Faria de Vasconcelos and the New Education in Natural Sciences

    Get PDF
Adolphe Ferrière says the School at Bierges-les-Wavre, founded by the Portuguese educator Faria de Vasconcelos, in 1912, fulfilled 28 of the 30 programmatic points of the New Education movement. Thus, the figure of Faria de Vasconcelos is established as a pillar of this movement of pedagogical renewal that swept the educational panorama like a hurricane in the Western world in the first quarter of the 20th century. In this article, we review a handbook that Faria de Vasconcelos produced in 1919 when he was director of the Normal School at Sucre in Bolivia. It is a guide to train teachers to teach natural sciences. To prepare this handbook, Faria de Vasconcelos reviews the best material that had been written in the field of science education in Europe and in the USA and selectively retains what best suits his pedagogical convictions, characterised by his firm commitment to the ideas of his friends and co-religionists at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute. This work is financed by national funds from FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., Portugal within the scope of the project UIDB/04312/2020

Faria de Vasconcelos and the Didactics of Natural Sciences in the contex of the First Republic

In the Preface that Adolphe Ferrière affixed to Faria de Vasconcelos' book, A New School in Belgium, from 1915, he says that the School of Bierges-les-Wavre that the distinguished Portuguese pedagogue founded in 1912 (and that he had to abandon in 1914 force by the outbreak of the First World War) fulfilled 28 of the 30 programmatic points of the New School. Thus, the figure of Faria de Vasconcelos is established as a pillar of this movement of pedagogical renewal that swept, like a hurricane, the educational panorama, on the scale of the so-called Western world, in the first quarter of the 20th century. Faria de Vasconcelos was not a theorist, researcher and scientist of education. But insofar as he was an executive, who in Belgium, Switzerland, Cuba and Bolivia, exercised management functions in educational establishments, published several texts and apologetic articles of the New School, advised politicians (he is the backbone of educational reform that in Portugal became known as the Camoesas Reform), he was one of the authors of this Copernican revolution. In this article, we review a handbook that Faria de Vasconcelos produced in 1919 when he was director of the Normal School de Sucre, in Bolivia, designed to guide the training of teachers for the teaching of natural sciences. Handbook that was later published in 1923 in Portugal, with the same intention, in the framework of a collection of Didactics coordinated by him. In preparing this handbook, Faria de Vasconcelos reviews the best that had been written in the field of science education (the work focuses on the teaching of Biology and Geology), in Europe and the United States of America to retain, selectively, which best suits his pedagogical convictions, marked by the firm, and convinced commitment to the ideas of his friends and co-religionists at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute in Geneva. Thus, this effort results in a syncretic text, but very useful to serve the agenda of updating primary school teachers, at its two levels, in terms of science education. This text also seeks to contextualize the work of Faria de Vasconcelos in the global framework of the reforms with which the First Republic sought to recover Portugal from the atavistic backwardness that characterized Portugal in the first quarter of the 20th century

Analyzing the process of production in logistics sugarcane mill: a case study

    Get PDF
The objective was to present and analyze the physical arrangement of logistics and production process plant in a sugarcane mill, in order to expose the processes involved, analyzing them more deeply and thus collaborate in a more efficient production. The relevance of this presentation is linked to the benefits that the plant and professionals can get through this work, enabling the development of methods and production alternatives. The research method used was case study based on interviews, on-site observation and document analysis, which was very appropriate as it could examine and cross checking. This work will allow a better understanding of the production process of the logistics of the plant in a sugarcane mill and working with suggestions and methods for more efficient production

In this phenomenographic qualitative research, the aim is to learn about the conceptions of university professors about the university. The study was carried out with 20 university professors: 10 from the School of Social Sciences and 10 from the School of Science and Technology of University of Évora with an average age of 54 years and over 20 years of professional activity. The data were collected through open questionnaires and then submitted to thematic and categorical content analysis. The conceptions of the university appear, in the voice of the teachers, centered on two main aspects. The first and more mentioned concerns the conception of the university as a space of production and diffusion of scientific knowledge, which refers to quality factors of higher education. The second brings out the conception of the university as a space of relationship with society together with underlying concerns for human development, cooperation, and the design of a more sustainable world

Fibrin adhesive derived from snake venom in periodontal surgery: histologicalanalysis

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: A new fibrin adhesive made of buffalo plasma-derived fibrinogen and a thrombin-like snake venom enzyme, has been successfully used to immobilize free gingival grafts. This case series histologically compared sutured grafts (control group) with others immobilized by using the fibrin adhesive (experimental group). CASE DESCRIPTION: The grafts were placed in the contralateral mandibular bicuspids of 15 patients, so that each subject received one treatment of each type. Five biopsies of each group were collected at 7, 14 and 45 days of healing, which were histologically and morphometrically analyzed as regards the relative volume density of the different connective tissue components. RESULTS: The sites in the control group presented a higher inflammatory cell density at 7 days and a tendency towards a lower collagen density. In the experimental group, the grafts had an appearance of more advanced healing. Tissue maturity characteristics progressed until 14 and 45 days, but no difference between groups could be noted at these times. Conclusions: Within the limits of the present study, it may be suggested that the alternative fibrin adhesive tested could represent an alternative to sutures in gingival grafts procedures.(FAPESP) São Paulo Research Foundatio

A new culture medium for the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae is proposed. It is based on the property common to Proteus and Providence of deaminating phenylalanine. In the culture medium here proposed the colonies of the mentioned microorganisms show a characteristic brown colour. Colonies of other Enterobacteriaceas show a quite different aspect.Um nôvo meio é proposto para o isolamento de enterobacteriáceas. Baseia-se na propriedade de desanimar a fenil-alanina que possuem tôdas as bactérias dos grupos Proteus e Providencia. As colônias dêstes microrganismos apresentam no meio descrito coloração marrom característica. As colônias das outras enterobacteriáceas, fermentadoras rápidas ou lentas e não fermentadoras da lactose, apresentam aspecto diferente

Learning and Teaching in Higher Education I
