Bayesian methods of astronomical source extraction
We present two new source extraction methods, based on Bayesian model
selection and using the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). The first is a
source detection filter, able to simultaneously detect point sources and
estimate the image background. The second is an advanced photometry technique,
which measures the flux, position (to sub-pixel accuracy), local background and
point spread function. We apply the source detection filter to simulated
Herschel-SPIRE data and show the filter's ability to both detect point sources
and also simultaneously estimate the image background. We use the photometry
method to analyse a simple simulated image containing a source of unknown flux,
position and point spread function; we not only accurately measure these
parameters, but also determine their uncertainties (using Markov-Chain Monte
Carlo sampling). The method also characterises the nature of the source
(distinguishing between a point source and extended source). We demonstrate the
effect of including additional prior knowledge. Prior knowledge of the point
spread function increase the precision of the flux measurement, while prior
knowledge of the background has onlya small impact. In the presence of higher
noise levels, we show that prior positional knowledge (such as might arise from
a strong detection in another waveband) allows us to accurately measure the
source flux even when the source is too faint to be detected directly. These
methods are incorporated in SUSSEXtractor, the source extraction pipeline for
the forthcoming Akari FIS far-infrared all-sky survey. They are also
implemented in a stand-alone, beta-version public tool that can be obtained at

Neutron-star merger ejecta as obstacles to neutrino-powered jets of gamma-ray bursts
We present the first special relativistic, axisymmetric hydrodynamic
simulations of black hole-torus systems (approximating general relativistic
gravity) as remnants of binary-neutron star (NS-NS) and neutron star-black hole
(NS-BH) mergers, in which the viscously driven evolution of the accretion torus
is followed with self-consistent energy-dependent neutrino transport and the
interaction with the cloud of dynamical ejecta expelled during the NS-NS
merging is taken into account. The modeled torus masses, BH masses and spins,
and the ejecta masses, velocities, and spatial distributions are adopted from
relativistic merger simulations. We find that energy deposition by neutrino
annihilation can accelerate outflows with initially high Lorentz factors along
polar low-density funnels, but only in mergers with extremely low baryon
pollution in the polar regions. NS-BH mergers, where polar mass ejection during
the merging phase is absent, provide sufficiently baryon-poor environments to
enable neutrino-powered, ultrarelativistic jets with terminal Lorentz factors
above 100 and considerable dynamical collimation, favoring short gamma-ray
bursts (sGRBs), although their typical energies and durations might be too
small to explain the majority of events. In the case of NS-NS mergers, however,
neutrino emission of the accreting and viscously spreading torus is too short
and too weak to yield enough energy for the outflows to break out from the
surrounding ejecta shell as highly relativistic jets. We conclude that neutrino
annihilation alone cannot power sGRBs from NS-NS mergers.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, minor revisions compared to original version,

Constraints on the BPS Spectrum of N = 2, D = 4 Theories with A-D-E Flavor Symmetry
BPS states of N=2, D=4 Super Yang-Mills theories with ADE flavor symmetry
arise as junctions joining a D3-brane to a set of 7-branes defining the
enhanced flavor algebra. We show that the familiar BPS spectrum of SU(2)
theories with N_f <= 4 is simply given by the set of junctions whose
self-intersection is bounded below as required by supersymmetry. This
constraint, together with the relations between junction and weight lattices,
is used to establish the appearance of arbitrarily large flavor representations
for the case of D_{n>=5} and E_n symmetries. Such representations are required
by consistency with decoupling down to smaller flavor symmetries.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figure; references adde

Bi-Linear Homogeneity Enforced Calibration for Pipelined ADCs
Pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are key enablers in many
state-of-the-art signal processing systems with high sampling rates. In
addition to high sampling rates, such systems often demand a high linearity. To
meet these challenging linearity requirements, ADC calibration techniques were
heavily investigated throughout the past decades. One limitation in ADC
calibration is the need for a precisely known test signal. In our previous
work, we proposed the homogeneity enforced calibration (HEC) approach, which
circumvents this need by consecutively feeding a test signal and a scaled
version of it into the ADC. The calibration itself is performed using only the
corresponding output samples, such that the test signal can remain unknown. On
the downside, the HEC approach requires the option to accurately scale the test
signal, impeding an on-chip implementation. In this work, we provide a thorough
analysis of the HEC approach, including the effects of an inaccurately scaled
test signal. Furthermore, the bi-linear homogeneity enforced calibration
(BL-HEC) approach is introduced and suggested to account for an inaccurate
scaling and, therefore, to facilitate an on-chip implementation. In addition, a
comprehensive stability and convergence analysis of the BL-HEC approach is
carried out. Finally, we verify our concept with simulations.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
