    Quarkonium production in A-A and p-A collisions

    Thirty years ago, the suppression of quarkonium production in heavy-ion collisions was first proposed as an unambiguous signature for the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma. Recent results from the LHC run 2 have led to an unprecedented level of precision on this observable and, together with new data from RHIC, are providing an accurate picture of the influence of the medium created in nuclear collisions on the various charmonium (J/ψ\psi, ψ\psi(2S)) and bottomonium (Υ(1S)\Upsilon(1S), Υ(2S)\Upsilon(2S), Υ(3S)\Upsilon(3S)) states, studied via their decay into lepton pairs.     Heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider: a review of the results from Run 1

    We present an overview of the results obtained in pPb and PbPb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 1. We first discuss the results for global characteristics: cross sections, hadron multiplicities, azimuthal asymmetries, correlations at low transverse momentum, hadrochemistry, and femtoscopy. We then review hard and electromagnetic probes: particles with high transverse momentum, jets, heavy quarks, quarkonium, electroweak bosons and high transverse momentum photons, low transverse momentum photons and dileptons, and ultraperipheral collisions. We mainly focus on the experimental results, and present very briefly the main current theoretical explanations.Comment: 33 pages, 29 figure

    El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo establecer un nuevo paradigma basado en la participación activa de la Universidad Pública en el marco del Desarrollo Local, lo cual facilitará la planificación de las Autoridades Nacionales, Provinciales y Municipales en la elaboración, concertación, y ejecución de Programas de desarrollo local y/ o Regional. La posibilidad de contar con una Universidad Pública capaz de asumir el liderazgo que la sociedad en su conjunto está solicitando y necesitando, apunta a identificar cuáles son las capacidades que tiene cada componente de la misma, llámese empresario, artesano, agricultor, educador, funcionario público, etc. Luego de una introducción al tema, se analizan los siguiente conceptos: Paradigma actual del diseño de las políticas públicas argentinas, a lo cual sigue el paradigma propuesto. En dicho paradigma es fundamental el concepto de Municipio Productivo Integrado, la Universidad Pública como sinónimo de una Universidad para todos, lo cual se suma a la redefinición del concepto de territorio en la Univ. Pública y, por último se analizan las amenazas al modelo propuesto con las conclusiones respetcivas

    J/ψ\psi production in In-In and p-A collisions

    The NA60 experiment studies dimuon production in In-In and p-A collisions at the CERN SPS. We report recent results on \jpsi production, measured through its muon pair decay. As a function of centrality, we show that in In-In the \jpsi yield is suppressed beyond expectations from nuclear absorption. We present also for the first time results on \jpsi production in p-A collisions at 158 GeV, the same energy of the nucleus-nucleus data. For both p-A and In-In we show preliminary results on \psip suppression. Finally, we have studied the kinematical distributions of the \jpsi produced in In-In collisions. We present results on transverse momentum and rapidity, as well as on the angular distribution of the \jpsi decay products.Comment: 8 pages, Quark Matter 2006 conference proceeding

    Open-charm enhancement at FAIR?

    We have calculated the D-meson spectral density at finite temperature within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach that generates dynamically the Λc\Lambda_c (2593) resonance. We find a small mass shift for the D-meson in this hot and dense medium while the spectral density develops a sizeable width.     Thermal Dilepton Radiation at Intermediate Masses at the CERN-SpS

    We investigate the significance of thermal dilepton radiation in the intermediate-mass region in heavy-ion reactions at CERN-SpS energies. Within a thermal fireball model for the space-time evolution, the radiation from hot matter is found to dominate over hard 'background' processes (Drell-Yan and open charm) up to invariant masses of about 2 GeV, with a rather moderate fraction emerging from early stages with temperatures T175200T\simeq 175-200 MeV associated with deconfined matter. Further including a schematic acceptance for the NA50 experiment we find good agreement with the observed enhancement in the region 1.5 GeV~<Mμμ<<M_{\mu\mu}<~3 GeV. In particular, there is no need to invoke any anomalous open charm enhancement.Comment: 6 pages ReVTeX including 4 eps-figure

    We discuss current plans for experiments with ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions with heavy beams at LHC energy (s=5.5\sqrt{s} = 5.5 TeV/nucleon pair). Emphasis will be placed on processes which are unique to the LHC program.     Cosmic structures and gravitational waves in ghost-free scalar-tensor theories of gravity

    We study cosmic structures in the quadratic Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (qDHOST) model, which has been proposed as the most general scalar-tensor theory (up to quadratic dependence on the covariant derivatives of the scalar field), which is not plagued by the presence of ghost instabilities. We then study a static, spherically symmetric object embedded in de Sitter space-time for the qDHOST model. This model exhibits breaking of the Vainshtein mechanism inside the cosmic structure and Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time outside, where General Relativity (GR) can be recovered within the Vainshtein radius. We then look for the conditions on the parameters on the considered qDHOST scenario which ensure the validity of the Vainshtein screening mechanism inside the object and the fulfilment of the recent GW170817/GRB170817A constraint on the speed of propagation of gravitational waves. We find that these two constraints rule out the same set of parameters, corresponding to the Lagrangians that are quadratic in second-order derivatives of the scalar field, for the shift symmetric qDHOST.Comment: 16 page

    HPMA copolymer-phospholipase C and dextrin-phospholipase A2 as model triggers for polymer enzyme liposome therapy (PELT)

    ‘Polymer Enzyme Liposome Therapy’ (PELT) is a two-step anticancer approach in which a liposomal drug and polymer-phospholipase conjugate are administered sequentially to target the tumour interstitium by the enhanced permeability and retention effect, and trigger rapid, local, drug release. To date, however, the concept has only been described theoretically. We synthesised two polymer conjugates of phospholipase C (PLC) and A2 (PLA2) and evaluated their ability to trigger anthracycline release from the clinically used liposomes, Caelyx® and DaunoXome®. N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymer–PLC and a dextrin-PLA2 were synthesised and their enzymatic activity characterised. Doxorubicin release from polyethyleneglycol-coated (PEGylated) Caelyx® was relatively slow (<20%, 60 min), whereas daunomycin was rapidly released from non-PEGylated DaunoXome® (∼87%) by both enzymes. Incubation with dextrin–PLA2 triggered significantly less daunomycin release than HPMA copolymer-PLC, but when dextrin-PLA2 was pre-incubated with α-amylase, the rate of daunomycin release increased. DaunoXome®’s diameter increased in the presence of PLA2, while Caelyx®’s diameter was unaffected by free or conjugated PLA2. Dextrin–PLA2 potentiated the cytotoxicity of DaunoXome® to MCF-7 cells to a greater extent than free PLA2, while combining dextrin–PLA2 with Caelyx® resulted in antagonism, even in the presence of α-amylase, presumably due to steric hindrance by PEG.
