    Theoretical study of dark resonances in micro-metric thin cells

    We investigate theoretically dark resonance spectroscopy for a dilute atomic vapor confined in a thin (micro-metric) cell. We identify the physical parameters characterizing the spectra and study their influence. We focus on a Hanle-type situation, with an optical irradiation under normal incidence and resonant with the atomic transition. The dark resonance spectrum is predicted to combine broad wings with a sharp maximum at line-center, that can be singled out when detecting a derivative of the dark resonance spectrum. This narrow signal derivative, shown to broaden only sub-linearly with the cell length, is a signature of the contribution of atoms slow enough to fly between the cell windows in a time as long as the characteristic ground state optical pumping time. We suggest that this dark resonance spectroscopy in micro-metric thin cells could be a suitable tool for probing the effective velocity distribution in the thin cell arising from the atomic desorption processes, and notably to identify the limiting factors affecting desorption under a grazing incidence.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures theoretical articl

    Mesoscopic Cooperative Emission From a Disordered System

    We study theoretically the cooperative light emission from a system of N1N\gg 1 classical oscillators confined within a volume with spatial scale, LL, much smaller than the radiation wavelength, λ0=2πc/ω0\lambda_0=2\pi c/\omega_0. We assume that the oscillators frequencies are randomly distributed around a central frequency, ω0\omega_0, with some characteristic width, Ωω0\Omega\ll\omega_0. In the absence of disorder, that is Ω=0\Omega=0, the cooperative emission spectrum is composed of a narrow subradiant peak superimposed on a wide superradiant band. When Ω0\Omega\neq 0, we demonstrate that if NN is large enough, the subradiant peak is not simply broadened by the disorder but rather splits into a system of random narrow peaks. We estimate the spectral width of these peaks as a function of N,L,ΩN, L, \Omega, and λ0\lambda_0.     Random Resonators and Prelocalized Modes in Disordered Dielectric Films

    Areal density of disorder-induced resonators with a high quality factor, Q1Q\gg 1, in a film with fluctuating refraction index is calculated theoretically. We demonstrate that for a given kl>1kl>1, where kk is the light wave vector, and ll is the transport mean free path, when {\em on average} the light propagation is diffusive, the likelihood for finding a random resonator increases dramatically with increasing the correlation radius of the disorder.     Development of a compounded propofol nanoemulsion using multiple non-invasive process analytical technologies

    Propofol is the preferred anaesthetic for induction and maintenance of sedation in critically ill mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients. However, during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, regular supply chains could not keep up with the sudden increase in global demand, causing drug shortages. Propofol is formulated as an oil-in-water emulsion which is administered intravenously. This study explores the extemporaneous preparation of a propofol emulsion without specialized manufacturing equipment to temporally alleviate such shortages. A commercially available lipid emulsion (IVLE, SMOFlipid 20 %), intended for parenteral nutrition, was used to create a propofol loaded nanoemulsion via addition of liquid propofol drug substance and subsequent mixing. Critical quality attributes such as mean droplet size and the volume-weighted percentage of large-diameter (>5µm) droplets were studied. The evolution of droplet size and propofol distribution was monitored in situ and non-destructively, maintaining sterility, using Spatially Resolved Dynamic Light Scattering and Near Infrared Spectroscopy, respectively. Using response surface methodology, an optimum was found for a 4 % w/v propofol formulation with a ∼15 min mixing time in a flask shaker at a 40° shaking angle. This study shows that extemporaneous compounding is a viable option for emergency supply of propofol drug product during global drug shortages

    Resonant nonlinear magneto-optical effects in atoms

    In this article, we review the history, current status, physical mechanisms, experimental methods, and applications of nonlinear magneto-optical effects in atomic vapors. We begin by describing the pioneering work of Macaluso and Corbino over a century ago on linear magneto-optical effects (in which the properties of the medium do not depend on the light power) in the vicinity of atomic resonances, and contrast these effects with various nonlinear magneto-optical phenomena that have been studied both theoretically and experimentally since the late 1960s. In recent years, the field of nonlinear magneto-optics has experienced a revival of interest that has led to a number of developments, including the observation of ultra-narrow (1-Hz) magneto-optical resonances, applications in sensitive magnetometry, nonlinear magneto-optical tomography, and the possibility of a search for parity- and time-reversal-invariance violation in atoms.Comment: 51 pages, 23 figures, to appear in Rev.     How baseline, new-onset, and persistent depressive symptoms are associated with cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality in incident patients on chronic dialysis

