    Tectonic setting of Martian volcanoes and deep-seated intrusives

    More than 50 volcanoes have been mapped on Mars, and recent geologic studies indicate structural evidence of deep seated intrusive bodies. Most volcanoes in the Tharsis region are volcanotectonic features; they have been associated with large scale tectonic and volcanic processes. They occur along complex systems of faults and grabens having a dominant northwest to southwest trend closely coincident with a great circle, which extends along 90 deg of arc from Tempe Patera to probable volcanic mountains near lat. 40 deg S, long. 150 deg. Deep seated intrusive bodies are also concentrated in the Tharsis region and are recognized mostly where faults have been deflected around their cores. The Elysium Mons-Amphitrites Patera volcanic alignment is subparallel to that of Tharsis but is longer, extending through about 120 deg of arc; it transects the dichotomy boundary and is radial to the Hellas basin. Volcanoes in the Tharsis region have the widest age range of all volcanoes on Mars, as determined by the size-frequency distribution of their craters having diameters of 2, 5, and 16 km

    Paleolakes and lacustrine basins on Mars

    The problems of how warm and wet Mars once was and when climate transitions may have occurred are not well understood. Mars may have had an early environment similar to Earth's that was conducive to the emergence of life. In addition, increasing geologic evidence indicates that water, upon which terrestrial life depends, has been present on Mars throughout its history. This evidence does not detract from the possibility that life may have originated on early Mars, but rather suggests that life could have developed over longer periods of time in longer lasting, more clement local environments than previously envisioned. It is suggested herein that such environments may have been provided by paleolakes, located mostly in the northern lowlands and probably ice covered. Such lakes probably would have had diverse origins. Glacial lakes may have occupied ice eroded hollows or formed in valleys obstructed by moraines or ice barriers. Unlike Earth, the Martian record of the origin and evolution of possible life may have not been erased by extensive deformation of the surface. Thus the basins that may have contained the paleolakes are potential sites for future biological, geological, and climatological study

    The Buffalo River was established by Congress in 1972 as the first National River in the United States and is one of the few remaining free-flowing streams in Arkansas . The Buffalo River flows through the three major physiographic provinces of northern Arkansas, originating in the higher elevations of the Boston Mountains, and flowing generally northeastward to cut through the Springfield and Salem Plateaus. It drops from approximately 2000 feet in the headwaters to around 500 feet above sea level at its confluence with the White River in Marion County. The Buffalo River is considered to be one of Arkansas\u27 greatest natural treasures; thus there is strong interest in protecting it from undue anthropogenic influences.     Abundance, distribution, and habitat of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) off California, 1990−2003

    Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are regularly seen off the U.S. West Coast, where they forage on jellyfish (Scyphomedusae) during summer and fall. Aerial line-transect surveys were conducted in neritic waters (<92 m depth) off central and northern California during 1990−2003, providing the first foraging population estimates for Pacific leatherback turtles. Males and females of about 1.1 to 2.1 m length were observed. Estimated abundance was linked to the Northern Oscillation Index and ranged from 12 (coefficient of variation [CV] =0.75) in 1995 to 379 (CV= 0.23) in 1990, averaging 178 (CV= 0.15). Greatest densities were found off central California, where oceanographic retention areas or upwelling shadows created favorable habitat for leatherback turtle prey. Results from independent telemetry studies have linked leatherback turtles off the U.S. West Coast to one of the two largest remaining Pacific breeding populations, at Jamursba Medi, Indonesia. Nearshore waters off California thus represent an important foraging region for the critically endangered Pacific leatherback turtle

    Structural basis for sequence specific DNA binding and protein dimerization of HOXA13.

    The homeobox gene (HOXA13) codes for a transcription factor protein that binds to AT-rich DNA sequences and controls expression of genes during embryonic morphogenesis. Here we present the NMR structure of HOXA13 homeodomain (A13DBD) bound to an 11-mer DNA duplex. A13DBD forms a dimer that binds to DNA with a dissociation constant of 7.5 nM. The A13DBD/DNA complex has a molar mass of 35 kDa consistent with two molecules of DNA bound at both ends of the A13DBD dimer. A13DBD contains an N-terminal arm (residues 324 - 329) that binds in the DNA minor groove, and a C-terminal helix (residues 362 - 382) that contacts the ATAA nucleotide sequence in the major groove. The N370 side-chain forms hydrogen bonds with the purine base of A5* (base paired with T5). Side-chain methyl groups of V373 form hydrophobic contacts with the pyrimidine methyl groups of T5, T6* and T7*, responsible for recognition of TAA in the DNA core. I366 makes similar methyl contacts with T3* and T4*. Mutants (I366A, N370A and V373G) all have decreased DNA binding and transcriptional activity. Exposed protein residues (R337, K343, and F344) make intermolecular contacts at the protein dimer interface. The mutation F344A weakens protein dimerization and lowers transcriptional activity by 76%. We conclude that the non-conserved residue, V373 is critical for structurally recognizing TAA in the major groove, and that HOXA13 dimerization is required to activate transcription of target genes

    The purposes and objectives of this study are: 1) to evaluate the application and performance characteristics of hot-melt plastic, pavement-striping materials which are presently prominent and known commercially as Catatherm and Perma-Line ; 2) to compare the performance of these materials with the performance of painted stripes applied and re-newed according to the current practices of the Kentucky Department of Highways; and 3) to evaluate the economics of these striping materials in terms of cost-per-pile per-day-of-useful-life.     The three-qubit space of entanglement types is the orbit space of the local unitary action on the space of three-qubit pure states, and hence describes the types of entanglement that a system of three qubits can achieve. We show that this orbit space is homeomorphic to a certain subspace of R^6, which we describe completely. We give a topologically based classification of three-qubit entanglement types, and we argue that the nontrivial topology of the three-qubit space of entanglement types forbids the existence of standard states with the convenient properties of two-qubit standard states.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, v2 adds a referenc

    Computing equilibrium states of cholesteric liquid crystals in elliptical channels with deflation algorithms

    We study the problem of a cholesteric liquid crystal confined to an elliptical channel. The system is geometrically frustrated because the cholesteric prefers to adopt a uniform rate of twist deformation, but the elliptical domain precludes this. The frustration is resolved by deformation of the layers or introduction of defects, leading to a particularly rich family of equilibrium configurations. To identify the solution set, we adapt and apply a new family of algorithms, known as deflation methods, that iteratively modify the free energy extremisation problem by removing previously known solutions. A second algorithm, deflated continuation, is used to track solution branches as a function of the aspect ratio of the ellipse and preferred pitch of the cholesteric.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
