Strabismus surgery complications: prevention and management
Journal ArticleStrabismus surgery is increasingly becoming a subspecialty domain, especially with cyclovertical muscles, restricted muscles, or reoperations. While is impossible to completely eliminate complications from strabimus surgery, it is possible to minimize their occurrence and significance by proper prevention and management. In general, the best policy for avoiding poor outcomes from complicated surgery is to perform procedures only for which one has been fully trained and has the necessary experience. This update will describe intraoperative and postoperative complications of strabismus surgery, emphasizing their prevention and management

Identifying factors controlling protein release from combinatorial biomaterial libraries via hybrid data mining methods
Polyanhydrides are a class of degradable biomaterials that have shown much promise for applications in drug and vaccine delivery. Their properties can be tailored for controlled drug release, drug/protein stability, and immune regulation (adjuvant effect). Identifying the relationship between the molecular structures of the polymers and the drug release kinetics profiles would help understand the release mechanism and aid in the accurate prediction of drug release and the rational design of polymer-based drug carrier systems. The molecular structure descriptors that had the most impact on the release kinetics were identified using a prediction/optimization data mining approach. Using this new approach for modeling nonlinear release kinetics behavior, we determined that the descriptors which had the greatest effect on the release kinetics were the number of backbone -COO- nonconjugated bonds, the number of aromatic rings, and the number of -CH 2- bonds
An optical coherence microscope for 3-dimensional imaging in developmental biology
An optical coherence microscope (OCM) has been designed and constructed to acquire 3-dimensional images of highly scattering biological tissue. Volume-rendering software is used to enhance 3-D visualization of the data sets. Lateral resolution of the OCM is 5 mm (FWHM), and the depth resolution is 10 mm (FWHM) in tissue. The design trade-offs for a 3-D OCM are discussed, and the fundamental photon noise limitation is measured and compared with theory. A rotating 3-D image of a frog embryo is presented to illustrate the capabilities of the instrument