    AbstractObjectiveDepressive symptoms are associated with mortality among patients on chronic dialysis therapy. It is currently unknown how different courses of depressive symptoms are associated with both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality.MethodsIn a Dutch prospective nation-wide cohort study among incident patients on chronic dialysis, 1077 patients completed the Mental Health Inventory, both at 3 and 12months after starting dialysis. Cox regression models were used to calculate crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality for patients with depressive symptoms at 3months only (baseline only), at 12months only (new-onset), and both at 3 and 12months (persistent), using patients without depressive symptoms at 3 and 12months as reference group.ResultsDepressive symptoms at baseline only seemed to be a strong marker for non-cardiovascular mortality (HRadj 1.91, 95% CI 1.26–2.90), whereas cardiovascular mortality was only moderately increased (HRadj 1.41, 95% CI 0.85–2.33). In contrast, new-onset depressive symptoms were moderately associated with both cardiovascular (HRadj 1.66, 95% CI 1.06–2.58) and non-cardiovascular mortality (HRadj 1.46, 95% CI 0.97–2.20). Among patients with persistent depressive symptoms, a poor survival was observed due to both cardiovascular (HRadj 2.14, 95% CI 1.42–3.24) and non-cardiovascular related mortality (HRadj 1.76, 95% CI 1.20–2.59).ConclusionThis study showed that different courses of depressive symptoms were associated with a poor survival after the start of dialysis. In particular, temporary depressive symptoms at the start of dialysis may be a strong marker for non-cardiovascular mortality, whereas persistent depressive symptoms were associated with both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality

    Interaction between sugar and abscisic acid signalling during early seedling development in Arabidopsis

    Sugars regulate important processes and affect the expression of many genes in plants. Characterization of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutants with altered sugar sensitivity revealed the function of abscisic acid (ABA) signalling in sugar responses. However, the exact interaction between sugar signalling and ABA is obscure. Therefore ABA deficient plants with constitutive ABI4 expression (aba2-1/35S::ABI4) were generated. Enhanced ABI4 expression did not rescue the glucose insensitive (gin) phenotype of aba2 seedlings indicating that other ABA regulated factors are essential as well. Interestingly, both glucose and ABA treatment of Arabidopsis seeds trigger a post-germination seedling developmental arrest. The glucose-arrested seedlings had a drought tolerant phenotype and showed glucose-induced expression of ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE3 (ABI3), ABI5 and LATE EMBRYOGENESIS ABUNDANT (LEA) genes reminiscent of ABA signalling during early seedling development. ABI3 is a key regulator of the ABA-induced arrest and it is shown here that ABI3 functions in glucose signalling as well. Multiple abi3 alleles have a glucose insensitive (gin) phenotype comparable to that of other known gin mutants. Importantly, glucose-regulated gene expression is disturbed in the abi3 background. Moreover, abi3 was insensitive to sugars during germination and showed sugar insensitive (sis) and sucrose uncoupled (sun) phenotypes. Mutant analysis further identified the ABA response pathway genes ENHANCED RESPONSE TO ABA1 (ERA1) and ABI2 as intermediates in glucose signalling. Hence, three previously unidentified sugar signalling genes have been identified, showing that ABA and glucose signalling overlap to a larger extend than originally thought

    We report on 3D time-domain parallel simulations of Anderson localization of light in inverted disordered opals displaying a complete photonic band-gap. We investigate dynamic diffusion processes induced by femtosecond laser excitations, calculate the diffusion constant and the decay-time distribution versus the strength of the disorder. We report evidence of the transition from delocalized Bloch oscillations to strongly localized resonances in self-starting laser processes.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
