made of commercial polyethylene spheres, was added to the ceramic suspension before gelling to produce cellular ceramic structures. The characterization of the microstructural features of both dense and cellular ceramics was carried out by FEG SEM analysis of cross-sections produced by focused ion beam. The mechanical properties of the components were characterized at room temperature by nanoindentation tests in continuous stiffness measurement mode, by investigating the direct effect of the presence of residual microporosity. The presence of a diffuse residual microporosity from incomplete gel deaeration resulted in a decay of the bending strength and of the elastic modulus. The mechanical behavior of both dense and cellular zirconia (in terms of elastic modulus, flexural strength, and deformation at rupture) was investigated by performing four-point bending tests at the temperature of 1500°C

    Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is one of the most serious pulmonary complications of connective tissue diseases (CTDs) and it is characterized by a deep impact on morbidity and mortality. Due to the poor knowledge of CTD-ILD's natural history and due to the difficulties related to design of randomized control trials, there is a lack of prospective data about the prevalence, follow-up, and therapeutic efficacy. For these reasons, the choice of therapy for CTD-ILD is currently very challenging and still largely based on experts' opinion. Treatment is often based on steroids and conventional immunosuppressive drugs, but the recent publication of the encouraging results of the INBUILD trial has highlighted a possible effective and safe use of antifibrotic drugs as a new therapeutic option for these subjects. Aim of this review is to summarize the available data and recent advances about therapeutic strategies for ILD in the context of various CTD, such as systemic sclerosis, idiopathic inflammatory myopathy and Sjogren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, mixed connective tissue disease and undifferentiated connective tissue disease, and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features, focusing also on ongoing clinical trials
