The Effectiveness of Business Codes: A Critical Examination of Existing Studies and the Development of an Integrated Research Model
Business codes are a widely used management instrument. Research into the effectiveness of business codes has, however, produced conflicting results. The main reasons for the divergent findings are: varying definitions of key terms; deficiencies in the empirical data and methodologies used; and a lack of theory. In this paper, we propose an integrated research model and suggest directions for future research.Ethics;Business codes;Effectiveness;Organization

New Detections of Optical Emission from Kiloparsec-scale Quasar Jets
We report initial results from the detection of optical emission in the
arcsecond-scale radio jets of two quasars utilizing images from the {\it Hubble
Space Telescope} archive. The optical emission has a very knotty appearance and
is consistent with synchrotron emission from highly relativistic electrons in
the jet. Combining these observations with those of previously reported
features in other quasars, an emerging trend appears to be that their
radio-to-optical spectral indices are steeper than those of similar features in
jets of lower power radio sources.Comment: 4 pgs, 2 figs, Proc of The Physics of Relativistic Jets in the

Electron-hydrogen scattering in Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equation approach
Electron-hydrogen scattering is studied in the Faddeev-Merkuriev integral
equation approach. The equations are solved by using the Coulomb-Sturmian
separable expansion technique. We present - and -wave scattering and
reactions cross sections up to the threshold.Comment: 2 eps figure
In vivo and in vitro proinflammatory effects of particulate air pollution (PM10).
Epidemiologic studies have reported associations between fine particulate air pollution, especially particles less than 10 mm in diameter (PM10), and the development of exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the mechanism is unknown. We tested our hypothesis that PM10 induces oxidant stress, causing inflammation and injury to airway epithelium. We assessed the effects of intratracheal instillation of PM10 in rat lungs. The influx of inflammatory cells was measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Airspace epithelial permeability was assessed as total protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in vivo. The oxidant properties of PM10 were determined by their ability to cause changes in reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). We also compared the effects of PM10 with those of fine (CB) and ultrafine (ufCB) carbon black particles. Six hours after intratracheal instillation of PM10, we noted an influx of neutrophils (up to 15% of total BAL cells) in the alveolar space, increased epithelial permeability, an increase in total protein in BALF from 0.39 +/- 0.01 to 0.62 +/- 0.01 mg/ml (mean +/- SEM) and increased lactate dehydrogenase concentrations in BALF. An even greater inflammatory response was observed after intratracheal instillation of ufCB, but not after CB instillation. PM10 had oxidant activity in vivo, as shown by decreased GSH in BALF (from 0.36 +/- 0.05 to 0.25 +/- 0.01 nmol/ml) after instillation. BAL leukocytes from rats treated with PM10 produced greater amounts of nitric oxide, measured as nitrite (control 3.07 +/- 0.33, treated 4.45 +/- 0.23 mM/1 x 10(6) cells) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (control 21.0 +/- 3.1, treated 179.2 +/- 29.4 unit/1 x 10(6) cells) in culture than BAL leukocytes obtained from control animals. These studies provide evidence that PM10 has free radical activity and causes lung inflammation and epithelial injury. These data support our hypothesis concerning the mechanism for the adverse effects of particulate air pollution on patients with airway diseases
Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and color neutral quark matter: a variational approach
We investigate the vacuum realignment for chiral symmetry breaking and color
superconductivity at finite density in Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a
variational method. The treatment allows us to investigate simultaneous
formation of condensates in quark antiquark as well as in diquark channels. The
methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and
minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. Color and electric charge
neutrality conditions are imposed through introduction of appropriate chemical
potentials. Color and flavor dependent condensate functions are determined
through minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. The equation of state is
calculated. Simultaneous existence of a mass gap and superconducting gap is
seen in a small window of quark chemical potential within the model when charge
neutrality conditions are not imposed. Enforcing color and electric charge
neutrality conditions gives rise to existence of gapless superconducting modes
depending upon the magnitude of the gap and the difference of the chemical
potentials of the condensing quarks.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures,to appear in Phys. Rev.
Tactile Presentation of Network Data: Text, Matrix or Diagram?
Visualisations are commonly used to understand social, biological and other
kinds of networks. Currently, we do not know how to effectively present network
data to people who are blind or have low-vision (BLV). We ran a controlled
study with 8 BLV participants comparing four tactile representations: organic
node-link diagram, grid node-link diagram, adjacency matrix and braille list.
We found that the node-link representations were preferred and more effective
for path following and cluster identification while the matrix and list were
better for adjacency tasks. This is broadly in line with findings for the
corresponding visual representations.Comment: To appear in the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing

Dragon-kings: mechanisms, statistical methods and empirical evidence
This introductory article presents the special Discussion and Debate volume
"From black swans to dragon-kings, is there life beyond power laws?" published
in Eur. Phys. J. Special Topics in May 2012. We summarize and put in
perspective the contributions into three main themes: (i) mechanisms for
dragon-kings, (ii) detection of dragon-kings and statistical tests and (iii)
empirical evidence in a large variety of natural and social systems. Overall,
we are pleased to witness significant advances both in the introduction and
clarification of underlying mechanisms and in the development of novel
efficient tests that demonstrate clear evidence for the presence of
dragon-kings in many systems. However, this positive view should be balanced by
the fact that this remains a very delicate and difficult field, if only due to
the scarcity of data as well as the extraordinary important implications with
respect to hazard assessment, risk control and predictability.Comment: 20 page
