Effects of distance dependence of exciton hopping on the Davydov soliton

The Davydov model of energy transfer in molecular chains is reconsidered assuming the distance dependence of the exciton hopping term. New equations of motion for phonons and excitons are derived within the coherent state approximation. Solving these nonlinear equations result in the existence of Davydov-like solitons. In the case of a dilatational soliton, the amplitude and width is decreased as a results of the mechanism introduced here and above a critical coupling strength our equations do not allow for localized solutions. For compressional solitons, stability is increased.Comment: RevTeX 13 pages, 3 Postscript figure

Porto Alegre Consensus: Emergence and Evolution of the World Social Forum

    Get PDF
The World Social Forums and corresponding Forum movement marks a shift in transnational social movement methodology and solidarity. The Forums work to thicken linkages between global civil society actors, liberate communicative action, and horizontally integrate the struggle for global social justice. This study outlines a theoretical dialogue linking the concepts of transnational public spheres, political opportunity structures and cosmopolitan democracies to the Forums' process. The study also discusses the idea of a Porto Alegre Consensus evolving to challenge the economic logic of the Washington Consensus. This Consensus coalesces around agreed upon methodologies guiding the Forums development partly laid out in its Charter of Principles, but, more importantly, interpreted and re-negotiated by participants engaged in the Forums' many diverse manifestations. I contend that this reflexive process between Forum incarnations and the participatory assessment and corresponding revisions of Forum methodology is at the heart of the movement's success.Environmental Sciences Progra

Characterization of the Positivity of the Density Matrix in Terms of the Coherence Vector Representation

A parameterization of the density operator, a coherence vector representation, which uses a basis of orthogonal, traceless, Hermitian matrices is discussed. Using this parameterization we find the region of permissible vectors which represent a density operator. The inequalities which specify the region are shown to involve the Casimir invariants of the group. In particular cases, this allows the determination of degeneracies in the spectrum of the operator. The identification of the Casimir invariants also provides a method of constructing quantities which are invariant under {\it local} unitary operations. Several examples are given which illustrate the constraints provided by the positivity requirements and the utility of the coherence vector parameterization.Comment: significantly rewritten and submitted for publicatio

Generalized Euler Angle Paramterization for SU(N)

In a previous paper (math-ph/0202002) an Euler angle parameterization for SU(4) was given. Here we present the derivation of a generalized Euler angle parameterization for SU(N). The formula for the calculation of the Haar measure for SU(N) as well as its relation to Marinov's volume formula for SU(N) will also be derived. As an example of this parameterization's usefulness, the density matrix parameterization and invariant volume element for a qubit/qutrit, three qubit and two three-state systems, also known as two qutrit systems, will also be given.Comment: 36 pages, no figures; added qubit/qutrit work, corrected minor definition problems and clarified Haar measure derivation. The Effect of Climate Negotiation on Economic Justice in China

    Get PDF
Nowadays, climate change is an overwhelming threat to many people who live in the planet. As a result, countries signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and held rounds of negotiations to curb the increasing temperature. Under the principle of ‘common but differentiated responsibility’ in Kyoto Protocol, the responsibilities of developed countries were emphasized. This situation changed in 2007, when China overtook the United States to become the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world. China is criticized for being the culprit of the over-emitting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and is required to shoulder the main responsibility of cutting emissions in post-Kyoto era. However, these blames and requirements are unfair to china and hamper the economic justice of china. This paper is intended to analyze the impact of climate negotiations on economic justice of china from three different aspects: The right to development of China, Emission transfer and China’s export-oriented industry and Injustice China encounters under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Key words: Climate negotiation; Economic justice; China; United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; Developed countries; Greenhouse gas emission; Right to development; Export-oriented industry; Clean development mechanis

A Parametrization of Bipartite Systems Based on SU(4) Euler Angles

    Get PDF
In this paper we give an explicit parametrization for all two qubit density matrices. This is important for calculations involving entanglement and many other types of quantum information processing. To accomplish this we present a generalized Euler angle parametrization for SU(4) and all possible two qubit density matrices. The important group-theoretical properties of such a description are then manifest. We thus obtain the correct Haar (Hurwitz) measure and volume element for SU(4) which follows from this parametrization. In addition, we study the role of this parametrization in the Peres-Horodecki criteria for separability and its corresponding usefulness in calculating entangled two qubit states as represented through the parametrization.Comment: 23 pages, no figures; changed title and abstract and rewrote certain areas in line with referee comments.
