Four best practices for measuring news sentiment using âoff-the-shelfâ dictionaries: a large-scale p-hacking experiment
Linking event archives to news: a computational method for analyzing the gatekeeping process
Digital archives that document real-world events provide new opportunities for large-scale analyses of how news coverage represents reality. We present a method and open-source tool for linking event data to news articles, and demonstrate its application with an analysis of event and country level predictors of terrorism coverage in The Guardian from 2006 to 2018, using event data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD). Our method builds on established techniques for calculating document similarity, and we propose a novel strategy for fine-tuning parameters of the event matching algorithm that requires no manual coding. An online appendix is provided that documents all code to replicate our analysis and reuse our tools
Multiperspectival normative assessment: The case of mediated reactions to terrorism
This article provides a model for how communication phenomena can be normatively
assessed using multiple normative perspectives simultaneously. We exemplify the proce-
dure of multiperspectival normative assessment (MNA) using mediated reactions to ter-
rorism as our case in point. We first identify the normative challenges related to the
speed and substance of terrorism communication and the ways in which relations of
solidarity are communicatively constructed in reacting to terrorism. We link these chal-
lenges to four distinct normative theories that prioritize competing values for public dis-
course (freedom, community values, empowerment of the marginalized or constructive
debate). The resulting set of competing normative expectations, which help assess the
performance of terrorism communication, are eventually translated into recommenda-
tions for professional and non-professional communicators. In conclusion, we show
how MNA can help ground empirical scholarship in firmer theoretical foundations
while simultaneously demonstrating the usefulness of normative theory in analyzing a
wide range of issues

Uplifting manhood to wonderful heights? News coverage of the human costs of military conflict from world war I to Gulf war Two
Domestic political support is an important factor constraining the use of American military power around the world. Although the dynamics of war support are thought to reflect a cost-benefit calculus, with costs represented by numbers of friendly war deaths, no previous study has examined how information about friendly, enemy, and civilian casualties is routinely presented to domestic audiences. This paper establishes a baseline measure of historical casualty reporting by examining New York Times coverage of five major wars that occurred over the past century. Despite important between-war differences in the scale of casualties, the use of conscription, the type of warfare, and the use of censorship, the frequency of casualty reporting and the framing of casualty reports has remained fairly consistent over the past 100 years. Casualties are rarely mentioned in American war coverage. When casualties are reported, it is often in ways that minimize or downplay the human costs of war
The New Perspective challenge to Luther
New Perspective scholars challenge Protestant interpretations of Paul. It used to be the case, they state, that Protestants assumed that Paul was to Judaism as Luther was to Medieval Catholicism. Both men supposedly reacted against legalistic religions and championed grace-based faiths. However, in 1977, E.P. Sanders wrote Paul and Palestinian Judaism, arguing that Judaism is not a legalistic but a grace-based faith. Assuming that Sanders is correct, New Perspectivists claim that Paulâs and Lutherâs theologies and experiences were thus not parallel. Hence, Luther misunderstood Paul. Additionally, New Perspectivists challenge Protestant understandings of âjustificationâ. In New Perspective thought, Paul uses the term âjustificationâ primarily to describe how people, particularly Gentiles, join the church Christians without following Jewish ritual laws. âJustificationâ, then, does not describe how people âstay inâ the covenant and receive salvation, as Protestants think. However, this article maintains that while New Perspectivists have some knowledge of Paul and Judaism, they are much less knowledgeable regarding Luther, Medieval Catholicism and Lutherâs reaction to it. Greater scrutiny of these latter areas reveals large difficulties with New Perspective arguments. In addition, a review of relevant passages from Paulâs letters demonstrates that Protestants have not misunderstood Paulâs use of the term âjustificationâ. Many Pauline passages show that when Paul discusses justification he is also thinking about âstaying inâ, not just âgetting inâ the covenant
The Eco-Epidemiology of Pacific Coast Tick Fever in California
Rickettsia philipii (type strain âRickettsia 364Dâ), the etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever (PCTF), is transmitted to people by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Following the first confirmed human case of PCTF in 2008, 13 additional human cases have been reported in California, more than half of which were pediatric cases. The most common features of PCTF are the presence of at least one necrotic lesion known as an eschar (100%), fever (85%), and headache (79%); four case-patients required hospitalization and four had multiple eschars. Findings presented here implicate the nymphal or larval stages of D. occidentalis as the primary vectors of R. philipii to people. Peak transmission risk from ticks to people occurs in late summer. Rickettsia philipii DNA was detected in D. occidentalis ticks from 15 of 37 California counties. Similarly, non-pathogenic Rickettsia rhipicephali DNA was detected in D. occidentalis in 29 of 38 counties with an average prevalence of 12.0% in adult ticks. In total, 5,601 ticks tested from 2009 through 2015 yielded an overall R. philipii infection prevalence of 2.1% in adults, 0.9% in nymphs and a minimum infection prevalence of 0.4% in larval pools. Although most human cases of PCTF have been reported from northern California, acarological surveillance suggests that R. philipii may occur throughout the distribution range of D. occidentalis
