Limited tactile stimulus for prosthetic hands
Heat and pressure transducers mounted in prosthetic hand permit wearer to sense temperature and pressure to which hand is subjected
Tactile sensing means for prosthetic limbs
An improved prosthetic device characterized by a frame and a socket for mounting on the stump of a truncated human appendage is described. Flexible digits extend from the distal end and transducers located within the digits act as sensing devices for detecting tactile stimuli. The transducers are connected through a power circuit with a slave unit supported by a strap and fixed to the stump. The tactile stimuli detected at the sensing devices are reproduced and applied to the skin of the appendage in order to stimulate the sensory organs located therein

The Contribution of EUV from Clusters of Galaxies to the Cosmic Ionizing Background
Recent observations with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) suggest that
at least some clusters of galaxies are luminous sources of extreme ultraviolet
(EUV) radiation. It is not clear yet whether EUV emission is a general feature
of clusters; for the purposes of limiting the contribution to the background
radiation, we assume that it is true of most clusters. Assuming that the source
of the EUV emission is inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the Cosmic Microwave
Background photons by relativistic electrons, we construct a simple model for
the expected average emission from clusters as a function of their mass and the
redshift of interest. Press-Schechter theory is used to determine the abundance
of clusters of various masses as a function of redshift. We determine the
amount of background radiation produced by clusters. The total mean intensity,
spectrum, and the ionization rates for HI and HeII are determined at present
and at a variety of redshifts. Because clusters form by the merger of smaller
subclusters, the amount of EUV background radiation should be larger at present
than in the past. We compare our results to the ionizing background expected
from quasars. We find that while clusters do contribute a significant EUV
background, it is less than a percent of that expected from quasars.Comment: 13 pages in emulateapj5 style with 7 figures, accepted for

A Variational Assimilation Method for Satellite and Conventional Data: a Revised Basic Model 2B
A variational objective analysis technique that modifies observations of temperature, height, and wind on the cyclone scale to satisfy the five 'primitive' model forecast equations is presented. This analysis method overcomes all of the problems that hindered previous versions, such as over-determination, time consistency, solution method, and constraint decoupling. A preliminary evaluation of the method shows that it converges rapidly, the divergent part of the wind is strongly coupled in the solution, fields of height and temperature are well-preserved, and derivative quantities such as vorticity and divergence are improved. Problem areas are systematic increases in the horizontal velocity components, and large magnitudes of the local tendencies of the horizontal velocity components. The preliminary evaluation makes note of these problems but detailed evaluations required to determine the origin of these problems await future research
Student perceptions of their autonomy at University
© 2017, The Author(s). Learner autonomy is a primary learning outcome of Higher Education in many countries. However, empirical evaluation of how student autonomy progresses during undergraduate degrees is limited. We surveyed a total of 636 students’ self-perceived autonomy during a period of two academic years using the Autonomous Learning Scale. Our analysis suggests that students do not perceive themselves as being any more autonomous as they progress through University. Given the relativity of self-perception metrics, we suggest that our results evince a “red queen” effect. In essence, as course expectations increase with each year, each student’s self-perceived autonomy relative to their ideal remains constant; we term this the “moving goalpost” hypothesis. This article corroborates pedagogical literature suggesting that providing students with opportunities to act autonomously and develop confidence is key to developing graduates who have the independence that they need in order to be successful in the workplace
Introducing Variable Cell Shape Methods in Field Theory Simulations of Polymers
We propose a new method for carrying out field-theoretic simulations of
polymer systems under conditions of prescribed external stress, allowing for
shape changes in the simulation box. A compact expression for the deviatoric
stress tensor is derived in terms of the chain propagator, and is used to
monitor changes in the box shape according to a simple relaxation scheme. The
method allows fully relaxed, stress free configurations to be obtained even in
non trivial morphologies, and enables the study of morphology transitions
induced by external stresses
Long-term Effects of Tillage on the Retention and Transport of Soil Water
Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled soil. Determinations also were made of the effects of a 14-year addition of winter cover crops on a Dubbs-Dundee soil in continuous cotton production. In general, the winter cover crops tended to increase hydraulic conductivity~. ·porosity and organic matter content. These results indicated that the detrimental effects of long-term tillage on soil hydraulic properties could partially be overcome with the planting of these crops during the winter. However, the rate of improvement in the hydraulic properties was not dramatic
