Crystal structures and proton dynamics in potassium and cesium hydrogen bistrifluoroacetate salts with strong symmetric hydrogen bonds

    Get PDF
The crystal structures of potassium and cesium bistrifluoroacetates were determined at room temperature and at 20 K and 14 K, respectively, with the single crystal neutron diffraction technique. The crystals belong to the I2/a and A2/a monoclinic space groups, respectively, and there is no visible phase transition. For both crystals, the trifluoroacetate entities form dimers linked by very short hydrogen bonds lying across a centre of inversion. Any proton disorder or double minimum potential can be rejected. The inelastic neutron scattering spectral profiles in the OH stretching region between 500 and 1000 cm^{-1} previously published [Fillaux and Tomkinson, Chem. Phys. 158 (1991) 113] are reanalyzed. The best fitting potential has the major characteristics already reported for potassium hydrogen maleate [Fillaux et al. Chem. Phys. 244 (1999) 387]. It is composed of a narrow well containing the ground state and a shallow upper part corresponding to dissociation of the hydrogen bond.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure

Separation of suspended particles in microfluidic systems by directional-locking in periodic fields

We investigate the transport and separation of overdamped particles under the action of a uniform external force in a two-dimensional periodic energy landscape. Exact results are obtained for the deterministic transport in a square lattice of parabolic, repulsive centers that correspond to a piecewise-continuous linear-force model. The trajectories are periodic and commensurate with the obstacle lattice and exhibit phase-locking behavior in that the particle moves at the same average migration angle for a range of orientation of the external force. The migration angle as a function of the orientation of the external force has a Devil's staircase structure. The first transition in the migration angle was analyzed in terms of a Poincare map, showing that it corresponds to a tangent bifurcation. Numerical results show that the limiting behavior for impenetrable obstacles is equivalent to the high Peclet number limit in the case of transport of particles in a periodic pattern of solid obstacles. Finally, we show how separation occurs in these systems depending on the properties of the particles

Nonlinearly stacked low noise turbofan stator

    Get PDF
A nonlinearly stacked low noise turbofan stator vane having a characteristic curve that is characterized by a nonlinear sweep and a nonlinear lean is provided. The stator is in an axial fan or compressor turbomachinery stage that is comprised of a collection of vanes whose highly three-dimensional shape is selected to reduce rotor-stator and rotor-strut interaction noise while maintaining the aerodynamic and mechanical performance of the vane. The nonlinearly stacked low noise turbofan stator vane reduces noise associated with the fan stage of turbomachinery to improve environmental compatibility

New Topoisomerase Inhibitors:Evaluating the Potency of Gepotidacin and Zoliflodacin in Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Escherichia coli upon tolC Inactivation and Differentiating Their Efflux Pump Substrate Nature

    Get PDF
Inactivating tolC in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli with differing sequence types and quinolone resistance-determining mutations reveals remarkably potentiated activity of the first-in-class topoisomerase inhibitors gepotidacin and zoliflodacin. Differences between both structurally unrelated compounds in comparison to fluoroquinolones regarding the selectivity of E. coli RND (resistance-nodulation-cell division)-type transporters, efflux inhibitors, and AcrB porter domain mutations were demonstrated. The findings should reinforce efforts to develop efflux-bypassing drugs and provide AcrB targets with critical relevance for this purpose

Geometrical edge barriers and magnetization in superconducting strips with slits

We theoretically investigate the magnetic-field and current distributions for coplanar superconducting strips with slits in an applied magnetic field H_a. We consider ideal strips with no bulk pinning and calculate the hysteretic behavior of the magnetic moment m_y as a function of H_a due solely to geometrical edge barriers. We find that the m_y-H_a curves are strongly affected by the slits. In an ascending field, the m_y-H_a curves exhibit kink or peak structures, because the slits prevent penetration of magnetic flux. In a descending field, m_y becomes positive, because magnetic flux is trapped in the slits, in contrast to the behavior of a single strip without slits, for which m_y =0.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, revtex

Limited Multidrug Resistance Efflux Pump Overexpression among Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Strains of ST131

Gram-negative bacteria partly rely on efflux pumps to facilitate growth under stressful conditions and to increase resistance to a wide variety of commonly used drugs. In recent years E. coli ST131 has emerged as a major cause of extraintestinal infection frequently exhibiting an MDR phenotype. The contribution of efflux to MDR in emerging E. coli MDR clones however, is not well studied. We characterized strains from an international collection of clinical MDR-E. coli isolates by MIC testing with and without the addition of the AcrAB-TolC efflux inhibitor 1-(1-naphthylmethyl)-piperazine (NMP). MIC data for 6 antimicrobial agents and their reversion by NMP were analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA revealed a group of 17/34 MDR-E. coli exhibiting increased susceptibility to treatment with NMP suggesting an enhanced contribution of efflux pumps to antimicrobial resistance in these strains (termed "enhanced efflux phenotype" [EEP]). Only 1/17 EEP strains versus 12/17 non-EEP MDR strains belonged to the ST131 clonal group. Whole-genome sequencing revealed marked differences in efflux-related genes between EEP and control strains, with the majority of notable amino-acid substitutions occurring in AcrR, MarR and SoxR. qRT-PCR of multiple efflux-related genes showed significant overexpression of the AcrAB-TolC-system in EEP strains, whereas in the remaining strains we found enhanced expression of alternative efflux proteins. We conclude that a proportion of MDR E. coli exhibit an EEP, which is linked to an overexpression of the AcrAB-TolC-efflux-pump and a distinct array of genomic variations. Members of ST131, although highly successful, are less likely to exhibit the EEP

Noiseless nonreciprocity in a parametric active device

Nonreciprocal devices such as circulators and isolators belong to an important class of microwave components employed in applications like the measurement of mesoscopic circuits at cryogenic temperatures. The measurement protocols usually involve an amplification chain which relies on circulators to separate input and output channels and to suppress backaction from different stages on the sample under test. In these devices the usual reciprocal symmetry of circuits is broken by the phenomenon of Faraday rotation based on magnetic materials and fields. However, magnets are averse to on-chip integration, and magnetic fields are deleterious to delicate superconducting devices. Here we present a new proposal combining two stages of parametric modulation emulating the action of a circulator. It is devoid of magnetic components and suitable for on-chip integration. As the design is free of any dissipative elements and based on reversible operation, the device operates noiselessly, giving it an important advantage over other nonreciprocal active devices for quantum information processing applications.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures + 12 pages Supplementary Informatio

Natural hazards in Australia : storms, wind and hail

    Get PDF
Current and potential future storm-related wind and hail hazard in Australia is reviewed. Confidence in the current incidence of wind hazard depends upon the type of storm producing the hazard. Current hail hazard is poorly quantified in most regions of Australia. Future projections of wind hazard indicate decreases in wind hazard in northern Australia, increases along the east coast and decreases in the south, although such projections are considerably uncertain and are more uncertain for small-scale storms than for larger storms. A number of research gaps are identified and recommendations made
