Prevention of osteoporotic refractures in regional Australia
Objective: Clinical guidelines recommend that patients who sustain a minimal trauma fracture (MTF) should receive a bone mineral density (BMD) scan and bisphosphonate (or equivalent) therapy if diagnosed with osteoporosis. A pilot fracture liaison service (FLS) was implemented in regional NSW to improve adherence to the guidelines.
Design: Prospective cohort study with an historical control.
Setting: Primary care.
Participants: Control (n = 47) and cohort (n = 93) groups comprised patients consenting to interview who presented with a MTF to the major referral hospital 4 months before and 12 months after FLS implementation respectively.
Main outcome measures: Primary outcome measures were the rates of BMD scans and anti-osteoporotic medication initiation/review after MTF. Hospital admission data were also examined to determine death and refracture rates for all patients presenting during the study period with a primary diagnosis of MTF within 3 years of their initial fracture.
Results: Although there was no improvement in BMD scanning rates, the reported rate of medication initiation/review after fracture was significantly higher (P \u3c 0.05) in the FLS cohort. However, once adjusted for age, this association was not significant (P = 0.086). There was a lower refracture rate during the cohort period (P = 0.013), however, there were significantly more deaths (P = 0.035) within 3 years of initial fracture. When deaths were taken into account via competing risk regression, patients in the cohort period were significantly less likely to refracture than those in the control period (Hazard ratio = 0.576, P = 0.032).
Conclusions: A rurally based nurse-led FLS was associated with modest improvement after MTF. Consideration should be given to ways to strengthen the model of care to improve outcomes
Direct Measurement of Periodic Electric Forces in Liquids
The electric forces acting on an atomic force microscope tip in solution have
been measured using a microelectrochemical cell formed by two periodically
biased electrodes. The forces were measured as a function of lift height and
bias amplitude and frequency, providing insight into electrostatic interactions
in liquids. Real-space mapping of the vertical and lateral components of
electrostatic forces acting on the tip from the deflection and torsion of the
cantilever is demonstrated. This method enables direct probing of electrostatic
and convective forces involved in electrophoretic and dielectroforetic
self-assembly and electrical tweezer operation in liquid environments

Transcript expression of vesicular glutamate transporters in lumbar dorsal root ganglia and the spinal cord of mice â Effects of peripheral axotomy or hindpaw inflammation
Using specific riboprobes, we characterized the expression of vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT)1âVGLUT3 transcripts in lumbar 4â5 (L4â5) dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) and the thoracolumbar to lumbosacral spinal cord in male BALB/c mice after a 1- or 3-day hindpaw inflammation, or a 7-day sciatic nerve axotomy. Sham animals were also included. In sham and contralateral L4â5 DRGs of injured mice, VGLUT1-, VGLUT2- and VGLUT3 mRNAs were expressed in âŒ45%, âŒ69% or âŒ17% of neuron profiles (NPs), respectively. VGLUT1 was expressed in large and medium-sized NPs, VGLUT2 in NPs of all sizes, and VGLUT3 in small and medium-sized NPs. In the spinal cord, VGLUT1 was restricted to a number of NPs at thoracolumbar and lumbar segments, in what appears to be the dorsal nucleus of Clarke, and in mid laminae IIIâIV. In contrast, VGLUT2 was present in numerous NPs at all analyzed spinal segments, except the lateral aspects of the ventral horns, especially at the lumbar enlargement, where it was virtually absent. VGLUT3 was detected in a discrete number of NPs in laminae IIIâIV of the dorsal horn. Axotomy resulted in a moderate decrease in the number of DRG NPs expressing VGLUT3, whereas VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 were unaffected. Likewise, the percentage of NPs expressing VGLUT transcripts remained unaltered after hindpaw inflammation, both in DRGs and the spinal cord. Altogether, these results confirm previous descriptions on VGLUTs expression in adult mice DRGs, with the exception of VGLUT1, whose protein expression was detected in a lower percentage of mouse DRG NPs. A detailed account on the location of neurons expressing VGLUTs transcripts in the adult mouse spinal cord is also presented. Finally, the lack of change in the number of neurons expressing VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 transcripts after axotomy, as compared to data on protein expression, suggests translational rather than transcriptional regulation of VGLUTs after injury.Fil: Malet, Mariana. B-Mesons on the Transverse Lattice
We present results from a first study of -mesons that is based on a
transverse lattice formulation of light-front QCD. The shape of the Isgur-Wise
form factor is in very good agreement with experimental data. However, the
calculations yield rather large values for and compared

A Study of Heavy-Light Mesons on the Transverse Lattice
We present results from a study of meson spectra and structure in the limit
where one quark is infinitely heavy. The calculations, based on the framework
of light-front QCD formulated on a transverse lattice, are the first
non-perturbative studies of B-mesons in light-front QCD. We calculate the
Isgur-Wise form factor, light-cone distribution amplitude, the heavy-quark

Modulation of ascorbate-glutathione cycle by selenate and sulphate treatments in the seedlings of two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars
The trace element Selenium (Se) has a dual role in the growth and metabolism of plants. Low concentration of selenium (2 ?M selenate) promotes growth and counteracts the detrimental effects of abiotic stress as opposed to higher levels (?10 ?M) where it acts as a pro-oxidant. We focused on both individual and interactive influence of selenate and sulphate on thiol metabolism in seedlings of rice cultivars, satabdi and khitish. Inhibition of ascorbate contents by about 17% on an average, in the test seedlings treated with Se correlated with increased activities of ascorbate peroxidase and ascorbate oxidase in the cultivars. The glutathione levels also increased significantly, on an average by about 102% in roots and 74% in shoots of cv. satabdi compared to a rise, by about 49% in roots and 56% in shoots of cv. khitish. The elevated level of glutathione coincided with the stimulatory influence of Se on its regulatory enzymes. Concomitantly the levels of ?-tocopherol and phytochelatins were also induced in both the test cultivars. Increase in ?-tocopherol activity reached a maximum by about 47% in roots and 80% in shoots of cv. satabdi whereas it increased by about 36% in roots and about 64% in shoots of cv. khitish. Substantive increase in the levels of PC4 followed by PC2 and PC3 was also noted. The effects were found to be less conspicuous in shoots than in roots. Rice seedlings exposed to combined Se and 10mM sulphate treatments showed improved growth and development as a result of better thiol metabolism due to amelioration of the adverse effects caused by selenium alone on all the parameters tested
