System design and performance of earth/lunar horizon sensor BEC project 3744
An infrared horizon sensor system has been designed which is capable of searching over a wide field for the edges of a planet and, upon locating such edges, stations itself in a position which provides signals which identify the local vertical to the planet. In this fixed attitude it requires no continuous mechanical movement and operates with a minimum utilization of power. The system is thus capable of providing a high degree of accuracy when used for local vertical determination in orbits around the earth, the moon, or other planets. A detailed description of the design and operating features of the horizon scanner is given and the evaluation test data which have been completed are presented
The Loss Rank Principle for Model Selection
We introduce a new principle for model selection in regression and
classification. Many regression models are controlled by some smoothness or
flexibility or complexity parameter c, e.g. the number of neighbors to be
averaged over in k nearest neighbor (kNN) regression or the polynomial degree
in regression with polynomials. Let f_D^c be the (best) regressor of complexity
c on data D. A more flexible regressor can fit more data D' well than a more
rigid one. If something (here small loss) is easy to achieve it's typically
worth less. We define the loss rank of f_D^c as the number of other
(fictitious) data D' that are fitted better by f_D'^c than D is fitted by
f_D^c. We suggest selecting the model complexity c that has minimal loss rank
(LoRP). Unlike most penalized maximum likelihood variants (AIC,BIC,MDL), LoRP
only depends on the regression function and loss function. It works without a
stochastic noise model, and is directly applicable to any non-parametric
regressor, like kNN. In this paper we formalize, discuss, and motivate LoRP,
study it for specific regression problems, in particular linear ones, and
compare it to other model selection schemes.Comment: 16 page
Image interpolation using Shearlet based iterative refinement
This paper proposes an image interpolation algorithm exploiting sparse
representation for natural images. It involves three main steps: (a) obtaining
an initial estimate of the high resolution image using linear methods like FIR
filtering, (b) promoting sparsity in a selected dictionary through iterative
thresholding, and (c) extracting high frequency information from the
approximation to refine the initial estimate. For the sparse modeling, a
shearlet dictionary is chosen to yield a multiscale directional representation.
The proposed algorithm is compared to several state-of-the-art methods to
assess its objective as well as subjective performance. Compared to the cubic
spline interpolation method, an average PSNR gain of around 0.8 dB is observed
over a dataset of 200 images
GEMINI: A Generic Multi-Modal Natural Interface Framework for Videogames
In recent years videogame companies have recognized the role of player
engagement as a major factor in user experience and enjoyment. This encouraged
a greater investment in new types of game controllers such as the WiiMote, Rock
Band instruments and the Kinect. However, the native software of these
controllers was not originally designed to be used in other game applications.
This work addresses this issue by building a middleware framework, which maps
body poses or voice commands to actions in any game. This not only warrants a
more natural and customized user-experience but it also defines an
interoperable virtual controller. In this version of the framework, body poses
and voice commands are respectively recognized through the Kinect's built-in
cameras and microphones. The acquired data is then translated into the native
interaction scheme in real time using a lightweight method based on spatial
restrictions. The system is also prepared to use Nintendo's Wiimote as an
auxiliary and unobtrusive gamepad for physically or verbally impractical
commands. System validation was performed by analyzing the performance of
certain tasks and examining user reports. Both confirmed this approach as a
practical and alluring alternative to the game's native interaction scheme. In
sum, this framework provides a game-controlling tool that is totally

On Lorentz invariance and supersymmetry of four particle scattering amplitudes in orbifold sigma model
The supersymmetric orbifold sigma model is expected to describe the
IR limit of the Matrix string theory. In the framework of the model the type
IIA string interaction is governed by a vertex which was recently proposed by
R.Dijkgraaf, E.Verlinde and H.Verlinde. By using this interaction vertex we
derive all four particle scattering amplitudes directly from the orbifold model

Nodal Structure of Superconductors with Time-Reversal Invariance and Z2 Topological Number
A topological argument is presented for nodal structures of superconducting
states with time-reversal invariance. A generic Hamiltonian which describes a
quasiparticle in superconducting states with time-reversal invariance is
derived, and it is shown that only line nodes are topologically stable in
single-band descriptions of superconductivity. Using the time-reversal
symmetry, we introduce a real structure and define topological numbers of line
nodes. Stability of line nodes is ensured by conservation of the topological
numbers. Line nodes in high-Tc materials, the polar state in p-wave paring and
mixed singlet-triplet superconducting states are examined in detail.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Kaluza-Klein electrically charged black branes in M-theory
We present a class of Kaluza-Klein electrically charged black p-brane
solutions of ten-dimensional, type IIA superstring theory. Uplifting to eleven
dimensions these solutions are studied in the context of M-theory. They can be
interpreted either as a p+1 extended object trapped around the eleventh
dimension along which momentum is flowing or as a boost of the following
backgrounds: the Schwarzschild black (p+1)-brane or the product of the
(10-p)-dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild manifold with the (p+1)-dimensional

A Quantitative Occam's Razor
This paper derives an objective Bayesian "prior" based on considerations of
entropy/information. By this means, it produces a quantitative measure of
goodness of fit (the "H-statistic") that balances higher likelihood against the
number of fitting parameters employed. The method is intended for
phenomenological applications where the underlying theory is uncertain or
unknown.
For example, it can help decide whether the large angle anomalies in the CMB
data should be taken seriously.
