    Dynamic Media: A need for the dynamic use of media to meet organizational goals

    This qualitative research study looks at how media can be used dynamically as a vehicle for study abroad students to create more meaningful engagements with the communities they visit. It takes a post-structural approach with an emphasis on how media supports participatory community-driven initiatives. It is the result of a 3-month participatory research process that looks at how media is emerging as a resource in some of the most remote communities in Nicaragua. The study was based on interviews with community stakeholders of the study abroad program, participatory observation, questionnaires, talks with community members, and the results of dynamic media tasks implemented by students. It found that media is reaching even the most rural of communities and has the potential to be an effective community resource. Media in itself does not benefit communities, but can be embraced as a tool that contributes to the success of community initiatives. By doing this it represents a dynamic way that students can participate and understand these initiatives more deeply

    The water-soluble terpolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) is an interesting and largely unstudied system. This new terpolymer has only recently appeared in the literature, with applications ranging from enhanced oil recovery [1] to controlled drug delivery [2]. Typically, existing studies focus on the final properties of the material (swelling behavior, thermal and mechanical stability, etc.), but investigating the terpolymerization kinetics is equally important [3]. The bulk polymer properties (and, by extension, properties relevant to the final application) depend on the terpolymer microstructure, therefore a clear understanding of the terpolymerization kinetics is invaluable.     The early 20th century saw an explosion in surgical expertise. Specialties dedicated to delicate organs such as the heart and vulnerable populations, like children, were in their infancy. Dr. William E. Ladd, the father of pediatric surgery, founded the first dedicated department of pediatric surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital in 1910. At the time, attempts at cardiac surgery almost universally ended in death of the patient. The first successful surgical treatment of the cardiac valves would not occur for another 15 years, and the great vessels would remain out of reach for decades more. Dr. Robert E. Gross, the shy and humble heir to the greats of this epoch, would push these embryonic fields into the modern era and train a generation of surgeons to face countless new challenges (Fig. 1)

    Molecular ion trap-depletion spectroscopy of BaCl+^+

    We demonstrate a simple technique for molecular ion spectroscopy. BaCl+^+ molecular ions are trapped in a linear Paul trap in the presence of a room-temperature He buffer gas and photodissociated by driving an electronic transition from the ground X1Σ+^1\Sigma^+ state to the repulsive wall of the A1Π^1\Pi state. The photodissociation spectrum is recorded by monitoring the induced trap loss of BaCl+^+ ions as a function of excitation wavelength. Accurate molecular potentials and spectroscopic constants are determined. Comparison of the theoretical photodissociation cross-sections with the measurement shows excellent agreement. This study represents the first spectroscopic data for BaCl+^+ and an important step towards the production of ultracold ground-state molecular ions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    The one-mode projecting is extensively used to compress the bipartite networks. Since the one-mode projection is always less informative than the bipartite representation, a proper weighting method is required to better retain the original information. In this article, inspired by the network-based resource-allocation dynamics, we raise a weighting method, which can be directly applied in extracting the hidden information of networks, with remarkably better performance than the widely used global ranking method as well as collaborative filtering.
