Designing and implementing a new advanced level biology course.

    Get PDF
Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology is a new advanced level biology course currently being piloted from September 2002 in England with around 1200 students. This paper discusses the reasons for developing a new advanced biology course at this time, the philosophy of the project and how the materials are being written and the specification devised. The aim of the project is to provide an up-to-date course that interests students, is considered appropriate by teachers and other professionals in biology, and takes full advantage of modern developments in biology and in teaching

Alzheimer\u27s Disease Caregiver Burden: Does Resilience Matter?

    Get PDF
Caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease is especially challenging and impacts every aspect of the lives of the informal caregivers. Informal caregiving is defined as unpaid care provided by family or friends to people with a chronic illness or disability (Young & Newman, 2002). Caregiver burden involves the physical, psychological, social and emotional problems experienced by a caregiver of an impaired loved one (Gwyther & George, 2006). Alzheimer’s disease caregivers report more depression than their caregiving and non-caregiving peers, experience increased physical decline, and often experience financial challenges. Evidence suggests Alzheimer’s disease caregiver burden is a result of both care recipient and caregiver factors. Pearlin et al’s Stress Process model (1990) is widely used to examine triggers in caregiver burden. The model consists of antecedents, stressors, and outcomes. Few studies have examined moderators in the burden process in Alzheimer’s disease caregiving. Whether resilience accounts for variance in outcomes associated with caregiver burden is not addressed in the literature. Data from a convenience sample of Alzheimer’s disease caregivers (N=111) were examined for the purpose of exploring the moderating effect of resilience on the relationship between stressors and caregiver burden predictors. RESULTS: Resilience did not moderate the relationship between the caregiver stressors and caregiver burden. However, results indicated a relationship between resilience and caregiver burden. Specifically, as resilience increases, caregiver burden decreased. This finding highlights the importance of Alzheimer’s caregivers and implementing support and interventions that will increase their resilience

Implementation and Effectiveness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy in a Community Mental Health Service

    Get PDF
Objective: Although the efficacy of a number of psychotherapeutic interventions has been well established in tightly controlled, randomized trials, there remains a paucity of literature examining the effectiveness of these interventions in community practice settings. In light of this, the Australian Capital Territory Mental Health Services (Canberra, ACT) set out to investigate the effectiveness of an empirically supported psychotherapeutic intervention, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). The present study describes a pilot evaluation of the training programme for health professionals and the IPT treatment programme. Methods: Forty community mental health professionals participated in intensive IPT training. Clinicians who completed a course of supervision were asked to apply the treatment with non-psychotic acutely depressed patients. Measures of patients’ health outcomes were taken before and after treatment using a standardized outcome measure. Results: A total of 17 out of 21 patients who were selected completed a course of 12–16 weeks of IPT. The majority of the patients had a depression originating in the post-partum period. A comparison of pre- and posttreatment scores of treatment completers revealed a significant decrease in mean depression scores. Clinicians who completed a course of training and supervision found that they were able to confidently apply IPT in a clinical setting. Conclusions: Although there were a number of barriers and obstacles to the introduction of an evidenced-based treatment, the results are promising and demonstrate that IPT can be readily taught to experienced mental health professionals. Further study is required to determine the feasibility of IPT in other non-academic settings using larger sample sizes and homogenous groups of patients

Revisiting the Benefits of High School Accounting to Increase the Number of Accounting Majors

    Get PDF
In recent years, there has been concern surrounding the future supply of accounting graduates due to declining accounting program enrollment. This exploratory study investigates which undergraduate class year is likely better suited for increased efforts by accounting faculty to influence students’ decisions to major in accounting, particularly students who studied accounting in high school. Using variables from a prior study that conceptualized an integrative theoretical model based on social cognitive career theory and the theory of reasoned action, we examine the potential effect that precollege coursework in accounting might have on students’ personal interest, accounting technical skills self-efficacy, image of the accounting profession, and intent to major in accounting. Undergraduate business students enrolled in core business courses were surveyed and high school students participated in focus group discussions. Study results indicate differences between groups of students who did (did not) study accounting in high school and suggest freshmen year is influential towards intent to major in accounting

Interferons as Therapeutic Agents in Infectious Diseases

    Get PDF
This article explains the rationale for development of interferons as therapeutic agents, and describes commercial products available today. It also provides a summary of studies that have been performed with interferons for use as exogenous biological response modifiers in viral infections. Overall, the best data exist for treatment of viral hepatitis B and C, for which interferons are a cornerstone of therapy. Although infections with human papillomavirus and common cold viruses sometimes respond favorably to interferons, their outcomes are far from ideal. Finally, the role of interferons as vaccine adjuvants is still being explored but could be promising

Design of a recumbent seating system

    Get PDF
Future space shuttle missions presented by NASA might require the shuttle to rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir for the purpose of transporting astronauts back to earth. Due to the atrophied state of these astronauts, a special seating system must be designed for their transportation. The main functions of this seating system are to support and restrain the astronauts during normal reentry flight and to dampen some of the loading that might occur in a crash situation. Through research, the design team developed many concept variants for these functional requirements. By evaluating each variant, the concepts were eliminated until the four most attractive designs remained. The team used a decision matrix to determine the best concept to carry through embodiment. This concept involved using struts for support during reentry flight and a spring damper/shock absorber system to dampen crash landing loads. The embodiment design process consisted of defining the layout of each of the main functional components, specifically, the seat structure and the strut structure. Through the use of MCS/pal two, the design was refined until it could handle all required loads and dampen to the forces specified. The auxiliary function carriers were then considered. Following the design of these components, the complete final layout could be determined. It is concluded that the final design meets all specifications outlined in the conceptual design. The main advantages of this design are its low weight, simplicity, and large amount of function sharing between different components. The disassembly of this design could potentially present a problem because of time and size constraints involved. Overall, this design meets or exceeds all functional requirements
